Here I’ll be explaining some stuff it can be boring so i put some stuff so you guys can skip, this will be mostly about staff support build, runes, sigils and amulet. Also talks about countering classes.
Here is the game play of this build plus some entertaining stuff
interesting use of staff, I enjoyed the video
imho ‘tho that’s viable in sPvP only: in WvWvW you’d get roflsteamed
thanks for sharing

There are many viable builds for Staff in WvW; we all have the same weapon skills. In WvW he would be with 5 or more so no he wouldnt be ‘roflsteamed’.
I don’t play WvWvW sorry i only play spvp and tpvp ^^
Very interesting, very good play, but I don’t think it was necessary to devote the last few minutes of the second video to showing us someone in sPvP being a sore loser.

Haha thank you and I thought it was quite funny xD that’s why I sort of wanted to show it and I thought it could have been a bit relevant since the last post people were saying that there were problems with thieves xD so I wanted to show them that thieves have problems with eles too
“Travel in pack so there is someone who can kill thieves/mesmers” isn’t really a “class counter”. It just shows how insanely bad staff really is.
Decent gameplay. However hot join is not the place to show the “viability” of staff. In a tournament I’m not sure how well this would fare.

Look it’s a staff ‘SUPPORT’ build, let me emphasize this; ‘SUPPORT’, I wouldn’t call this a support class if it’s meant to roam around solo. That’s why you have to at least travel in a pair.
By countering i mean surviving as this is a supportive role you need to focus on staying alive and at the same time helping your pair. Countering also determines on the way the build has been set up as a supportive role my idea of countering is to survive enemy burst and this is by using CC.
As a support staff user, surviving is the key essence into playing big roles – this will allows me to help team mates by healing and CC those in the fight, staff isn’t ‘bad’ you just need to know how to use it and the effective way of using it. It’s the same as every other weapons.

Hey Raif I wouldn’t mind doing a game play in tournament, my advice in terms of staff tournament play is being wary of what is going, this build specifically is to maintain a focus on constant healing and focusing upon your own survivability to maintain to extra heals for your teams.
I wouldn’t say that spvp is not the place to show the ‘viability’ of staff, as tournament builds were also created through testing it in spvp. I think it’s the way players handle their own build which suits their play style.

There is hot join and there is tournament play. Both are sPvP. What works in one doesn’t necessarily work in the other.
A staff support build doesn’t really work in tournament play where there is much higher level of focus from teams due to higher coordination. A staff ele would be the first to go in every engagement. Nor because you are a threat, but because killing you would be easy in the tournament meta. You do not have the damage pressure that a S/D or the defenses of a D/D and the ground targeted AOE nature of the staff makes its damage output meh at best in the high movement that is in tournament play rendering the damage you “could” deal with unreliable. The support you give is nice yes, but in a 5v5 every person needs to be bringing some form of damage or control along with group support that is reliable. It is why the S/D or D/D builds are so good. They bring solid damage that can be reliably landed as well as heals that can cleanse in AOE.
Don’t mind me though, if you can make it work in the tournament scene, more power to you.
To Raif.9507
I understand what you mean but some people have had the mind set of treating staff similarly to S/D and D/D and that’s what I believe to be a downfall or why there are a number of complains about the weapon or why it can’t be viable for tournaments.
Some people have been really used to the play style of D/D and S/D therefore they find staff a bit foreign to them when using it. In my honest opinion staff play style is a bit more tricky however by pulling off a certain play style it will become a threatening weapon.
I don’t think elementalist are always the first to go, no offense but most elementalist or other classes that I see in tournament meta that goes down first are mostly glass cannons or ones that charge in but are unable to disengage properly.
I’m just saying but like whatever suits you best will suit you best
“Travel in pack so there is someone who can kill thieves/mesmers” isn’t really a “class counter”. It just shows how insanely, brokenly, overpowered thief really is.
fixed for ya ^^

That’s funny and true, sometimes thieves don’t attack until you’re in the middle of the fight, sneaky class but then they’d complain when we pick on them haha. However respect to those who play condition build than glass cannons although their ability to hide and evade a lot is still annoying.
I meant staff elementalists in a tournament scene would be the first to go. Not elementalists in general.
As I said, whatever floats your boat and if you can make it work, awesome. Though I will say there is a reason no one runs staff in a high level tournament scene.

Lost ability to quote :/
Nice staff build.
My friend has run staff in pvp since the game was released (he mainly pves since out team fell apart).

