WvWvW as a heavy PVPer
I say suck it up and grind for dungeon armour. It won’t take long to get your entire set by farming tokens. It takes too long to earn money in wvw and is too reliant on how well your server is doing.
Sanctum of Rall 04/2013-
So, I PVP all the time because I prefer killing people rather than NPCs (that’s why I like online games. If I wanted to kill NPCs, I’d play a single player game like dishonored). I’ve been doing WvWvW lately but I’m severely under-geared because I find the PVE in this game monotonous and redundant and refrain from doing it unless necessary. I just recently leveled to 80 just so I could be more competitive but I have no money and bad gear. My crafting is low because I find that boring too.
Can I WvWvW enough that I’ll finally be able to afford good gear? Or do I have to suck it up and play PVE (or perhaps just go back to PVP)? While I’m undergeared, should I use staff? I’ve been trying to roll mainly with DD and only switching to staff when I have to, but I’m a lot weaker than what I’m used to from PVPing. It seems like I might be better off rocking staff and hanging in the background.
I think I’m wearing lvl 60 gear? I have like 30 silver. Can’t afford anything.
Sounds like your a pretty poor WvW’er to. Make sure your always running with your guild in WvW to avoid deaths and you should make cash. I generally made about a gold an hour when leveling my thief purely on wvw (not great I know..but still…30s?). Also don’t waste your money on siege. Your guild should understand that as a leveling character. Also, if your server is in the lead…be around on Fridays as most guilds take advantage of this to karma farm. A Karma farm is basically a zerg of about 30 or so that does nothing but run around and take camps/hit npc groups that give karma. It’s a great way to level and make loads of karma.
Also, you should do a LOT more research into this game. ie: Karma armor and Badges of Honour. If your truly leveling by wvw….you should have (by lvl 80) more then enough karma and badges to outfit yourself in a full set of exotic karma armor and exotic badge of honour weapons like my thief.

I just started WvWvW yesterday and spent all my money leveling my cooking just to get to 80. Hence, no money. And my guild doesn’t WvWvW. I spent a lot of time in WvWvW walking around (and so much walking it was) trying to figure out what to do. I learned that you’re supposed to head to the places marked on the map as battles and to defend keeps and kitten. Anyone happen to have a good guide on WvWvW for eles? The only guide I see is vids of daphoenix owning poor suckers 5 at a time.
But basically, I should either go do dungeons or run with a guild that does WvWvW? And which dungeon should I run? And how do I buy this armor after doing dungeon runs? … Yeah, don’t know much about PvE stuff. I find it boring as kitten.
You could run AC (Ascalonian Catacombs), it’s fairly easy to get geared from there – that’s where I picked up my power/vit/toughness set from. If you do the three paths and one extra you could get one piece a day, or if you have other characters to run it with you could get multiple pieces a day. The vendor is in Lion’s Arch near where you portal in from the Heart of the Mists.
Another bonus is you might get some exotics to sell from the chests in AC, on top of the money you get from completion.

You are a heavy PvP’er but you joined a guild where nobody PvP’s?
And why did you only start WvW when you where already 80 if you hate crafting and PvE?
Im similar to you in a couple of aspects.
I also love to PvP, so what i did right at the start of this game was make my very first toon an AoE’er with good survivability…. so i made a warrior. She is parked in Orr and never leaves. I play her for 1-2 hrs a day and make enough gold to outfit my (PvP) Toons and keep them in oils and food
If you dont want to go down this route (leveling a warrior to 80 takes a few days) then i dont know what to say tbh. All MMO’s require you to do some PvE or Crafting… nobody is gonna give you a full set of lvl80 shinies for free.
TBH most MMO’s have a steep gear grind, far steeper than this game. I found it ridiculously easy to outfit all my characters in Exotics (i have 5 lvl 80’s btw)

