We’ve seen this happen several times in the past. One of the bigger guilds in tier 1 gave Mel some props on the forums for his fighting style a few weeks ago and a day later a lot of elementalists had switched to try out the build and weapon set… heh

@Cempa Glad you liked it & Thx for watching. S/D Eles are still a rare breed out in WvW Tier 1. You’ll always find D/D Eles running around and then a some Staff Eles here and there. Personally I HATED Scepter at first and leveled to 80 w/ Staff and did some WvW w/ Staff for a long time until I got roasted by a D/D Ele one day so I tried that out, but then got frustrated with having to commit to melee range and people running away from me so I forced myself to use Scepter until I got good with it. I find it synergiszes really well with small group play and I love playing WingMan™ for D/D spec Eles.

@Gully I hope most of these guys stay D/D and Staff personally…. More fun fighting em that way

Here’s a 4v4 MirrorMatch™ duel vs [lulz] w/ Elementalist, Thief, Guardian, & Mesmer composition. The [lulz] Ele is D/D spec. There’s a conflict of interest going on when any D/D Ele is low on health, but still wants to apply pressure and damage because you have to play close in to get any hits which usually means you’re gonna be exchanging blows. With Scepter you get extra range as well as some skills that don’t require facing the opponent to hit them which REALLY comes in handy when you’re being focused.

Good build, very nice gameplay. I was trying to bait you so I could fight you by myself, and not with the 10 others you had with you. Still managed to live for a little while wit all you focusing on me, but I wanted to fight you my yourself!

The only Ele I remember from last night that I (we) was repeatedly going against was this Red Sylvari D/D Ele from [RotV] “Ravens of the Veil”. (I actually had some nice fights against this Green Sylvari [RotV] D/D Ele from several weeks back and was wondering if it was the same person that mighta just done a MakeOverKit™) I was trying to 1v1 that Ele but she was running around with this annoying Mesmer so I really didn’t get a chance to.

We were running 7 deep at the height of it last night in JQ BL so the other 3 musta been pubs focusing you too. We spent most of the night trying to avoid this large [UL] “Ultimate Legion” group while trying to catch any stragglers here and there in the ruins.

What’s your guild tag is it [PD]? I checked out yalls website and I like the design. Thanks for the build/gameplay props and if we run into each other tonight I’ll tell the guys to back off so we can go at it.

Hey Raif,

I was diggin thru last nights footage to see if I could find you in there and I found you up in this clip where my main focus was this [UL] Thief. It was at SoRs spawn just like you said cept the video tells a different story entirely.

• You come in @ 2:40 along with the [UL] Thief
• It’s a “fair” 2v2 encounter with you standing still when I engage you. I didn’t notice you trying to bait me, I just took initiative for FirstStrike™.
• I Immediately swith to the [UL] Thief cause that’s who I really wanna kill.
• Fight turns into 2v3 then 3v3 while we retreat back.
• You eventually get focused by 5 of us (not 10) @ 4:00 and by then your [Ether Renewal], [Mist Form], [Armor of Earth] is on cooldown so you get screwed.
• You respawn and start to refocus me while I SlamDunk™ a [UL] Staff Ele.
• In the end it’s US being chased by 10 of you guys with you in the lead targeting me.

Nice catch! Yea I was over-exxagerating on the numbers, I tend to do that sometimes!

Oh yea it was certainly fun and I was in NO way complaining about the numbers! It’s WvW. Sometimes it’s fair, sometimes its lopsided and it flows very quickly from one to the other!

I had a blast fighting you guys and it was certainly refreshing fighting something OTHER than a D/D elementalist. It’s why I was focusing you, cause it was fun fighting you!

I certainly hope to run into you guys again, you were working as a group pretty well, I had a hard time by myself (I wasn’t coordinating with the others) props to you all. I even learned something from watching the video on your end about my own gameplay as I tended to miss the updraft on you at least once in that video. And I learned that nice trick you used there to Lightning Flash and updraft your target. Always good to learn stuff.

I’m always up for a challenge and certainly not afraid to admit that I’m decent/good at the elementalist (I like to think I’m good at it, but I know there are others who are WAY better) and learn new stuff. I’m in no delusion that I’m the best at PVP. I certainly have a long ways to go and a lot to learn.

I’ve only tried D/D yet cause it’s also the most fun to me. I might try S/D for a challenge. What I dislike though is that your main damage comes from Air while the other attunements are more a hit or miss. I feel D/D is more reliable.

