LocknDog- level 80 thief
Ok so as someone who has logged 1k hours on thief i’m very attached to the class. However with the recent update i feel like its been spat out of the mouth of terribad classes and put in a pretty kittening bad situation.
That beings said:
Is ele worth it? It seems extremly fun with all of its burst and acsees to both CC, dps, heals, and survivability. I play mostly wvw and spvp, but i know ele can be deadly in dungeons so its covered easily across all gamemodes.
IF it is worth it, what are some troubles i might have with converting? And why it would be worth my time to play it even with the troubles i might have.
IF it isnt worth it, state why and what you would do in my situation, because I want to have fun again :L
Much Love,
~Yodog and the thief community(we are all homeless Q.Q)
well first of all, i wouldn’t say thief got kitten on, s/d yes but d/p is still fine, granted 1v1s may be slighttttttttlyy tougher but still, its pretty much the same d/p theif with added cleave.
and yes, of course, elses kittening awesome and probably the most viable class spread across the entire game in with the current patch in mind.
it may take a bit to get used to playing it as there is a much higher skill cap, meaning usable skills, therefore memorizing keybinds and such. but ya. ele ftw, no reason not to right?
I think you should definitely give the elementalist a go. It seems like you have the motivation, and in my honest opinion elementalists are a great profession. I have had an 80 ele for about a year now and still play him more than my other two lvl 80 chars (mesmer and engineer).
You hit the nail on the head there when you said it has burst, CC, dps and heals. But fair warning; we don’t have as much survivability as other classes and most of the time our heals, water attunement and defensive buffs are all that keep us alive. Although since you’re coming over from another moderately squishy profession I’d say you’ll get used to it pretty quickly.
The elementalist is pretty great in wvw and pve, although it takes a lot of effort to get very far with it in pvp and that will probably be the most difficult transition for you. There is also a lot of button pushing and you have to learn each attunement and how to manage the cooldowns of a lot of abilities.
So in summary, in my opinion the elementalist is amazing and fun to play, you just have to put in a lot of time and effort to be as effective as some of the other classes. If you don’t end up enjoying it, I would recommend the mesmer, you’d probably have a bit less trouble switching over to that class?
Yeah it’s worth it. Ele is very hard to play but it’s also very rewarding when you get better.
The skills are fun to use, I tried all the class and it’s the class I have the most fun with along with the guardian and the engi.
I have over 800 thief pvp games and mained thief, recently created an ele.
I still find thief alot more fun, ele is a very different play style. IMO you shouldnt go 1 or the other, play both
D/p and P/d are still very viable as they have fixed the steal bug. S/d… cant say much about that
PvP maybe.
WWW roaming don t even think about that…thieves, warriors, mesmers are still uncomparably better than any other profession.
WWW zerging: too early to say… if you like support, go for it, if you like being something more than a waterbot, wait someone to test new traits properly… i suspect blinding ashes still doens t Worth it, but lightning rod could.
Pve:
Dungeons: Don t know, still high skill floor but without fgs the reward is behind a GS warrior since you need time to set up your damage, and evading will lower it a lot.
While taking all aggro and being unable to survive even basic Attacks is not good.
Fractals: possibly still the best dps profession for them.

Was maining the thief too, but now play ele as main for 1,5 year in all game modes (especially wvw). It is most fun to play for me (have 5 chars on 80), cause i do everything at once and it needs quite high skillcap. @LordByron i can agree with thief better at roaming, but warrior? nope. It is just harder with ele to make simmilar dmg (u have to cmake combo). For the mesmer I would say it is nice 1vs1, but in unbalanced fights it dies. To sum up I would say – best roamer – thief. Best taking camp/unbalanced fights roaming – ele and engi.
Afternoon.
I was in the same boat as you. Played Thief exclusively since release and do mostly PVP. I made the change over a month ago now. Best decision I’ve made. Thief to Ele felt like a very natural progression for me.
The class feels great and fluid, and being able to do so much in one class makes it all the more satisfying. I was getting really tired of the spammy nature of Thief and how shoehorned I felt with the class. Ele was like a breath of fresh air, pun not intended. There is also a certain “Noblesse” feeling: most players agree that Ele is one of the hardest classes to get a hang of and it has a high skill ceiling, so being a decent or good Ele nets you respect. Being able to actually heal other players is probably my favourite part about the class right now (I play Cleric Staff in PVP).
I kind of wish I made the move earlier but whatever. I did it and I’m glad I did.
Cheers.
Thief is about an entry level as you can get in PvP. Playing an Ele in PvP is like trying to play piano. You never stop pressing something, but you better be kitten sure you’re pressing the right thing at the right time.

I guess by now we knew you can t kill a warrior or a mesmer or a thief.
So unless you play by self imposed rules (see duels and stuff) of chivalry, the fact of being immortal means being better, no matter what.
Ele is good until you discover your opponent can flee and reengage at will….leaving you with long CDs.
Disclaimer: don t play fresh air, can t say if that is strong…
I’ve mained Thief for a long time, but I’m gradually switching over to Ele. Thief is great within its specialized role, but Ele is versatile and performs well in several different roles.
I also think Ele is more stimulating to play, although I have fun on both classes.