generally it’s pretty easy to find your server’s zerg. that’s what i do while leveling up with no guild
Man it sucks that you have to pve to wvw.
Well, my guild is dying since it’s mostly made up of rl members and they’ve stopped playing due to boredom—but a few did wvwvw while they were playing. I just didn’t. I PVPed with a few other members. And I hated PVE the more I played it. It was the same cycle of horrible quests over and over and over and ugh, the kittenty storyline from the main quest—god it sucked. Who writes for all these mmo games? So mindnumbingly boring.
I’ve never been a fan of grind. I play games to have fun so I never understood the mmo concept of grind. I actually usually play online action games (dragon nest, s4 league, rakion, vindictus, gunz). I’m new to the WoW like combat of GW2 and find it fun in its own way in PVP thanks to the elementalist. But the PVE is so boring. So so boring. Zzz.
But it seems like in general, everyone seems to agree that AC is the best route; so, I guess I’ll prob do AC runs. Thanks. Wish PVP gave PVE stuff just so I could wvwvw. Sigh.
Are you picking up your bags in wvw? You should have gotten a full suit of level appropriate greens at least, as well as decent money.

Time to find yourself a WvW guild and get yourself on a more WvW based server if you aren’t already on one. Being in a guild that has at least 8-10 folks in wvw when you play changes your exp a LOT.

you should do tixx dungeon before it goes.
made 2 gold in one run.

bad move
a lv 60 wearing lv 60 gear is much stronger than a lv 80 wearing lv 60 gear
You can certainly get geared up form just doing wvw (gold to guy stuff of the trade post, karma to buy stuff from karma vendors, tokens to buy stuff from the wvw token vendors). That said, it’s alot less effort to just do a few dungeons to get geared up. If you post what stats your interested in it will help people make suggestions better. There is a useful website that shows stats and where you can get armour and so on but I don’t seem to have it. Perhaps someone else can post it.
You can get “pvp armour” (power/tough/vit) from spending wvw tokens in bg, buying it from karma vendors in cursed shore (plenty of karma to be earned in wvw), or by doing any of the following dugneins Ascelonian Catacombes, Sorrow’s Embrace, Honour of the Waves. All 3 paths of AC are fast and easy so getting gear there will be quick, same for SE path 1 (20-30 mins). Can’t recall HotW, but path 1 used to bve fast there too. Get some from dungeons, soem from karma, some from wvw vendros and spend your gold buying runes/sigils and you should be sorted relatively easily. The dugneons aren’t so bad and they don’t take much time.
Search soldier’s spineguard on the TP and you’ll probably get a rare one for <15s (only asceneded is better which isn’t worht the effort).
I leveled my ele from about 25 to 80 entirely in WvW.
I have never been in any of the dungeons even once.
I buy my armor with karma, weapons with badges, and jewelry with gold.
Since I saved all that stuff while I was leveling I was able to get most of my exotics when I hit 80, not sure how long it would take you starting from now.
I am using the karma armor from the Balthazar guy in Orr. Three pieces of it are PVT, the other three are Prec/Tough/Con Dmg. If you wanted all PVT like many people recommend there is probably a different karma vendor in Orr that sells what you want, I just never looked into it because the gear I have works well enough for me.
The Orr armor costs 42,000 karma per piece. Even without a guild, running with the zerg you should be able to earn enough karma to buy a piece every day or two.
WvW cash isn’t bad. Also salvage the yellows you get from WvW sell the globs and use that cash to buy gear. I crafted my own gear, it didn’t take much to level to 400.
Do AC Explore path 1/2/3 once each day for 6 days and you have your AC armor (I recommend the power/toughness/vitality armor for WvW, but whatever you want depending on how you play). Less then a week of grinding about 1.5 hours a day is not really that grindy. Use the www.gw2lfg.com website, you’ll find groups quickly and learn the paths pretty fast too. Also, running dungeons is the quickest way to make gold, so by the time you have your exotic AC armor, you’ll have enough gold saved up to buy superior runes, jewelry and trinkets for the extra punch.
Next is finding the right build, your WvW build will be similar to your PvP build, but there are differences, you never have 20 guys target you at once in PvP, but as an ele that’ll happen against a good team in WvW, they’ll come after you quickly to make sure you’re not dropping boons on your teammates. PvP for me is a lot more 1v1 situations, WvW isn’t, so play around with builds and enjoy I love WvW
I would definitely suggest running with a group. In a 5-man party, you get MUCH better drops and you’ll probably survive better than if you were on your own. Your server probably has a mix of small and large WvW guilds – join either, or both, depending on your desires.
With a 5-man group, you could easily make circuits killing dolyaks and taking supply camps. This will net you gold, loot, and karma for better gear. Considering how valuable supply is, taking supply camps and killing dolyaks will be of great benefit to your team. Oh yes, always carry supply and use it to help build siege or repair walls.
D/D grants you tons of mobility and is very well suited for smaller skirmishes. I often switch to Staff when assaulting towers/keeps and when fighting larger groups. If you stay with D/D during a keep assault, your job will mainly be keeping an eye out and preventing the enemy from entering their keep.
If you’re looking for good solo/small group skirmishes, consider the routes your enemy takes to reinforce the larger battles taking place on a map and cut them off. Dolyak escorting can also yield decent group skirmishes, but since they removed the rewards, it can feel like a waste of time if you’re not fighting anyone.
Ok. Got my game plan down. Do AC Explore. Join a WvW guild and work in a party raiding supply camps and killing dolyaks. Use DD for traveling. Switch to staff for tower/keeps and zergs (?). Always carry supply to use for siege building and repairing walls. I’m not sure if I should get PVT armor or focus on toughness and healing. In PVP, I use clerics amulet for healing and toughness and I’m ok with running with 14k ish hp. I hardly die, but is that not a good idea in WvW? Should I get PVT? Or is power toughness healing power ok? As for jewelry, do I buy that from TP or craft or is there a merchant for it?
A few thoughts:
1) lvl 71+ exotic wpns are reasonable damage while you wait, and of course cost less;
2) http://dulfy.net/2012/09/08/gw2-templegod-karma-armor-sets/ = 42k karma each. You’re getting karma anyways from WvW, so use it. No dungeons required.
3) http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mystic_weapons <- if you get 30 coins and some gold, you should be able to forge a mystic weapon.
or skip all that grind boring stuff and save your precious time and spend 20-40 $ to by gems and equip yourself with all you want. or pay 10$ and play the trading post for some days.
buying equip with rl money is not evil. and ask yourself: do you want to do stuff you hate for hours(days…weeks…) when you coud skip that with 1-2h of rl work?

