Why s/d? Scepter is a bunker weapon — mainhand dagger will outburst and outdamage against any competent player. Scepter sustained damage is horrible as well.

Because the Air burst is far superior. I prefer D/D, but many use S/D for that specific purpose.
If you want a D/D build simply run 0/15/0/25/30 with Valkyrie/Berserker mix.

How is air burst better than a Burning Speed>Ring of Fire combo with Arcane Wave and Missile? One combo gives me might stacks and hits aoe on top of it all — the other does not. Perhaps air burst can be done more frequently, but it is single target — and if you’re going for single target burst the mesmer and thief provide far better burst.

The Burst in AIR comparatively between the 2 is obviously better for S/D. Some people prefer it because of that and the fact that it can take advantage of the Air X trait.
We’re also not talking about other classes.

get your damage from boons and combos rather than from raw power
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

a full combo with evasice arcana stacks much less might.
The good thing of evasive arcana is cond removal and some heling while in water….not for sure those maximum 3 might you get from earth EA VS 9 with cantrips
Pair that with the fact that cantrip build is easier to connect with more time margin while EA max might stack combo requires you to perform skills with NO time margin at all (means no time for positioning etc that makes the difference).
p.S. Cantrip grant might was also the standard build after ea nerf used by daphoenix and Others (me included)

Well, EA blast finisher can be done every 10 secs while part of a dps rotation and AoE for your party (my might stacks last 36 secs). Cantrips all have around 60+ seconds CD and are mostly defensive. Not everybody likes the idea of popping all your stunbreaks/defensive CD just for a couple might stacks every minute or so.
for that there is another cantrip build i suggest you to look in daphoenix guide…
Reducing cantrips CD they get near to earth CD so the problems is no more.
Remmeber also the 25 water trait while applying defensive auras etc

Sorry, but you are complete and utterly wrong. If daphoenix ever advocated it then he has even less of a clue than I originally thought. It has always been a bad trait.
How can you possibly say you would only get 3 from EA Might stacking? Area Might lasts for 20 seconds (prior to Boon Duration) and you have an attunement swap cooldown of ~10s. If the wiki is right, the Might granted from Spell Slinger lasts 15 seconds. How can you POSSIBLY think it’s better than Evasive Arcana?! I am not even taking into account that you would want to use your Cantrips appropriately as opposed to popping them simply to get Might stacks.
Why would you use the Cantrip CD reduction trait in the first place? The Regen/Vigor one is superior and very rarely would you want to skip Cleansing Wave.

To burst your cantrips for 9 stack of Might (15secs), you most probably can add Lightning Flash, Armor of Earth and Cleansing Flames as part of your Burst rotation.
Problem is you may have to leave Mist Form out and of course the CD for your burst would be at least 36 secs.
Depending on situation and personal preferences, LordBryon and Intigo have their points.

I agree that EA is the better choice but I don’t like dodging. I prefer to just jump in and use fire combo fields + cantrips for 15 might, stability, lightning flash and no conditions on me when I use dagger earth 5 and 2 to stack 9 bleeds with 15 might does a couple thousand damage. If you leave out the might in that burst your damage is pretty much negligible. With boon duration runes and food most of those boons will last for 30ish seconds. Might only 20+ seconds so that’s when you stack some vulnerability and go in for a fiere aura sling at them while you’re waiting for the other cooldowns.
