so i am trying out pvp on ele. I have a staff build that seems to be doing ok. The last match i was in i was called a kittening idiot and was told to stay in pve. I had most healing and most revives(they kept dying). I checked out the metabattle site and my build is very simliar to tempest d/f auramancer. Am i really hindering my team that much by using staff instead of d/f?

Thanks for your time.

D/f is a better support option but staff is acceptable if you are good. When I have time I can help you w it in game. Can’t really teach how to be good at ele. Its all about getting a feel for it.

lots of training. :-). And staff is higher skill cap in pvp. Only met very few good staff eleĀ“s in pvp. You need to control (forsee) enemy movements. Things like earth signet are good for staff.

Lot of time the problem is not the build, you can do well also with a non-metabuild, but is what you do in a pvp match… I mean, rotation, what you do in a teamfight etc etc
Pvp community is a bit salty sometime, so easily they rage at teammates, but if they raged at you, you have to take in mind that it might be not a build problem, but a gameplay problem.

Staff is hands down the best support weapon on the elementalist, especially in organised team play. Not the d/f! But only when played correctly.
You should read my guide (see my signature).

I once played a match on staff “by accident” (forgot to switch weapon before the match started) during off season and was surprised to find that it worked so much better than d/f. Ended up playing many more matches on staff and it was awesome. However I did switch back to d/f for the season because getting flamed before the match even starts or even after the match is won is annoying as kitten. Currently ranked pvp is so toxic that I’d rather limit myself by playing a weapon set which for me personally is not the first choice than giving people any more “reason” to flame…

tldr: staff isn’t bad, people are just toxic

Before serious pvp and HoT happened I started my journey with ele in wvw as staff zerk backline….thanks to experiencing being glass’est thing around I learned how to annoy, punish and survive while being chased by angry mob of angry players. Imagine how I felt when i started pvp and first time used cele.

So my advice would be: go to hotjoin → use berserker (hardcore mode) or maruder amulet → learn to survive on these amulets →learn to survive on unranked →go ranked if you feel that staff is your thing. After this steps should have right reflexes and developed muscle memory.

Was depressed ele…now depressed druid

It’s actually easier to learn the weapon while running bunker, because it’s more forgiving and mistakes can be easier dealt with. Ofcourse, after getting the basics, nothing is stopping you from going hardcore :P

I wouldn’t start bunker amulet – it’s not punishing enough – it kinda makes wrong impression that you can facetank damage. Starting from zerk gives healthy reactions needed on the class with lowest healthpool and armor in the game. It benefit’s for you if want to stay being dps ele or bunker playstyle. True art of bunkering is not getting hit!

That’s why i also hate tempest – it benefits more passive approach and benefit’s you only when you get hit.

Running zerker is actually a good way to get good at it, however I wouldnt recommend to a beginner.
