I recently fought probably the best Engineer I’ve fought so far in WvW and decided to make a video of some of the duels we had. I included tips / skill breakdowns in the video itself for anyone interested:

Some very intense duels which swung both ways and were always quite close. Definitely the most fun I’ve had in WvW duels so far.

This is also a case for people using more offensive gear. A turtle-based setup with Healing Power & Signet would never break this guy, although Cleansing Flame could potentially be a pretty powerful utility to use. I tend to be too locked down on my utility choice when a switch here could have been very beneficial.

Another thing I should have touched on is using Churning Earth to kill his Elite. I have a tendency to ignore his Elite turrets far too much when they are actually fairly squishy and simple to take down. The Block that he uses each time I cast Churning just works in my favor since he won’t be attacking me while I kill the turrets.

Anyone got any thoughts on the matchup or play in general?

Nice video and shows some usefull tips for some ppl im sure.
Not knowing your build and such it is bit hard to go highly on details, but you seem to back off way to much while you were “ahead” on fight and got him low already. That seem to happend good few times and it gave him not only time to regen but get cooldows back and still deal some dps for you from range.
Especially on first fight, you try use earth 5 as finnishing move when he was close to drop and fail it every single time. Sure it looks cool and such when you get to do it like that, but most of ppl already know how to avoid it and if this guy like you say was good, you should have know he knows to get away from it.

But very entertaining to watch after all and some good gameplay in there

Thanks for the video, Intigo.

I’m very happy to see good duels esp. when it includes also an engineer and commentary/hints.

I x-posted it on the engineer forum and included a link to this thread (link is HERE ).

From what I can see …
Your build is like 15+ Air, 15+ Water, 30 arcana
Asuming your gear is something in between zerk and valky, since your conditions tick small
If there is something I would change is … getting Arcane blast instead of Mist form
air 5 + Fire 3 + arc. blast + Fire 5 is insane combo (I do understand he got that trait the turns him into mini form at 25% – so u can’t burst him in 1 go but its a prefect chance to heal yourself )
As I don’t know know where u put the remaining 10 point I would say go for water and get IX trait (cd helps a lot) and 2% extra dam per boon is nice

As for churning earth I do not believe is that useful at 1vs1 (hard to land when enemy is paying attention to you ) … I find it nice as an element of surprise in X vs X

when fighting as a freelance I would probably try to lure engy away from his elite

I would love to know that engi’s build.

It’s understandable that as an ele that engi gave you trouble. Ele wins by attrition, not burst, and a good engi is very good at controlling and stacking boons while laying out powerful conditions. So he can control your damage delivery well, which is small to begin with compared to a mesmer/thief.

I would advice you to save your dodges for his static discharge burst, which happens whenever he uses a tool belt skill (that lightning bolt you see shot at you).

I would probably expect a good mesmer with boon removal, or any class with the ability to remove boons to go in for burst to be able to deal with engis. Boons are too string at the moment, so a thief stealing boons would be pretty good and so would a mesmer or coruupt boon necro.

The first duel is very good from both players. Never met a engineer like that. Would love to meet him, or one close to his skill. Maybe one day I like to see your duels Intigo cause you show that elementalist is more than PVT rerollers Good skill. Hope to fight you aswell one day.

Good fights, much respect friend!
And zenith I will show and explain my build as soon as I have time.
I am sorry I cannot provide any video from my point of view from the fights here, or the once we had tonight but I have not been able to get dxtory to work at a level where I feel comfortable using it! (I am quite picky on keeping my fps up

Had some fights against another Red Guard elem using focus, and that might have been the longest fights I have ever had. Easily 5 ulties each dropped!

I’m 0/15/0/25/30 – pretty standard, but the extra 5 in Water would be better for fighting versus such a Condition-heavy build. As for letting up the pressure, I usually let up when I have no cooldowns up at the time. Gotta have Burning Speed or similar ready to really deal any damage unless I’m auto-attacking with Air.

That other Ele Itkoviana mentioned is actually this guy:

A tie?! Stop slacking Intigo ._.

But no one likes that guy.

We ended up fighting a few more times before RG transferred to SFR and I got royally spanked.

Good stuff. I’ve fought condition engi’s that I don’t stand a chance in hell of winning against. Even when I select all condition removal traits and ether renewal and cleansing fire.

Intigo, were you using -40% condition duration food?

Oh btw, I never made a thread for it, but if anyone is interested in good leash spots for solo capping supply camps:

Intigo, were you using -40% condition duration food?

Nah, we were both using the standard 66% Lifesteal Food (Omnomberry Ghost/Pie). I think it might be worthwhile for him to use Rare Veggie Pizza in this fight. Not sure if -condi duration food is worth it generally, I prefer the passive healing.

Switching to Focus, running 30 Water and using Cleansing Flame greatly increases the odds in a matchup like this. It’s funny how 2 of our hardest fights are versus heavy Condition builds (this Engineer and a Confusion Mesmer).

I really need to get used to using the Focus.

@first video: I think if you’d use the heal-signet instead you wouldn’t have to disengage combat that often and could keep more constant pressure on your oponent. It should be better than ether-renewal even without heal-gear. In regards of condition-remove you could either specc 30 in water or if you really want air-15 use cleansing fire (maybe instead of lightning flash – since good oponents will dodge your churning earth anyway; or mist form – since you mostly used mist form only for your ether-renewal)
