Q:

Hey guys, I am doing the typical d/d build and I would like how to best utilize it in WvW. I’ve noticed in large zergs that people will spam immobilize me and I die quickly (especially hundred blade move). Should I avoid entering the fray if there are many enemies at once?

I’ve been looking at videos at I never see elementalists getting immobilized or ranged hard. What should I do in those situations? I attune to water but it doesn’t remove the immobalization.

You don’t see it in videos because no one likes watching videos of pov getting owned. I would sit at the back with a staff and nuke people with my aoes. d/d is really for roaming play and it doesn’t quite work in zergs.

I actually do WvW as D/D in zerg and love going in first.

I was a cantrip build bunker, hybrid now. Normally I wait until we’re in 900 range then RtL in. I do general combo and depending on the focus on me I either switch to water, chill, and go straight out using mist and blink, or stay in to do Earth5 with stoneskin. The aim is not to kill anyone, but to mess up the enemy zerg and allow your zerg to move in.

I do hit and runs as opposed to sustained fights since staying too long in a zerg will get me targeted far too much, and even with all the escapes I will still die. Hit and run with no care at who and what I hit ensures that the enemy zerg is disoriented. Most importantly being that in zerg vs zerg runs, most people are sluggish to target you, either by a false sense of security of being in a zerg, or their concentration directed at your zerg instead of a lone suicidal ball of lightning.

Since I’m part of a zerg as well, usually rushing in also encourages other into fighting as well, especially those that usually stay in 2000 range lobbing arrows at the ground hoping that people will suddenly walk into it.

In terms of success rate, I normally survive around 80% of the time. 10% I will get downed or die and will be ressed by my zerg, other 10, I die and my zerg loses and backs ( dies ). It gets progressively worse the more you do it during the same fight, but for opening strikes I rarely have any problems.

Dive straight in to enemy zerg, earthquake – updraft – ring of fire – burning speed – remove your conditions – mist form.. run back to the safety of friendly zerg

I kind of agree that it is tough to go into a massive group alone and come out alive, yet if you look at videos, take Dapheonix for example, they can handle many people and almost never are perma-immobalized.

Switch to dagger/focus for bigger fight, if you don’t want to use your staff.

I like it! Ride the LIghtening into the zerg ftw. I will often try to land a Churning Earth with an Arcane Shield after Earthquake to see how fast they are with their targeting. That is often a suicide run, but if I don’t have time to get my staff out it’s better than running. Running is tiring and hard on the knees. Besides, it’s no fun.

Staff is just so useful in a group with the CC and combo fields.

I try land Churning Earth pretty often.. usually with Dire results! (to me)
considering we have 2KD’s, cripples, slows and aura’s to mess everyone up.. D/D is the perfect class to dive around inside a zerg with.
Sometimes i manage to out maneuver the enemy targeting and can survive for a couple mins before mist forming out, I’m not traditional bunker either.

I only really use staff for defending towers/keeps though, it is pretty OP in zerg vs zerg but if your zerg starts losing.. expect to go down with the ship.
