S/D Build
That’s what I run. Got high dps, healing, and perma vigor plus high ability to support group dps through might stacking abilities. Strength can be switched with hoelbrak or privateer runes depending on preference, funds, etc. I have no idea what the normal s/d build is for ele but that’s mine.
That’s what I run in PvE (especially high level fractals). You support by giving perma fury and might stacks while doing massive damage. It’s not an optimal dungeon build since lightning hammer is better but still works well and let’s you train yourself for using fresh air optimally in WvW.
For WvW I run this build:
Same gear with same sigils and runes but has a bit more group support through boons, heals, and condi removal while still focusing on massive damage. Fair warning though, this build requires a lot of skill to play well in WvW.
I think it really comes down to what do you want to be able to do. Mine is more defensive but still packs a punch. Hacks will just melt people like crazy but will be less forgiving so it will come down to how you want to play.
I think for S/d you should be running a fresh air build regardless.
The two main ones are: 0/6/0/4/4 and 0/6/0/2/6
Air: 6/10/12
Water: (3 or 6)/10 depending on use of cantrips
Arcane: pretty much standard d/d setup – 2/8 and 11 if you triated 6 points in it.
Also if you’re are procing critical hits often I’d swap out a sigil of battle for sigil of strength/with strength runes.
For scholar runes Hack’s build is pretty much the way to go.
That said has anyone tried the the Superior rune of infiltration on a glassy s/d build – I quite like the idea of having my damage modifier based off of my opponents health rather than my own, plus the stealth is quite trolly.

Yeah exactly. I used to run a more defensive option but I always found myself wanting a bigger punch to really cut through all the condi bunkers. I’ve been much happier ever since, but the cost is I’ve lost some sustain and walk around in fear of zerker longbow rangers, as sad as that sounds.
I don’t feel like I have too much trouble hitting hard with this. I mean, I can’t open by melting people in 2 seconds but in the first few seconds they will suddenly realize that most of their hp is gone because even though it doesn’t look like it, the build I use hits like a truck and still remains rather tanky and viable against almost any spec. It makes me so happy when someone asks me how I can tank them and still hit them for 7-8k using fire grab.