With clerics for maximum condition removal. We used to run that build with my D/D build (same traits, switch blasting staff for vigor) and divinities on our team. The staff ele would go mid with a bunker guard and I would go far with a thief not far behind.
Staff ele should not be looked at as a S/D (damage) or a D/D (bunker). It is a support / bunkerish build. And this build and yours are both built to run with another character. You can survive for a while by yourself but you are better supporting an ally.

I completely agree with you, the whole idea for me as a support is to be able to live long enough (bunk) and also contribute to heals and minor boons(support), D/D and S/D in my opinion are good however they more likely contribute by giving big or decent damage and being able to roam and bunk giving these weapon sets a lot of roles during play however this in comparison to staff support (imo) has a least contribution to supporting teams in a whole; yes D/D and S/D can give heals however the amount of heals they can contribute are limited plus most of their CC are limited in terms of AOE radius.
the build you have sent me is fairly difficult for me to comment on, I don’t like using glyph utilities unless I’m traiting myself 10 in air magic due to the reduction of cool down on the glyphs for heals and such.
By cleric do you mean, clerics amulet? or cleric stats in general (WvWvW?), for clerics amulet it doesn’t contribute to condition removal, it only contributes to healing power.
And yeah this built i can survive very long in a 1v1 and 2v1. However it’s meant only for survivability and support reason why it’s fairly difficult for this build to win in a 1v1 situation.
So the reason why i run dolyak in my armor runes is for survivability and regeneration (regeneration = condition remove). Cleric yes, yes ..heals + defense i’m not going to focus a lot on damage i’m more likely focusing on heals.
Staff i use sigil of energy is an extra to be able to dodge roll for churning earth = combo finisher and water condition removal.
Regeneratin o. Dolyak runes will also procs Cleansing Water?? Interesting. While at it, I want to ask how much does the Regen from Dolyak gives if u are wearing Cleric Amulet? Is the Regen permanent or when does it procs? Thanks.

If you read it, when granting regeneration to yourself and allies it will remove a condition (re-worded it) In my belief when the regeneration is granted to you by the dolyak rune it will remove a condition so that’s the reason why i use it although i haven’t really tested how much regen heal it will give you or whether it does proc i’m only using it from instinct but i will test it now and will tell you in a bit.

I’ve tested it dolyak will only give you 30 heals per second and it does not proc cleansing water so my bad i will take what i mentioned earlier back 6th dolyak rune will NOT help on condition removal. I advice to either change the 6th to a different defensive or healing rune.
I kinda have to rewrite my use of dolyak (sorry a bit sleepy) hehe, i use dolyak for toughness and vitality as I want that survivability against those glass cannons and condition builds.
Although the build i’m using is good at removing conditions i’d still be vulnerable due to low hp; as conditions aren’t affected by how much armor you’ve got it’s how much vitality you have(well that’s what i think or my condition necromancer friend has told me) therefore the limit i’ve set myself to making my ele builds is that the hp must be above 14K at least.
I may have made some questionable sentences but feel free to ask me whether what i’ve said as may not be what I have intended to say (i’m a bit tired so i’m only replying to what i’m currently thinking).

Let me clarify. There may be WvW staff builds viable for running with a group/zerg. There are no staff builds that are viable for situation where you get caught alone. We used to be able to get away, so even though it was always very risky to attempt a 1v1, we could at least avoid being a free kill. That’s no longer the case.
It’s looking like the best we can do is have a S/D or D/D build with a trait point distribution that makes it viable to switch to Staff when the situation allows.

Thanks for done the testing. I have a question for you that what difference does it make bw 13800 Hp with 14000HP when dealing with Conditions.13800 is what my Eles has when using Cleric Amulet and Earth runes.
@Stealth
It doesn’t make a big difference however it does make a tiny difference. i’ve limit myself to at least having more than 14k as a personal preference doesn’t mean you have to i mean if you say you’re fine with 13.8K then yeah go for it. For me I just don’t like the fact that the health pool is low therefore I bumped it up along with my toughness.
I see. For me though, since this meta is all about Necro, so I change my build to be a roamer instead, using Soldier Amulet instead of Cleric. But for over 14k Hp, if you tried divinity runes, it will give you 14k-ish hp
necro has been from the ground now to the top, as a necro player myself (i play most of the classes) I believe the new patches made it very OP therefore it seems easy now for everyone to play that class. Yes if you are using D/D or S/D i’d advice to use soldiers amulet and use ether renewal