How much gold do I end up getting and what oor where should I spend it? Tp? You bringup a good point.
this is a site where you can find a trading post out of game. there you can also find the gem to gold transfer rate. so at the moment you would get ~11gold /10$.
ckeck what you need and what it costs (buy offer) and calculate
or you can take that gold to play the trading post, buy low sell high and that kind of stuff. but it is risky and could waste your 10$ ;P
don’t know you or what you are doing in rl, but imo if you can spend 50$ without noticing, skip that AWEFUL pve grinding crap, spend money, buy stuff, go wvw, have fun :>
Thanks a lot grimm (and everyone else). I’m gonna farm AC though. I can’t seem to buy PVT armor from trading post so buying gems isn’t gonna work. Seems like the easiest way to get PVT armor+weapons is from farming AC. Sigh. Farming. I live in abig city. Why do I want to farm…
(edited by SecondtoNone.7549)
There is also another way to buy exotics( Power, Toughness, Vitality).
Go to orr and when the temples are occupied you can buy exotic armor pieces for 42000 karma per. This is what most WvWers do when they hit 80 after leveling in WvW. I think for Pow Tou Vit gear there are like 3 or 4 light armor pieces you can buy total from temples. Each temple armor has different stats for each piece, but if you go through them all you can buy like 5 of the same stats on different pieces.
So after you buy them with karma(which you should have plenty of if you WvWed or PveEed and did dailies and monthlies.) fill in the rest with dungeon token exotics, TP gear or badge exotics.
If you think farming is not fun then here’s a good list to do if you want to get your gear and not be bored while doing it.
- Do Dungeon runs for just 1 hour ( Ascalonian Catacombs / Citadel of Flame etc. )
- After 1 hour of dungeon run, 1 hour or 2 hours of WvW.
Rinse and repeat.
That way its not tedious. Pushing yourself to do things you don’t find interesting is hard but sometimes you have to do it. If you want to be a great player then you need to work on what needs to be worked at.
I don’t know if pvt is where it’s at . I rather have healing power over V myself…
Yeah. I’m on the fence myself. Power vit toughness? Or power healing toughness?
