Tanky D/D elementalist builds
Try using a mix between clerics (power, toughness, healing power)
and exotic jewelery (vitality, condition damage, power)
I’ve found it to be a pretty optimum combination of offense and defense for D/D users

If you want real tanky gear, go for pow/vit/tough.
@daphoenix, imo healing power is gota be the worst stat for D/D eles imo, aside from the minor trait that gives you regeneration when you switch to water attunement and the 5 skill in water, there is NO use for healing power, besides i’ve already tried that mix with knights/valk gear with emerald/beryl accessories mixed for a lot of toughness and some vit as i’ve mentioned but it doesnt really work out, also i havnt really mentioned much about dmg, and i refuse to rely on condition damage, not my playstyle just like healing :P.
@Lucterin, if you’ve read my post you’d see i have full set of karma/invader gear that gives Power/Vit/Toughness, but that alone is not enough hp, but ofcourse i can increase my hp FURTHER with the invader’s accessories (cost like 1.2k or so badges a LOT) but that hampers my ability to crit, with the emerald accessories i get 27% crit chance alone with them.
Thus i hope ANet could add in gear that gives Vitality focused stats along with a mix of power/precision (simmilar to the emerald accessories or knight’s gear but instead of lots of toughness, you get lots of vitality) as i’ve mentioned and with many other spreadsheet charts on effective hp/toughness mix. Ele’s hp pool is not ideal for toughness stacking, but infact we need MORE vitality and a decent number of toughness, not the other way around.
Right now there is not enough stat variation in gear to make more builds POSSIBLE, Condition damage is not my play style, thus i have to resort to crit dmg (valkyrie or beryl gear) but then that hampers my ability to sustain in the front lines coz valk only gives Power Vitality and Crit dmg(but crit dmg is non-factor towards my build i just want crit chance), and i could get myself a full set of Invader accessory but then i’d have close to ZERO crit chance, and that would remove 90% of good sigils for weapons for my ideal build.
D/D elementalists are totally viable in WvW. Due to the large number of casual or new players in WvW, it’s not difficult to simply outplay your opponents.
Personally, I’ve never lost a 1v1 fight in WvW, and I’ve fought in at least 20. In fact, never bothered grabbing a decent set of exotic armor either. I’m still wearing a green, a lvl 70 exotic, and my armor is a hodgepodge of random types including carrion and berserker’s armor.
I would love to get prec/vit/toughness for spvp!
I am using mainly prec/power/toughness for pve and it works pretty good for wvw, even though I only have 14k hp unbuffed.

Im not talking about 1v1’s, im talking about large fights frontlining (obviously not TANKING the zerg but put pressure and take some punishment and retreat)
and WvW only, not Spvp or PvE

I am using a tanky s/d build and it is working fine. I usually go in at melee range so should work perfectly fine with d/d too.

the knights gear? i was running that but decided to switch, roughly 11-13k hp pool is horrible for me lol. iono maybe i just want to stack HP
not to mention, a rare encounter with a geared thief,(this was when i decided to get more hp) he did a d/d 5 skill for 3 or 3.5k dmg followed by a 7.5k crit behind me ofcourse. Not sure if it was because there was others on me and might’ve stacked Vulnerbillity but after that i just realised 11-13k hp, just doesnt cut it.
this was during my knights gear period with a few valk (shoulders shoes gloves, hat and a beryl ring) for hp had around close to 1.8k toughness

When you got a 12k damage from a warrior kill shot with full lv 80 exotic with Pow/Vit/Tough gear on, you know that 11k – 13k hp is like a joke.
I am still waiting for that 12k crit on me.

yeh thats my point, besides guardians (or maybe their heals are just OP instead of their tankiness from toughness) Toughness is underpowered imo, but like i said its the time i got hit by a 7.5k Backstab this could’ve been caused by vulnablity but nonetheless, HP seems like the best way to tank in gw2 but theres not enough options for my play style

Healing power isn’t worthless on elementalist b/c eles have so many methods to heal. It is worthless to mostly every other class except guardian. Statwise healing power gives low returns per point. Toughness is arguably something you wanna add up for defense.
As for frontlining, I frontline most battles of up to 20 enemies on the opposing team most of the time. I usually initiate the battle when people are standing around, because nobody expects a churning earth + teleport elementalist most of the time. That, and the added confusion gives you about 5 seconds to unleash all your AoE chaos before backing out of the zerg. Using all of the earth skills, and fire, you can easily deal take out about a 1/3rd hp off of the enemies (usually around 5-10 people get affected) HP bar with DoT conditions right off the bat.
In addition, an elementalist D/D is one of the few classes that are effective at frontlining an enemy assault. Lots of escape methods, heavy AoE damage, and backup defensive mechanisms allow you to effectively lead an assault and deal ALOT of damage. Other classes may have more defense (such as guardian), but they lack mobility/ quick AoE DPS and cannot frontline as effectively.
