elementalist and guardian
Elementalist. Higher skill ceiling, better utility, more versatile, strong in every game’s aspects.

to me, ele is much harder to learn for a beginner. Guardian is more easier to play imo. Get both lol.
Elementalist will give you a lot more room to grow. They are viable and useful in all game modes and they can be played fairly straight forward if you’re still not comfortable cycling through all 4 attunments(IE, in PvE you can just as easily stay in fire attunement a majority of the time).
elementalist is currently the most op class in all game modes with one of the most interesting mechanics and skill available and one of the highest skill ceiling within all classes.
Elemantalist op? I doubt it
My first 80 was a Guardian, and my second is an Elementalist.
I got the Guardian to 80 first, since it was much easier to learn, and provided a good tool to learn the GW2 mechanics and how they differed from WoW. However, around level 40 it got boring as heck, and I started an Elementalist which, from what I learned, promised more interaction. It was frustrating compared to the Guardian, and I joked for a while that I kept it around so that I could remind myself as to why I didn’t play an Elementalist.
However, over a couple of evenings of “reminding myself why I didn’t play an elementalist”, things just started to click. While I won’t claim to be good at PvP, I became markedly less bad, even occasionally winning 1v1s. It’s much more rewarding for me mentally to pull off the Air 345 Fire 345 Earth 42 Water 45 Air 11111 combo than it is for me to run in circles trying to get my GS hits to land.
My advice: Have multiple toons. I also played a Warrior and Ranger to the high 60s/70s. This game is very alt-friendly, and it doens’t hurt much to try out a new class every now and then.
Final advice: Make them look different. We all know that Norn is the best race for everything, especially elementalist, but it gets boring staring at the same backside through 4 characters.
Also what Serenadin said. Gearing characters doesn’t really become expensive at all until 80, so there’s really no harm in leveling an alt. And who knows, you may accidentally figure out which class you like more simply by which one levels up to 80 the first. It might be a weird concept, but level a class because you enjoy the process, not because you’ll think you might like playing it at level 80, because if it turns out that you don’t, those resources and time will feel like a waste.
I would recommend guardian, not because it is worse or better than ele, but it is easier to start up on.
Elementalists REALLY depend on their traits to survive, and it can be very hard as a new player still learning to dodge. It also requires juggling more skills and swapping through attunements, which is harder to do.
Guardians are naturally more tanky and forgiving for someone starting out. They are also great in all game modes.
The nice thing about GW2 is that leveling doesn’t take very long, so if you wanna switch, its not hard. Also, you will eventually want to play every class anyway.
Beware of the doom of the Elemantalist.
I am playing more then 2 years this game, still only lvl 80 that I have is Ele. After the Ele all the other classes feels boring and limited.
I tried several times to level my other classes to 80 but I got bored and gave up.
The next thing come near to the complexity of Ele is Engi but I don’t see them that often in PVE I thing they are not viable but in PVP I think they are good.
I’d highly recommend starting with the Guardian as a beginner. I just introduced a friend to the game recently and she chose to start with a light armour character. Kept getting mobbed and killed (in GW2 must learn to dodge! ;-P), now she’s created a warrior and is much happier.
The Guardian, will offer you more resilience and survivabililty while you familiarise yourself with the game mechanics. It is – literally – a life saver. Once you’ve gotten used to how the game works and no longer have to worry so much about not getting killed all the time, you can delve into the wonderful world of the Elementalist, which does offer a sea of possibilities – especially once you reach the higher levels. But – you need to know what you’re doing, really work out a strategic build that fits your play style and maximises your skills and traits.
Only way to figure out which you prefer is to just try them out, though. You’ll find out soon enough which works better for you. :-)
If you are interested in wvw blobbing guardian is god tier. Just spam staff 1 and tag everything in sight while being very tanky on the front lines and cleaving everything around you with heals and boons.
