Josre,

Thanks. I am going to try your build, since you obviously know what you are doing.

What would be most helpful would be to understand the strategy and battle “goals” of the build. How it “works”.

What would be the “base rotation” that one need to get down first, and then start adding to? The base rotation won’t win you any fights and you will eventually die if that is all you have. I realize that.

But it gives you the “automatic reflex” foundation that you need, to build on.

Thanks in advance for the nice build, Josre.

Josre,

This build is working very well for me so far. I find I am very effective at support, and roaming to cap. I doubt if I would have found this combination easily myself. Thanks for helping me have fun and be successful in this game

I vouch for the skills of this fellow elementalist. Plenty of lives have perished by his hand (mine included), and is one of the few to handle the Way of the Staff with such flow and ease.

You have my respect, celestial celtus, even though you could use a bit more….fire, in your armor. Keep up the good work, mr. solo q 3v1.

A very solid staff ele build.
Also, I’m starting a fund to get Celtus better looking armour, regardless of how he feels about dervishes from GW1.

lol .. I was running exactly the same build pre-patch – except celestial amulet (I used berserker or clerics depending on enemy/our setup) and sometimes I took Rock Solid from earth instead of 30P in water to make sure my ER always gets through all ticks and to make stomping a piece of cake. I forgot which runes I used. I think it were the ones which summoned this dog-pet. Despite the the rather defensive build you can even win 1v1s thanks to frostbow.

Signet of Air gives staff the mobility it lacks and it’s also a 30s stunbreak + additional blind which helps when stomping guards, warriors, engis and rangers.

I managed to get into the top100 soloQ (!) with this build and also stayed there until the patch hit. (Afterwards I jumped on the D/D train again )

This is a really solid build, even for soloQ. However, with a coordinated team (especially when using frost-bow!) this build is even more efficient.

If there’s no thief in the enemy team you can have some serious fun with staff (especially when you take zerker-amulett and run a more offensive build) ^^

I started looking for a Staff build after you kicked my butt in a Solo Arena match. Kudos.

Is this just purely a support build? I can’t see you having the damage to kill anyone in this build.

Why in the world do you run signet of air? It’s such a waste of a slot. Armor of Earth is so much better in almost every situation. Not to mention since you have air dodging for spot blinding, you can’t really rely on the active.

Depending on the map, I’ll switch blasting staff for renewing stamina for the vigor procs.

Why in the world do you run signet of air? It’s such a waste of a slot. Armor of Earth is so much better in almost every situation. Not to mention since you have air dodging for spot blinding, you can’t really rely on the active.

  • On-demand instant blind that is not bound to a specific attunement and can be used while chaneling other spells (perfect for stomping)
  • lowest CD stunbreak on ele (and also very low CD compared to stunbreaks on other classes)
  • gives staff the mobility it lacks (best utility in Spirit-Watch since it works when carrying the orb)
  • also deals damage

I’d rather call Armor of Earth a waste of the slot if not traited for reduced CD and regeneration/might on activation.

  • more than twice the CD of Signet of Air
  • only works via boons that can be stripped/corrupted/stolen
  • protection uptime is already good via elemental attunement
  • stability is the only benefit left but that doesn’t justify the 75s CD → Rock Solid is way better when you want stability

Depending on the map, I’ll switch blasting staff for renewing stamina for the vigor procs.

PvP staff without blasting staff? On which maps do you pick renewing stamina and why?

I have to say ‘thank you’ for your great build. I changed some tiny bits but now I feel satisfied with my ele. Only obstacle I have to overcome is the experience how to play him, but I hope I’m ready whenever Anet is going to totaly destroy the mesmer for me in pvp. >.>"

(sorry for my english)
Very interesting. And 5k+ matches its just “wow!”.
Please, tell about heal skill. Why Ether Renewal? I think AB may be not bad (with 2 water fields) or signet (yep, casting staff ele not so fast as dd, but hps will be better). Just Ether Renewal like a big billboard “Interupt me!” (in my opinion).
Its not critic, just question and asks for advice.

Sorry for my english, guys. I try.

Ether Renewal munches up the conditions. If your getting hit hard it won’t heal you much but it will keep your health bar up while its casting. Enough to blow some other heals when its done

I’ve already mentioned it but since ER is basically all you need to deal with conditions you can also put 2P from water into earth for Rock Solid. Then you won’t have to worry about being interrupted anymore ^^

I run armor of earth over signet of air simply because I haven’t been caught with my pants down in CC for a long time. What kills me more than anything now isn’t chain stuns like it use to be but immobilize spam. People are getting smarter(espeically at our level of ladder) to know to save stuns/dazes to interrupt ether renewal. Not running armor of earth or rock solid to cover it won’t give you any staying power and staff can’t immediately exit a fight like D/D can.

I play with clerics however as I only need to help escort map objects(like assist with svanir, take out a treb, escort orb) or go from home to mid and back, really. I let people with actual mobility and not pretend mobility like 25% movement speed(with air 4((same CD for swiftness, it’ll be back up for immob worries)) and fire 4((180, 4)) I get to anywhere I want to be before swiftness really runs out) rotate more effectively than me(unless I’m d/d).

Armor of Earth just has more universal utility to me. You can use it to cover renewal. You can use it to secure stomps against any class(air, tumble, stomp. It’s been that easy since launch, now you have rock solid to cover you anyway without -needing- to pop armor of earth). You can use it to secure resses. You can use it to secure important channels of icebow 4, 5, meteor storm.

Movement speed signets have always been super wasteful to me, even in WvW, where you can have permanent swiftness without it anyway. I don’t need the movement speed that critically to do my job as a staff ele(clerics). You do seem to be trying to run a more DPS oriented staff ele though, so maybe you are trying to out rotate people with real mobility(and being successful obviously). It’s just not for me and never will be.

And I run both armor of earth and rock solid. It’s just too good in my eyes. Unless I need staying power mid against conditions, then I go 0/0/2/6/6 cantrips give regen/vigor with cleansing wave/ runes of dwayna.

I think Forest may be the only map I don’t run blasting staff on. The smaller static and meteor storm seem to be more effective when I’m doing my rotations. Otherwise a misplaced static is more consequential with blasting staff as they have plenty of room to just stay.. inside of it. Healing Rain/ Geyser/ Eruption and all that are big enough otherwise. Henge and Keep are set up so you don’t need all the extra range with staff, and with Mine, you just play the LoS game like everyone else does, or as a cleric ele, they are forced to train you and stand in your stuff anyway.

Personal opinions, end the end, I suppose.

I tried using this build and found that I couldnt do enough damage to ever kill anyone, not was my support enough to compensate for being a class that does it better. I hope I’m just playing it wrong.
