Switching attunements should not auto-attack the closest mob

So many times have I caught myself trying to zip from one place to another, would switch to air attunement for the speed buff and it would start auto-attacking the closest mob.

Please fix that.

(and while we’re at it, it also appears as though exiting combat also takes too long, fix that, too. kthx).

i don’t want to turn off auto attack, i want to auto attack when i actually intend on attacking a mob.

switching attunements is not (in my opinion) and indication of intent to attack a mob.

hmm dont take the arcane trait evasive arcana, also dont take any of the traits that damage on attunement switch.

hmm dont take the arcane trait evasive arcana, also dont take any of the traits that damage on attunement switch.

These are not solutions, these are workarounds.

This does need to be corrected. It’s especially noticeable with staff when you shoot something 50 feet away after changing attunement.

1. There are no optional traits that damage on attunement swap, only the mandatory level 15 trait unlock, so “opting out” of this behavior is not an option.

2. The text for those level 15 trait unlocks explicitly say to either deal aoe dmg or cause dmg on the selected target; this doesn’t appear to be the way it behaves currently – it will auto target the closest mob if none is selected, then cause damage and continue to auto-attack.

If this trait could have different properties depending on your equipped weapon it might make more sense. It just sucks for staff when you’re swapping just for swiftness.

I agree with the OP on this. Its one thing if I am targeting something, but when I am just running around and smack a random deer by accident, it is quite annoying.

eh I always switch to air for the speed bonus and ends up lighting strike a random mob from the air passive 15 point talent, then it puts me in combat and slows me down -_-. anyway to put that talent active on target? instead of just striking the closest mob?

Not sure why, but it seems to happen more frequently while wielding a scepter.

With the channel skill yes, even when you don’t have traits invested in air.

The problem occurs anywhere all the time and is straight forward to reproduce in the mists:

- happens for me every time when switching to air, from any other element
- without any trait points spent
- with any weapon equipped
- when in weapon range of any attack-able mob, e.g. reproduce at a “training dummy” in the mists

Right now when testing with dagger/dagger, it even fired the auto-attack of the source element, then immediately after the air auto-attack.

/bugged it a while a go

EDIT: Auto-targeting has to be on for it I believe.

Yep same here, I run s/d and switch into air to run faster when moving from place to place, and about half the time I strike a random deer. It’s quite frustrating.

A few points to add:

-Pressing F3 (air attunement button) while you’re already in the air attunement also triggers the auto-attack.
-A newly made elementalist doesn’t trigger any auto-attack when the air attunement haven’t been unlocked yet.

You could say that switching to air attunement triggers the auto-attack even before making the switch… making the first auto-attack from the previous attunement rather than the air attack.

Yes. I often notice it casting a fire spell at a nearby mob if I have switched to air from fire. Another point is that this behavior also consumes any crit on next ability proc/trait etc. This behavior on attunement swapping is far more detrimental than beneficial.

I agree. I have turned off autoattack for now, but it was quite convenient to have it on most of the time, except when I am switching attunement out of combat.

Yeah seriously its so annoying to switch to air for a speed boost only to have my character hit the nearest enemy and slow down for combat.

And dont give us that “turn off auto target” crap. Its called auto TARGET not “auto shoot whatever is in front of you upon switching attunment.”

You should deactivate auto-targeting, it’ll solve all your problems. If you still want the mob you attack with 1 to become your target automatically, you can set the “promote target” thingy.

At least that did it for me, never suffered from anything like you describe.

EDIT: Auto-targeting has to be on for it I believe.

This will also happen if you’ve manually selected a target (lets say you accidentally click on something while running by) with auto-targeting off.

hmm dont take the arcane trait evasive arcana, also dont take any of the traits that damage on attunement switch.

This bug doesn’t have anything to do with any particular trait. It will happen with 0 trait points spent.

I have a thread in the Bugs forum about this with some extensive testing. Feel free to check it out if you want to know more about the issue.

If you can post in that thread about anything I missed (or even anything I got wrong), you can help pinpoint the bug for the ArenaNet team while also raising awareness for the issue.

This may be a workaround, but not a solution to the problem.

Another use case:

Last night, I was running a dungeon w/ a couple of guildies, and went forward to tag the mob to focus target (the mobs were around a bend, so I had to get relatively close for them to be visible). I switched to water attunement to drop an aoe slow on them and I started auto attacking.

Granted, I “could” just think and plan defensively so that I don’t switch attunements within range of a mob, but at that point I feel like I’m combatting the UI rather than the gameplay mechanics. Turning off auto-target may be something I very well do, but that’s still not the solution to the problem – switching attunements shouldn’t be an intent to engage combat; switching attunements while in combat should keep the player in combat.
