What is the role of Ele for developers
Do to our lower stats we have to sacrafice more for vitality. Our rolls as defined by anet is good at everything but master at nothing. Only problem is warrior outshines us in every aspect. Engi is worse at condi removal but are pretty much upgraded eles. I run 0 30 0 20 20 lately and lose only to spite necros and being outnumbered. We lack the defensive utility to survive many attacks at once and our only way to last is water 15 and evasive arcana. I propose lowering cd of arcane shield to 50s. I’d take the trait too. Improve signets active abilities. Make armour of earth 50 seconds. Add ways to gain health or mitigate damage in traits.
Bad Elementalist
I definitely had a few rough games tonight, but those are largely my own fault rather than that of the class. I overextend a lot and get punished for it, and I tank a lot of things that I shouldn’t. I also played a lot of games in which I wasn’t constantly lying on the floor and instead winning teamfights. So is it really that eles are weak, or are the players (including myself) not good enough yet? I lean toward the latter as I see so many flaws in my own gameplay, but still find myself winning matches because the things that I am doing are not at all weak.
As for roles we can certainly be a burstier dps with scepter, or more of a bruiser with dagger. To survive better work more on positioning, picking your spots to go in, dodging well, optimizing your defensive cooldowns, etc.

I think part of it is the game mode too. Constantly being in the middle of the aoe spam hurts. You land sone nice bursts for sure. The positioning is probably good advice. I should work on it too.

I lean more toward the former. Go back and watch your broadcast after you’re done streaming and compare how many mistakes you make to your opponents. There are so many times when I can miss one dodge at full life and just say “welp, I’m dead.” That pretty much never happens when I play warrior, necro, thief, mesmer or guardian. I need to make multiple consecutive mistakes to lose a fight on other classes.
It’s not realistic to expect yourself to play perfectly to compete with other people who are mediocre or even bad. I feel like I can dodge most of my opponent’s important skills, land most of my important attacks and still lose because ele is mathematically weaker than any of the meta builds. If your burst fails to kill someone, the cooldown before you can really hurt them again is so long that pretty much any class can recover from it, while your opponent can generally try again every 10-15 seconds until you slip up or run out of escapes. Even if they only land part of their burst each time, it can quickly overwhelm an ele’s sustain over an extended fight.
I’m not agreeing with the people who say ele is garbage and can never win, but you basically have to have everything go your way to come out on top against a meta build played by a competent player. Outside of tPvP ele is in an even worse position because of all of the 5 cheese blends that don’t function properly in the conquest meta (PU mesmer, DPS guard, etc.).
we may consider whether or not there is an incarnation of [ele] that would be viable
but balanced. For now, we do not expect it to see serious use.” – ANet
I was flamed on another thread for saying this, but I’m doing really well in SPvP on my ele, and no you won’t find in my post history that I’m a closet warrior.
I worked hard to make a build I felt countered the two different offenses, conditions and power, and I built around that to buff my damage after I built tanky.
I die less than once per game, and when I’ve dueled in SPvP, I’ve had almost a flawless record, but I did come across one build I simply couldn’t beat. The terrormancer necro spec.. I am sure if I dueled it more, I’d come up with something, but I only dueled the guy about 4 times and I lost each one.
I have yet to come across a build I can’t tie at least minus that necro spec. (What really got me were the constant fears plus his dual health pool. I got him to 30% just about each fight despite that)
I’ve played ele for a long time, but not since beta (I play on a mac) and I think if you really practice your build and balance it to all situations, you can do well.
Now I’ll restate what got me flamed in the other thread — I do think we need major help, but I think those who are skilled can make it work.

Guild Wars 2 is very much about player skill. Someone skillful enough can be anyone (theoretically anyway).
Those who are very skillful can do well as an elementalist, but I would argue that they could do much better with any other profession.
Playing as a elementalist is a lot like playing on hard mode. Many times missing with a dodge means death, where other classes have room to make 1 – 3 mistakes. Our DPS is split between Direct Damage and DOT for every weapon set (more noticeable on the scepter and Staff). Our DPS can burst very well, but it is as good as what other classes can achieve (some can do better). And don’t forget most of optimal builds involve a lot of attunement swapping, skill selecting, and ground targeting which is just a ton of information to manage all while having to memorize the animations and cool downs of other classes to time dodges and other active defenses.
If you can spend anytime playing as an elementalist you pick up some really good habits (and lose some bad ones, or die a lot). I do not think many people will challenge that the elementalist is so weak that it cannot do well, most of the agruments are that elementalist have to work harder than any class and sacrifice more than any class just to stay in the game.
When we are finally balanced out there is going to be a lot of other classes crying the Elementalist is OP because we have gotten used to playing on hard mode. I look forwards to the day that a mediocre Elementalist can beat a mediocre warrior about half the time.

Here here. At least you get it. I don’t doubt I could do just as well on another class, but Ele just fits like a glove. I’m sure you know what I’m saying.
On your memorization and calculation note, that’s very accurate. I would say the longer you play elementalist without switching your class up, the better off you are. It’s why I feel like I get better at ele every day I play it. I see a certain animation and boom I know what to do to successfully react to it.
Now another thing to mention is at one point, I would die a ton. I’d win against baddies, I’d tie some goodies, and I’d lose just a lot. I played through it, and I’m so happy I did. When we are finally balanced to a proper state (which would include many buffs) I guarantee I’ll be called OP on a regular basis. As it is now, people are impressed an ele can beat them.
