Staff Elementalist
Dear All
Typically I’ve left GW2 before the expansion. Things may have changed since but when I first saw the new expansion, something about it turned me away from it. So fast forward over a year I’m sort of back. I notice some cool looking features have been added to the game. Though I’m still on the “vanilla” version.
I usually main a staff ele and warrior for pvp, wvw and pve, but this iteration of staff ele seems different, it very inflexible, doesn’t seem natural (my interpretation), it seems more punishing for trying to play it. Flame burst I’m required to manually look in the direction my character is facing for it to cast, where as before it would of turned around (standing still) to cast at the targeted opponent.
Lightning surge’s and shock wave’s casting field of area seems narrower when you are moving in combat.
I understand meteor have been reduced to three targets, I really don’t have problem with that, but the radius of impact seems off or the interval of meteors are more pronounced and less threatening.
The switching of attunement may be me (cause I’m out of practice) or the mouse is playing up. Sometime it seems unresponsive on command.
I get the impression for the reasoning behind of these changes, is to perhaps remove the close combat effectiveness the staff ele could possess if played rightly. Or I’m simply out of the loop and there other reasons to consider.
If anyone knows the date of major changes/updates to the staff ele or take the time to enlighten me, I would appreciate it. I will search of course. If a similar post has been made I apologise and ask for this thread to be closed if you can point me to the thread echoing my concerns.

A lot of things have been nerfed on the ele. I suggest you try a new class like the Revenant if you want to come back to the game.
Line-casting was nerfed, before you could line up your meteors by interrupting the animation at the very end and using burning retreat. Most people did this unknowingly. Now they are always scattered the same. You can see an example of line casting in my GvG farewell video (when I left the game for 6 months) here (25 seconds in): https://vimeo.com/139760047
Also the enemies now see the red circle of meteor shower, so they all dodge out – making the best elementalist skill mostly useless in WvW and PvP except for nuking canons and siege.
Then the elementalist class has been designed as a healing bot with the expansion and the heavy class hit as hard as the light class, so there isn’t much reason to play a light class.

Thanks Xillllix that helped to clarify as to why I finding the class awkward to deal with.
I will most likely stick with my warrior abit more. Thanks again for the reply

Don’t Give up on the staff ele just yet.
It’s true that the ele in general has been nerfed, but this should be temporary. In the meantime you could still have fun:
you should check my staff ele pvp guide

You are right MrJefferson
I have no intention of giving up on staff ele. I love it too kitten much. It has or rather it had the potential to deal with most situations in my opinion or in my handling with the ele. The flexibility has been shaved, I feel it. Just as when vigor had been readdressed because perhaps to some it was a little too good, you immediately notice the impact, but it teaches me use my dodges abit more wisely and focus on surroundings.
As a sort of returning player I just about die to anything that looks at me, white belt ele again haha. Not familiar with revenant’s moves or the new elite spec just yet
However I notice two things that bothers me a little. When switching targets using staff 1 I notice on more than one occasion that the first projectile hits the ground but after that it locks on. I experience this both in wvw and pve.
Second I keep getting hit by these random mini cool downs of 3 secs, when trying to move and cast. I know there are channeling skills but it might be me because I’m out of practice. Though I do not remember encountering these as frequently before HOT came about. Again I experience this both in wvw and pve.
To me and maybe everybody else, timing is crucial no matter the game mode, but I am be hampered greatly by these little things, which seems to serve no clear purpose. Could be bugs.
In my opinion ele does need quality assurance like with all professions. I think it is healthy to see how each profession interact with each other on a 1vs1 basis (an age old argument, to be sure) while still maintaining their group core philosophy. I’m not a game dev, it would be a bit hard for me to fully appreciate the numbers, the time and variable situations they have to discern on a daily basis.
Thank you mate, for encouraging to keep the faith with the staff ele. I was a warrior first, but then I discovered the meaning of love. I’m not feeling the return love anyone. The feels.

It’s still by far the best and most in demand dps class and weapon in every area of the game apart from pvp. Raids especially demand great staff eles.
