I’ve heard and seen so many guides saying that d/d is one of the most useful setups. I’ve been playing it since I joined a few days ago, and it’s okay. I feel like the staff has better spells and has a lot more range… Just wondering why d/d is considered amazing?

If you are playing against something with a brain then d/d beats staff, otherwise its just a question of do you like range or not.

Staff is clunky, slow, and has low damage. The first two make it bad in PvP, and the latter makes it bad in PvE.

It’s insane in WvW zergs, however.

ranger longbow/shortbow, warrior longbow/rifle, these are the serious range dps weapons in the game. while casters can use staves, the damage output of staff on any class is fairly low.

mostly ele staff is used for area denial/control.

D/D doesn’t really shine to higher levels (unless you are playing PvP in the Heart of the Mists where you are lvl 80). And once you master the skills you will love it. Going from D/D to my usual S/F and sometimes Staff builds just feel slow in comparison. Infact, the only other class whose speed I have enjoyed since is the warriors axe / x and the necros axe / focus at lower levels. I wanted to level Flame Decimator (my char flame engineer) but the pace of combat doesn’t feel as good.

Because sPvP. D/d is best for sPvP.

In PVE, staff and S/D are both great for their roles.

because its the most mobile if the persons smart they won’t stay still and the D/D has the most mobility while still keeping a lot of dps.
but if their stupid and stay in place then scepter is your go to weapon, due to the fact that fire 2,3,4,5 = insta downed for everybody.

D/D isn’t the best for sPvP…

You’ll be required in close range, while having no quick option out. Hence you’ll be forced to take multiple cantrips and/or use clerics, which in it’s turn limits your damage output.

S/D has much better and sustainable burst and peeling capabilities.

D/D is only better in WvW due to the mindless spamming of aoe that is required in that game mode. And perhaps in 1v1’s vs phantasm mesmers.
