Q:

EDIT: Title got messed up. Main question was why can we focus on healing when we get nothing for it?

I know that this game tries to get rid of the “holy trinity”, but either way, there still are ways to become both a tank or a healer. And when it comes to healing us Elementalists are especially strong at that, but still it does NOT count as contribution.

I just played for 2 hrs as a healer specced Elementalist in WvW trying to do what was “best” for my server. And sure, we had a lot of progress that would most likely have not been possible without my support!

But still. I got like 5 badges over a constant fighting for 2 hrs. And more or less any “ticks” from attacking or defending anything.

Really. Is this how you want it? Trying to remove the holy trinity by punishing them for their chosen playstyle, even thou you made that playstyle available?!?!

Don’t worry, they will nerf elementalist’s heals then the playstyle won’t be available anymore.

It does seem like anyone that wants to build some sort of tanky, healy, or supporty spec is punished for it in this game. If you’re not going for the deeps than according to ANet’s mechanics, you’re doing it wrong. I get that they wanted to get rid if the traditional trinity role system and that’s great. But there are still a lot of people who enjoy playing non-dps roles and ANet did say there would be room for that sort of thing in this game. They just need to properly reward people for it and not nerf it (see Jon Sharp’s 3 posts in this thread for the Guardian/Ele defensive and healy support specs they think are a bit too strong – https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/pvp/Quick-update/first)

ya while playing a heal spec you get no type of points i noticed. everyone runs in and beats on 2 guys, I lay down fire field do 3 blast finishers and then start throwing out healing… fight ends .. we win i dont get any points…. CHANGE THIS

Well, Staff Elementalists have 2 healing abilities, they both have fairly long cooldowns, what are you doing in the time when you can’t cast them? You DO know that your blast finishers in ANY, even other classes’ (ranger) healing field you will cause HUGE healing, not only that but EVERY blast finisher on ANY class with blast finishers can cause such healing, just like warriors can cause healing bolts with twirl (one of the most rare ones for me to see)

Using your blast finishers to heal with other classes or players fields will net you damage as well as heal those around you, I like to plant a field in the thick of battle and run in and use arcane finisher as it is instant then out again …major aoe damage as well as healing. Not to mention that even in earth your #1 will cause regen when used in a field, oh and tons of blast finishers there….Which is why it is hard for me to fathom why people would just be sitting in water spamming #1 and using healing fields on cooldown.

I use all combos that are available to me, and even after all that #1 Water on Staff is also healing, and without cooldown.

There is no “free” time where I don’t focus on getting my team/group healed.

You are better off swapping to Earth to get everyone Protection Boons when you’ve used the 2 healing abilities on the staff as Protection will save a LOT more HP then the messily amount given from Water Blast.

I only go to water to use Gyeser/Healing Rain, and I only drop them when Arcane Blast is good to go for the finisher, or to drop Frozen Ground.

The healing on Water Blast is extraordinarily small; you’d probably be better off using control skills to prevent damage so there’s less to heal, and let allies do more damage.

Every extra second you spend in water is one more second that water attunement doesn’t go on cd, meaning one more second that you have to wait to switch back to Water Attunement for Healing Ripple+Elemental Attunement+Cleansing procs+Eruption Blast Combo.

Water Blast is a horrible horrible spell in almost every situation.

I don’t know what you guys are on. I told you I do use other skills/combos.

But either way it doesn’t matter since it’s not even relevant to the topic. The issue here is to get healing to be values as participation in events and killing, not to discuss the different ways you can play your healer.

The reason it is relevant is because you should not be solely focused on one thing (healing and water attunment) that you are not even getting credit, you’re much more valuable to your team and others around you if you utilize everything in your arsenal for healing and support, and it will net you bigger rewards to boot, instead of saying “I’m a healer!” and MASHMASHMASH #1. Hell, some of the BEST healing come from strategically using damaging finishers that just so happen to be aoe as well.
Simply because that is the way THIS game is designed.

No, it’s not relevant. As long as you contribute with healing and/or buffs, they should count towards progession in events and kills. It should not be limited to damage. It’s all a part of the actual contribution, and hence should be part of the mechanical contribution.

There is no reason for it to be like it is now. Except if they don’t want people to teamplay that is…

the problem with the removal of the holy trinity here, is that… well have you ever tried running a dungeon with 4 greatsword warriors running deep strike and a lot of signets…. and 1 warrior running a supportive build?

yeh thats painful.

Ran a CM last night (story mode) with 1 tanky guardian, 3 warriors (1 gs signet, 1 banner warrior 1 supportive shout dual axe warrior) and a very VERY glass cannon thief. This group (my guild group even) was dropping left and right. I switched to my ele and healed with my dps build in water attunement (scepter/dagger) it was still painful, but a smidge less.

So now I have for the good of the glass cannons, switched to a water spec, switched all my gear over to healing, and now we are running stuff just fine.

Sure maybe Anet wants any group to be viable, but thats just not the reality, sometimes you are going to have to bite the bullet..

But just because my ele IS a water healing spec now, doesnt mean she cant also dps, in fact with her using a staff, my auto attack on water DOES damage and Heal for quite a lot (thanks to the gear and runes).

But the point im trying to make, maybe the other 4 people suck, maybe they dont, but I do know that if I were running this group in WvW and I got punished for being a healer and actually doing my job, i’d be mighty upset
