As the title said, we need a change how tornado/whirlpool work as an elite skill. (maybe this has been talk over and over, but lets talk about it once again)

Strength of Tornado: push opponent (NPC/player), damage them (can be small or large depens on your activated skill). Strength of whirpool: pull opponent, damage them (flat). Other strength: give you stability, HP increase, power/precision increase (small).

Weakness: AOE 5 man cap (yup you cannot push or pull more than 5 opponent in the same time : I note this in WvW), pull and push based on tick (it means it will not always push or pull, try this on NPC and you will see it), has small range (240 radius >> same as your animation), enemy can hit you by range (and hit you by melee between tick), long cooldown.

What need to change/added:
1. reflect all projectile or destroy all projectile (while in tornado/whirlpool form).
2. increase the range.
3. elementalist get speed buff (while in tornado/whirlpool form).
4. reduce the cooldown.
5. decrease cd for subsequent push or pull.
6. or make it so no AOE cap for this skill.

Give me your tought about this.

It’s definitely bad. There are just too many ways to counter it.

Even though it increases power and precision the attack rate is slower than auto attacking with a staff. The blowout proc only triggers about once every 3 seconds which means even a melee without stability can beat you to death if they can time their dodges. The 1/2/3 skills fire even less often, probably 5 seconds or so. Overall the attack speed is so low that any defensive skills will have a huge impact against it, but the damage dealt is still fairly weak except the occasional chain lightning.

But with such a low attack rate the skill somehow still procs confusion about 3 times per second, making it just one more ridiculous counter. It doesn’t make sense when the skill so clearly has an incredibly slow attack rate.

On a fundamental level Tornado suffers from the same problems as conjures, only worse. The class is so fragile we are very dependent on our active skills for survival, replacing our skills, and even our heal leaves us weak every single time.

I would suggest the following changes:
The launch becomes an activated skill, so we can fire it when it will hit, rather than waiting three seconds just to have enemies out of range, and wait another three seconds. The 1/2/3 skills should also be activated. This gives the player more control over the outcome of Tornado.

Heal and utility skills can be used while in Tornado form. So you have some stuff to do between cooldowns. This could even allow us to CC our targets with signets or cleanse movement impairments.

Attunements could also be usable and swappable to allow the triggering of all related traits. The current 1/2/3 effects could be tied to attunements with an extra effect added.

Confusion only triggers when you actually use a skill, because that’s how it’s supposed to work.

Additionally Tornado could also add vigor, or recharge endurance. Since you can actually dodge while in Tornado form, if it gave you extra endurance that could help give it more survivability.

I think these would be good changes because they all engage the player to actually use the skill well, rather than just popping it and chasing targets mindlessly. In return they give the player a vastly increased number of ways to interact with the Tornado and their opponent.

It’s not the best, but it does have it’s charm in combo finishing. Here comes the friendly healing tornado to save the day!

I suggested elsewhere that you need to get skills depending on your attunement.

Whirlpool is stronger than Tornado, because the pull in helps you at keeping your foes close to you. They must dodge to avoid it, but even then, you can dodge too to get to them faster. Tornado push actually makes it much harder to hit with the elite a second or third time, and at the middle of a zerg, you contribute to spreading them out, making tornado weaker.

Of course, some kind of protection would be great.

I agree, this elite really isn’t up to par. I play an engineer, we have the tornado/whirlpool form as a random chance (its the better random chance) I agree, the ability really should reflect projectiles, or at least protect against some sort of damage instead of just giving a health buff. I agree with the OP on the points in one way or another.

Tornado form also needs to make you immune to Immobilize and give some serious healing and/or damage mitigation, since using it currently is suicidal.

Also, it keeps turning me invisible, which would be nice in PvP, I suppose, but I’d really rather see myself turn into a kitten lightning tornado. The skill is so bad that the cool visuals are really the only saving grace.

I main Ele and Necro, though I have an alt of each profession at level 80.

Tornado needs a major rework, too easy to dodge and little damage. Making it draw in like whirpool would fix it imo.

Reducing the aoe cap probably isn’t the best way to go because of WvW/pve farming that would result from it, and it doesn’t make much difference in spvp.

As for whirlpool, a small defensive buff for the 33% nerf would have been nice.

From what I’ve seen, just because you can’t see yourself, doesn’t mean you are invisible for others. Thus it’s most an inconvenience….

Anyway, I like whirlpool. Tornado on the other hand….ewwwww….. If it worked like WP(pull instead of push), I would consider it. But why the hell would I want to push smb away, then chase him so I can push him away again?

My main problem with Transformation Elites like Tornado (and Lich Form for necros) is that you’re supposed to become a threat because of your transformation. Enemies should change tactic, or panic a bit, or scared, of some sort. But when I become a Tornado, what actually happens is: “Focus fire tornado! They can’t kittening heal! It’s a free kill!”

Like seriously? That doesn’t sound so elite to me.

In my opinion, just making it destroy/reflect all projectiles would work. Or at least would be logical since you’re a kittening tornado aren’t you? Where on earth do you see a tornado being shot down by an army of soldiers or something like that? It’s crazy!

If it becomes too OP with the suggested change, reduce the duration in half, or increase the CD.

It’s just unbearable to almost always go down once I pop tornado with more than 2 enemies around. It’s like instant suicide that’s why I never use it PVP or PVE. -_-

My use for tornado, summon tornado, press 3, press 2, when they are blown back press 3 again, press tornado button and continue fighting out of tornado with 20 seconds of stability.

Also tornado will make you lose the point you are trying to defend as you no longer count toward holding that point while transformed

Without question or any doubt whatsoever, Tornado is the worst Elite this game has, of any class, it is absolutely terribad. Whirlpool on the other hand is quite good.

Turn Tornado into a targeted ground effect that lasts for 10 seconds, does a lot of damage, destroys projectiles, blows people away, and grants swiftness+fury per pulse.

I have to admit that tornado can be useful but this only applies in very specific scenarios. I’ve found the Firesword and Golem Glyph to be much, much better overall in any case.

The tornado can probably save someone from imminent death, but at the same time (in PvE) it will do the opposite of what your team usually wants and push mobs away in random directions. You want them balled up, not 5 meters away from each other.

I’ve also found targeting while in tornado mode to be near impossible… I can hardly ever tell when my attacks will hit for sure. The boulder push-back seems to have a slower projectile than the usual boulder you find in dungeons and around the world, and I’ve hardly ever (if ever) seen my blind ability work. The spell definitely needs some original improvements, it’s hardly any good as it is.
