I’d say we have three builds. While they each take similar traits, they’re very fundamentally different.

We have the d/d 0/10/0/30/30 Aura share build which is great for support with decent damage and survivability, the 0/20/0/20/30 s/d burst build, and the 0/0/10/30/30 s/d (or occasionally d/d) back point defense/ bunkery build.

The traits are similar, but the builds play VERY different. And those are just the builds viable at high levels(all of these have been seen in recent tourneys.)

We have loads more options than most other classes just because of the way our class is designed, with versatility in mind.

However, I do agree that our fire trait line is pretty garbage, as well as earth past the original 10 points (though I do think Rock Solid is underrated, but that’s a different story.) But we have a lot more options than most other classes do right now.

Technically removing 10 points and allocating somewhere else its not that much of a different build.Unless changing a sigil makes a different build etc.
A mesm can roll with staff or gs, s/p or s/f with similar trait setu.By that logic i alrady have 4 builds for mesm without counting his actually trait (and concept) builds like shatter ,phantasm,conf etc
Anyway objectively ele has one of the most rigid viable trait setup.You either go 30 arcana and at least 20 in water or you go home.

Boon build

Now some are stronger than others depending on what the purpose is but mesmer definitely has many builds I know I am missing a few the only trait that is considered a must for mesmer is 5 points in illusions thats it. Everything else is up to you. Some I gave generic names to but it gives just a general idea. Many of those are pretty different than each other as far as traits good. You don’t take phantasms do 15% more damage instead of taking the extra damage for mind wrack if you are shattering as an example.

Seconded. There`s no valid reason why RTL shouldn`t be reinstated.
Also same for Heal/mist form. Even ran into a guardian today in spvp, when its auto-blocks stopped my CE/RTl/Updrafts during several matches whilst trying to stop it reading its book/heal thingie /sigh

Necros are terrible in PvP. They might have some decent burst, but they have no survivability. A burst ele can still survive very well. A burst s/d ele still has 20 points in water, heals every time they switch to water, 2 healing weapon abilities, PLUS our normal heal. And it’s great burst if you’re able to land it all. fire 2, 4, 3+ Earth Swap Arcane Wave Earth 4+ Air swap Air 2 is pretty much a 1 shot combo that gives your entire party 12 stacks of might for 20 seconds.

I said s/d burst, s/d bunker, and d/d aura share. Three viable builds that all play very differently. The traits may be similar, but the runes/sigils/ weapons create a completely different playstyle.

Every mesmer ran some variation of 20/20/0/0/30. Every Ranger ran beastmastery. Every Guardian but one ran mid point bunker. They all had the same exact playstyle, just a slightly different way of going around it. We have 3 different pvp playstyles.

Necros are terrible in PvP. They might have some decent burst, but they have no survivability. A burst ele can still survive very well. Well, if your team can prevent the ele from taking 1325.5 damage, then yes, s/d burst eles are pretty good.
I admit, I don’t know nor care much about tPvP (I’m really only concerned with duels and WvW), so if you say they’re worth taking for burst damage over any other class, I’ll take your word for it. Perhaps the roles in tPvP are why you say aurashare plays so differently from a bunker, as well.

This is why it is silly to make balance changes to any aspect of the game other than s/tPvP based on s/tPvP. Every class has 1-3 “viable” builds and often the classes which are mediocre in other game modes are considered OP in tPvP.

Standing in a circle wearing one of a small set of stats fighting others using one of a small set of stats is unlike anything else in the game.

My old elementalist build which was viable in WvW (and able to kill the cookie cutter tPvP style builds easily enough there) got hit with the same nerfbat meant to whack down the almighty bunker ele. Thanks to elementalists’ OP ability to, um, move fast holding some orb (?) I’ve lost a big part of what made me able to efficiently engage and burst, if for any reason I miss a single RtL I’ve likely lost the fight.

Where they really need to hit bunkers is in the damage. Make it so speccing to heal and survive means not even being able to put enough damage out to pressure an opponent off a point if that’s what it takes. Then buff damage builds enough so they can kill a full healing bunker, and you’ll have an interesting game.

Three viable builds for elementalist with nearly the exact same trait distribution. Okay, you go on living in that fantasy land where the playstyles are sooooo different between spamming attunement swap for buffs and dodge roll healing and um, spamming attunement swaps for buffs and dodge roll healing while sometimes doing some damage.

Show me a build with less than 30 total points in water & arcane using anything besides cantrips and arcane utilities that can even stay alive in tPvP against equally skilled opponents. At least most other profession’s 2-3 viable builds have their trait points in different lines.

Hats off to all the ones who stood before me, and taught a fool to ride.

This is the flaw inherent in balancing the entire game around the least played aspect. Yes, balance is immensely important in PvP. Still, all balance decisions based on PvP should be PvP only.

There’s hardly any play in it anyway, and you’re only sharing Frost and Shocking aura…if we’re calling that specific tactic a build, you should call it ‘Frost&Shock aura share’ because the actual offensive auras (half the purpose of sharing auras there) you can’t share with daggers.

D/d aura share is about as close to a build as Staff aura share is. They both have 2 auras to share, so….wooptie doo :P

I don’t think Fire Aura u gain from Signet will be shared though? The same go with Fire Aura through combo Leap through a Fire Field or Magnetic Aura gained from Runes of Earth. They should fix this ASAP.

If that were the build in question, perhaps. But that wasn’t the build mentioned as a d/d aura share build above. Such a build would require a fast recharging signet or two though but, IMO, all the signets are too lackluster to sacrifice just to spam for auras and you’ll still need a cantrip somewhere in there for stunbreak, likely condition removal, and a few other goodies required to survive. Said aura share build would definitely be ‘a build’ but how many people use that one? How many actually venture away from the Arcane trait line completely? Such a build would require 20/10/10/30/0…

And yes, auras from Fire’s Embrace are shared. It’s a niche build but feels like it sacrifices a lot just to share auras…if you went the selfish route, you could improve your signet use so you never lose their effect, and recharging faster, making Signet of Restoration the best heal while keeping your auras contained to yourself….or dip into Arcane so swapping to earth gives 2-auras worth of protection + more fury…

Seriously? too powerful? I’ll agree that the Ele is in a good place compared to others. So, how about this, focus on bringing other classes up instead of wildly swinging nerf bats at classes that still have some viability.

I still think Ele weapon diversity should be improved. I do like my scepter, but I want to be able to use my Staff and Focus more….not that I don’t already use them, but I’d like to still feel confident about my weapon of choice while Obsidian Flesh or Frozen Ground are on cooldown.

I usually end up with a couple extra seconds of Chill from tossing the Earth auto and Shockwave into my chill field.

And Dagger – Air 2.

Glyph of Elemental Power will get better as well, as it gives 6s worth of weakness, which should allow you to maintain it pretty easily.

But the weakness change will buff necros and warriors the most.

I found the Necro and Warrior whining hiliarious.

1) ANet creates a game where avoiding damage is far superior to taking it on the chin.

2) ANet is surprised that their “Bag o Hitpoints” classes can’t stay “In the Pocket” long enough to be effective.

Elementalist has a way easier chance to apply weakness then most other classes, I think you will all be suprised when the changes come in and weakness is lowering enemy damage by 25-33%, it would open up an AIR dps build for ele, because you could throw up perma weakness on your targets.

More likely, it’ll create bunker builds that stack Protection and Weakness to become SUPER BUNKERS!
