Q:

Hey,

So with the new patch and everything, I’m wondering, is d/d still the best when it comes to 1v1 dps? Or would s/d or staff be better?

Also, have staff become more viable in 1v1 situations, or no?

A:

Play D/D or S/D for 1v1. Staff is a terrible 1v1 weapon, and focus is not as good as dagger offhand.

D/D has better sustained damage, mobility and defense. S/D has better burst damage and the range advantage.

1v1 dps, S/x
1v1 build in general, well my S/F dps build died horridly to a d/d build.
My S/F Selfish Aura build could beat them pre patch (lots of skill required) with certain amulets.

I still see staff as good for support so a x v x fight over a 1v1. Mind you my friend plays his staff well and has defeated my S/F selfish aura build and my S/F fresh air build (unless I’m really lucky).

/F is my personal preference. I enjoy using the focus, however in a 1v1 fight where your foe is not ranged (projectile range) a dagger offhand would be better suited.

I have been wondering the same thing. I have mostly been playing staff support. Recently I tried a high condition damage S/D build hoping to be able to solo roam WvW with it. So far not much success. It does really good damage but I am having a hard time escaping any pressure ….although might be my lack of skill with the build.

Was thinking of switching build to go more direct damage rather than conditions.

Still, would also like others opinions if I am beating a dead horse and should just switch to D/D for solo roaming.

That’s what I thought too, with d/d being best for 1v1, but then I read that it got nerfed with the recent patch and that glass cannon staff got buffed, which got me thinking of whether staff was better for 1v1 now. Though it seems that it’s still more geared for support play.

Also @TG, what is s/x?

S/x is Secpter / anything, in this case Focus or Dagger.

In 1v1 PvP situation, defeating an opponent would be difficult with staff. The damage is primarily aoe and short on single target damage and many of the best skills can be avoided. Healing is much better now after the patch since we can now cast Healing Rain on the move and follow with a combo finisher, and I guess staying alive counts as dps lol, but then what dps is there?