@vinceftw Yea I can see how S/D play comes off that way. That’s how it came off to me intially as well. Keep in mind you have Dagger offhand which means you have access to all the Attunements offhand Dagger spells. So you still have the following Dagger offhand damage skills:

• Air [Ride the Lightning]
• Fire [Ring of Fire] & [Fire Grab]
• Earth [Earthquake] & [Churning Earth]

Now here’s what I comparitively like about Scepter vs Dagger mainhand. Remember what’s “good” for me, might be “bad” for you and your playstyle so I don’t want anybody to twist this up like I’m saying Scepter is better than Dagger. I can only share with yall why I personally prefer the Scepter over Dagger and possibly give you guys some insight on Scepter aspects that you might not understand and appreciate.

Air

• [Arc Lightning] 900 range + it’s a channeling skill which means you can swap attunements while this is going off. Dagger’s [Lightning Whip] is only 350 range while it gives more damage, and to me, the damage doesn’t matter if they’re outta my range.
• [Lightning Strike] Instant spike w/ low cooldown & Best of all it’s 360 degrees no LOS required and can be used while knocked down, evading, etc. +900 range… pretty awesome. Dagger’s [Lightning Touch], to me, is “ok”. 300 range and long cooldown IMO. The weakness applied in my case isn’t necessary because I use [Glyph of Elemental Power] and can cast that in Air to get Weakness for 30s (as well as Swiftness due to Inscription trait)
• [Blinding Flash] Yet another instant cast & Best of all it’s 360 degrees no LOS required and can be used while knocked down, evading, etc. +900 range… pretty awesome. For my particular playstyle I like having an instant cast Blind. You can play games with your opponent by instantly blinding them as well as have a “safety” if you happen to get knocked down and your opponent decides to pounce on you. Dagger’s [Shocking Aura] is great. I’d rather have an instant blind every 10s than [Shocking Aura] every 25s.

Fire

• [Flamestrike] 900 range and it applies burning… I like this because it synergizes with [Fire Grab] having a burning bonus. Dagger’s [Dragon’s Claw] is dope too, it just has shorter range at 400.
• [Dragon’s Tooth] The skill every D/D Ele loves to hate on. The beauty of this skill is its 360 degrees no LOS required @ 900 range. So basically it gives you options. You can drop a bomb from afar, drop the bomb onto yourself, drop the bomb and roll into it, etc. Basically anybody complaining about this skill just simply sucks at using it. I routinely use this right after a [Updraft] or [Earthquake] and at the very least it forces the player to use up an evade. I think most people overlook this aspect and because it doesn’t “connect” at times, they think it sucks. With skilled use, even if you “miss” it forces the opponent to react and make a choice. Either get the hell out the way or get dumped on. Being a Blast Finisher is nice too. Having said all that, Dagger’s [Dragon’s Breath] is just awesome so I can see why D/D eles would love that skill as well especially over [Dragon’s Tooth].
• [Pheonix] 900 Range, Blast Finisher, Vigor, & Cures Conditions (on return connect). Once again I like it for the options and in this case it has some extra perks w/ Cond Removal. Using it close range is the same mechanic as [Ring of Fire]. Using it far synergizes with [Dragon’s Tooth]s slow timing and I try to “sandwich” the two skills onto an area. Connecting at longer ranges just takes practice and anybody complaing about it simply sucks at it. Dagger’s [Burning Speed] is just awesome, I love it, and you’re gonna need it to close gaps being D/D.

Water

• [Ice Shards] 900 Range keeps this in line with all other scepter “1” attacks which I prefer because I personally don’t like the mix-match ranging of the D/D “1” attacks. Dagger’s [Vapor Blade] is nice as well and generous for being 600 range + Vulnerability. The difference between the two seems to be that [Ice Shards] are more “homing” whereas [Vapor Blade] seems to linearly shoot out in a line.
• [Shatterstone] can get a ::kitten motion::. It still has its merits tho, I usually cast this onto myself followed up by [Water Trident]. It does have 900 range tho and I’ve learned to appreciate the delay before explosion to add onto a burst combo. Dagger’s [Cone of cold] is “cool”. As a healing option, I prefer [Water Trident] over [Cone of Cold]
• [Water Trident] Once again you have options with 900 range to either heal ontop of yourself or support your teamates with a remote heal while doing some damage too. I love that it heals you for a chunk instead of having to channel it like [Cone of Cold]. Dagger’s [Frozen Burst] is pretty nice, in my case I don’t need it because I use [Glyph of Elemental Power] which I can cast in Water to get 30s worth of Chills. (as well as Regeneration due to Inscription trait)

Earth

• [Stone Shards] It’s the range I love with this at 900 vs 300 with Dagger’s [Impale]
• [Rock Barrier] & [Hurl] +250 Toughness with the option to [Hurl] which I personally like to do before I go into other combos. [Hurl] is also 360 degrees no LOS required and you can do it while knocked down, evading, etc. Dagger’s [Ring of Earth] is pretty nasty on damage and I like that too. I love the option I have with it. Personally I don’t require cripple because I use [Glyph of Elemental Power] and can cast this in Earth to get 30s of cripples. (as well as Protection due to Inscription trait)
• [Dust Devil] This ones slow moving so it requires some timing, but it does come in handy being able to blind multiple foes. Does damage too which is nice. I like to play games with blinds when I can and act like I’m too dumb to dodge a move when I’m really just setting the person up by blinding their attack. Dagger’s [Magnetic Grasp] is pretty sick, I like that too, and it’s pretty much a neccesity with D/D since ranging is always an issue. Personally I don’t care about being immobilized by it because I can still attack/blind/or clear it.

