You have no way to prove swapping attunements will yield higher DPS. In the same light, I have no way of ever proving that staying in Fire full time to DPS will out perform swapping attunements.
Well, since the damage formula, skill damage numbers, skill and attunement swap cooldowns, etc. are known, you could calculate DPS for various sequences of actions…
Yeah, he could, but he won’t. And I don’t have time. What can you do.

I’d be highly surprised if anyone can without the game giving us full access to all damage types in the combat log can bypass painfully slow observational based data gathering (record a video, watch in slow motion, record numbers manually for things like conditions). You’d then need to calculate the difference in damage based on what stats you have. This is only further complicated by the fact diminishing returns do exist in game and aren’t fully documented which means you’d have to determine those as well (for example is the power granted by might subject to diminishing returns?). This would require quite the setup all around as you’d also need a variety of different sets of gear to measure all that with.
While I suppose it technically isn’t impossible to do, I would say that it’s such a staggering task I doubt we’ll see it.
So what’s your purpose in this thread? You might as well have said that this entire thread is nonsense to you and moved on already.
People have, repeatedly, called out other people for doing things like playing just Fire and claim superiority over such individuals. All of these claims are never made with facts supporting them. No one has, to date, proven with facts that playing one way is any superior to another. My purpose is to teach Elementalist players that they shouldn’t blindly assume one way is better than another because they were told it was. Threads like these ones just perpetuate the same baseless assumptions that have gone on for the last 6 months.
All you have is your opinion. There’s nothing wrong with your opinion and you’re fully entitled to it. In fact, no one can argue with your opinion. However don’t treat your opinions as fact! The minute you cross that line you’re subject to having to prove what you say is true.
Which consequently you still haven’t done

What is this?
I played an elementalist to 30 and I think they are possibly the worst class ever made. They are horribad. They do crap damage and die so fast it’s pathetic in any spec other than earth. It’s just not worth the time to play them. Maybe when I get a programable mouse to teach to play the musical of key presses needed to make them not suck, I’ll play her again.

Then you haven’t played far enough. The elementalist doesn’t start to shine until near max level. If you can make optimal use of boons, and evasive arcana, you can notice how powerful they can be. Sure, it’s mostly just that 1 build. However, claiming that you’ve seen it all just because you managed to level an elementalist to level 30 is a bit daft.
If anything, don’t expect the elementalist to be a typical MMO mage. They’re not, and shouldn’t be played like one.
The only wrong way to play an elemental.. is to play one at all in current state.

you wont have an accurate opinion on any class till 80; i hated mesmer till 80; now it (ele and ranger) are my favourites
-also gw2 has a 1 button press= 1 action policy; afaik macros go against that

True but a lot of people use macros though. In WvW, I have seen too many people dodge jumping with perfect timing that makes you wonder if they are using a macro or are just great with the skill.
Ill start: i have a friend who i play with, we both have ele alts, i like scepter focus and he likes staff. What makes me cringe though is the fact that he uses fire 99,99% of the time…. Just spamming fire 1 and sometimes fire 2 and 3. He only switches to air only while travelling for the speed buff.
depending on the group and the eles build, this may be the most effective way to play staff-ele
No, no and no. ONE Earth #1 and you just applied 3s of weakness. This means every non-critical hit is a glancing blow which only does 50% damage. Now do you think an overall 50% damage reduction is something to be neglected in favor of a little more DPS?
What about chill? What about AoE healing and condition removal? What about stacking vulnerability on bosses?
Staying in one attunement 99% of the time is pretty much the only wrong way to play an ele, regardless of your build and trait lines. Players who do that ignore our main class mechanic and do not take advantage of it in any way. End of discussion.
He’s just being lazy. I do this sometimes, except I use air.
Also not having AoE instant cast and 100% clicking isn’t wrong but it cripples us.

No it’s the equipment. I couldn’t possibly play my ele without a gamer mouse, and hat only has 12 extra buttons. My hands are small so using the default in games have always been impossible.
I consider playing d/d the wrong way to play an ele.
Of course, that’s just because I hate the way it feels, and it just doesn’t really fit with how I feel a mage-type character should play, it’s obviously effective.

dodge jumping is ridiculously easy if you dodge with v (which is much more responsive than double tapping); i dont see your point (if thats all you’re basing it on)
