I play a staff build, which is usually very fun, but it is often very frustrating because the auto-attack is so agonizingly slow. In WvW or dynamic events my target is often already dead by the time I actually get a shot off. Even if the target is still alive at the time, quite often the attacks get obstructed by scenery or the target has ran out of range; due to the low attack frequency this seriously hurts our dps against moving targets. If ANet are reading this, please please consider decreasing the time between attacks for the sake of our (or at least my) sanity!

you should specify on attunement, since all are different. I find fire attunement on staff to have the most reliable dmg and its auto atk speed/animation seem fine seeing how it can crit for 2k a atk and has short range aoe

If anything on staff needs editing I would say the auto atk on earth and lighting are near useless, and the number 2 skill on lighting has too much of a channel time

It causes weakness and it’s a projectile finisher…what more do you need?

The lightning auto attack is great for high precision builds that grant bonuses on crit

(examples: 1. Food that restores HP on crit, 2. Sigils that apply conditions on crit 3. Traits we have that apply conditions on crit (burning, vulnerability). Just to name a few.

Basically it’s a good attack for getting the most out of crit proc builds when targets are fairly spread apart.

Yes, the main problem with Staffs is that the autoattacks for Earth, Air, and Water are not faster than the auto attack for Fire like they’re supposed to be. This basically means that other 3 elements are unintentionally weaker than Fire. I don’t know if Fire is as fast as its supposed to be, but the other 3 certainly aren’t.

In fact, speed/recovery issues are something affecting auto attacks on various weapons across professions, such as the Thief’s Pistol, and is the main reason why some weapons just intuitively (to smart people) feel weaker than they should.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that it has not been fixed or commented on yet, and frankly it single-handedly makes me question the competence of the people doing QA. It also amazes me how many players don’t seem to notice it or care about, when really its existence and its detrimental impact on the game couldn’t be more obvious.

I’d really love to see a projectile velocity increase across the board for all staff auto attacks in conjunction with the above mentioned tweaks. I know Rangers needed a tweak but a 30% increase in projectile speed has done wonders for them, perhaps the concept should apply across the board since we don’t have a 1200 range pure single target damage weapon.

who uses auto attacks on a staff? Just switch atunements and keep casting spells.