So there you have it in a nutshell. You decide what’s “good” or “bad” for yourself. I see too many posts asking that question about various skills, abilities, traits, etc and I feel it’s such a poorly framed question. Step up to any chick and ask her if MagnumCondoms™ are “good” and she’ll tell you if you’re working with a large package then “yes it’s good”, otherwise “no, it’s bad”. Meanwhile, most of you guys aren’t even getting laid cause you’re too busy asking somebody instead of going out and doing it.

Have fun, experiment, and see for yourself. Good, Bad, Right, Wrong, is simply a perception of your own reality. It’s all an illusion. If it works for you then great, don’t listen to anybody trying to tell you otherwise.

Ahh yes, its refreshing to see S/D ele’s who know their stuff. D/D is too overplayed, easy and forgiving. S/D is far more respectable and a great setup! Its balanced and fair and requires thought. I like your videos and find your content fun hence why your on my friend list and hope to make some myself of another class in the future, quite possibly my guardian, till then, keep dunking!

@skinnyb Hah! Thanks Bro! Yea.. TC’s the only server we’ve been considering to switch to mainly cause we have a lot of respect for yall and had a lot of fun when we were matched up with you guys back in Feb. BTW So today I FINALLY… FINALLY put our duels up from back in Feb. I wanted to do more of a Build Explaination video and showcase it in there, but times just slipping by so I figured I’d better just throw em up yanno.

For those who don’t know skinnyb is [DIS] “Mister” Cheng, a former D/D Ele who I had the pleasure of becoming rivals with on the battlefield. One thing led to another and he went from being my rival to my Doppelgänger™. In this vid here he’s running the “NutCracker” Build I came up with… and pwns me with it. It’s the first time I’m fighting a good S/D Ele (cause you know… we’re a rare breed and all) and it’s also his first few days playing S/D. I know he’s gotta be sick with it now cause everytime I fought the guy he’s stepped his game up.

@Raif We live in a PerceptiveReality™ so if what you originally posted is how you percieved your reality to be, then I can understand that completely. On the other hand, if you consciously made the decision to stretch the truth, then shame on you for telling DuckTales™ WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

I know how it goes on the battlefield though, you see somebody rocking your same class and we all have something to prove. I’ve learn the hard way to try and stay disciplined enough to take the entire fight and more variables into account other than my own Ego™ of wanting to roast another Ele. Once I knew you were rocking [Ether Renewal], I knew i’d only have a short window to try and burst you down before you’d heal again so I kept you on tabs while focusing on the thief and other players.

Glad you were able to learn something from the vid too man… I invite everyone to record footage, not so much as in to post up vids and brag about em, but they make a great learning tool for reviewing and getting better. I’ve learn a lot just watching vids where I’m getting roasted by somebody. Just for the record, you pretty much was playing by yourself since you can only coordinate so much w/ pubs. (Which is why I said it was “fair”, because it wasn’t really since me and Hedrokka were on comms)

I love S/D. It’s toss-up between S/D and staff for my favorite Ele weapon set. I see the fun in D/D but it never grabbed me like S/D did. I like still feeling like a mage rather than a tanky spellsword.

Started playing the build this week and I’m enjoying it a lot. One thing to note, however, is that Glyph of Elemental power does not give 100% uptime on the conditions; it gives “a chance to apply a condition based on your attunement.”

This guy needs more props! Thanks for all the vids, it was good to see that play style work well.

Yea blame it on Anet™ and their elusive skill descriptions… after further investigating the effects of the skill i looked on the wiki and it shows as follows.

• The condition inflicted depends on the Attunement under which the glyph was cast. For example, if you cast this while attuned to fire, it will cause burning for its full duration, even if you later attune to a different element.
• The chance of the effect triggering is high (around 50% for fire and water, and 25% for air and earth) but has a cooldown of about 5 seconds.
• The cooldown to inflict a condition appears to be counted for each individual target, which means that it is possible to inflict condition on multiple enemies with AoE attacks.

I love the scepter! I have run this with my ele since I started, been gone a long time from her though. Just curious though it seems we are still basically an attrition class?

After the upcoming patch I’m probably gonna play S/D exclusivly again :p. Got a great build in mind
