Test Staff Ele
Either go full dps or full support. There is a guide out there too that goes in depth how to play staff in pvp. I cant seem to find it though

full dps while using a support/aoe weapon is a contradiction in small arena based combat. put it this way, 1200 range spells in a game where you need to stand in a small circle with heavy melee fights for sustained periods will never work against equally or better skilled players.

thats why you melt the players in the circle and let your tanky friends cap it.
my ele has been full glass staff zerker since beta and i play them every night that i pvp
with meteor shower pummeling for 5k, lava font ticking away for 4k and fireball spam also landing 3-4k everything simply dies.
it gets even funnier if they try to rez.
i’m not saying its the best build ever, but it is certainly effective, you just need to be sneaky and attack from a vantage point (read: gank from afar while they’re fighting you allies :P),
if the enemy even looks in your direction you either need to pop earth and reflect or RUN or you’re dead in 2 seconds! :P
staff ele is how a glass cannon should be, its my belief that they have the highest damage possible in spvp, but they’re also one of the squishiest targets in the game :P
when it pays off it REALLY pays off,
however when it fails it really fails and you’ll feel like deadweight.
i have tons of clips of melting teams as zerker staff ele, i’ve been meaning to put them all in a compilation

so high risk/reward only way to go with staff ele? was really hoping to get some more feed back on the subject, but I guess this will have to do – thx

Unfortunately as you say you are in trouble if you are under attack, the counter is to make distance, but you need to be in that circle to be contributing. Then there’s your cooldowns where you are totally ineffective, then the long cast times, then the slow avoidable autos, then the inability to burst a player. Melting a player just means you are playing a bad player – and that same bad player would melt twice as fast with either sceptre or dagger (both of which have higher damage than staff for pvp, aoe is simply useless background noise in arena fights)

O_o
it only takes one ally to capture/contest a point, you don’t need to be in the circle if your ally is.
and you can cover the whole circle in heavy damage, the enemy has 2 choices,
underestimate your damage and stay on point (and die a second or two later.)
or leave the point and your ally will cap it.
i’m not sure how you can call the monstrously huge AoE damage of a zerker staff ele “background noise” in a point capture game! :P
i have soooo many clips that i need to merge into a compilation of how absolutely devastating it can be one moment there are 4 enemies on point vs 1-2 allies, after a few seconds of massive numbers popping up on your screen…no enemies left alive.
so what your describing is a 2v1 where an ally is in the circle fighting for the point and you are just left to freely stand there spamming you aoe with impunity. That’s not fighting against equally skilled players, thats 2v1. What happens when its 2v2 and the second players gets in your face?, what happens when your meters are on cooldown?, what happens when you have to fight someone 1v1 at melee range? (common in spvp) I love staff, but i also know pvp is not about lots of pretty numbers on the screen, that’s pveing.

This seems pretty normal to me, people have always been reluctant to go full support and they try to dps while auramancing and healing, i see a lot of menders.
Personally i like to go full support tank or ignore every group synergy and go D/D with personal survivality.
for WvW i love a zerker staff ele 4.5k auto attacks 5-6k meteors 4-5k lava font and all the utility in lighting you could ask for then ofc earth and water have their values but zerkers really abuse electric and lighting.
there are plenty of other builds tho all of ele weapons are viable you could roll bunker and go DD for either condi or strength. S/D? sure works just fine.
but if your going to WvW in a large group nothing makes a cataclysmic impact like a staff zerker ele with an obsession with fire.

You may have just convinced me to spend my 80 level book thing on my ele for those times I just feel like zerging around

tread with caution if your team is bad or has a weak front line no matter how good you are the enemy will shred you instantly. but if your team has the iron clad front wall your meteors will melt the enemy team for over 6k per hit and 4.5k on auto attacks. and if you want to end lives overcharge either fire or lighting. and if you want to cover your tracks when your team retreats overcharge water or earth.
