want to run a staff build
First of all, bare in mind that staff is a support build first and foremost. That doesn’t mean you can’t spec full damage but if you want to do the most damage you can, go dagger/dagger.
I run staff ele, my traits are 0/20/10/20/20. I’m playing support so balance between power and vitality is key for me; I can effectively watch over my allies without worrying too much about losing HP whilst I’m healing or controlling. However, you could go all out power or healing depending on how you want to play. If you want to stand at the back and nuke everything go full berserker set and put 30 points into fire traits, for example.
In terms of traits, choose what you think you’ll benefit from most, but [Blasting staff] (larger staff AoE, 20 pts in Arcana) is a must.
All I can say beyond that is experiment and have fun. If you do spec damage (power/precision/critical damage) and you find your ele is a bit too squishy, don’t be afraid to sacrifice some damage for vitality or toughness and see how you get along.
I hope this helps, and enjoy your staff ele.

I use staff exclusively in Dungeons. These are the builds I use:
30/30/0/0/10 Glass Cannon Dungeon Staff
Variations include 20/30/0/0/20, 30/20/0/0/20, etc.
10/10/30/0/20 Condition Dungeon Staff
Variations include 20/0/30/0/20, 20/0/30/10/10, etc.
Personally I prefer a staff condition build in dungeons because it is less squishy and brings a lot to a dungeon party but I think both are fun. AOE Eruptions that Bleed for 13.8k a cast and Burning for 10.5k with Signet or Fire taken together for 3.3k condition damage per second is very nice. Not so nice with other bleed stackers but synergizes very well with guardians and other staff ele builds that put down fields (like the glass cannon build). Can also stack up to 30 seconds of Weakness with Earth 1.

what. A staff build without blasting staff? madness.
30/20/0/0/20 all day
full berserker’s
glass it up, and never die in PvE because you’re an elementalist
I like blasting staff but if maxing dps is my goal I prefer 30 in Air and Fire for max power/crit/crit damage and trait Arcane for 16 sec CD Arcane Blast spam.
but you do 0 damage if your attack doesn’t hit. That trait is important. no way I would ever use staff without it
additional attunement swapping and boon duration helps a bit with damage anyway
not every staff attack is an aoe.
Enduring Support/Combat Healer
All Cleric armor each with a Superior Rune of Dwayna
All Saphire Jewelry
Cleric Staff with Superior Sigil of Water
Point is to not die… Heal yourself, heal others, heal often and support the team as much as possible.
Very easy to solo PvE. I don’t PvP or WvW enough to give an extensive information on either.
Here, this is a little more useful than any of the crap I’ve seen on here. Munchkins don’t do well in this game, you can’t be full support/damage/or tank. The build I put up there is a nice combination of everything.
For gear use 5 superior fire runes and one Balthazar rune. You want the AC armor with power/tough/vit, and try to get accessories with the same. They come out of WvW so it might be a little tough to get, but it’s worth it.
You’ll want a superior sigil of battle on your staff.
The use of the build is pretty simple, stack the kitten out of might, break 3500 power, and blow kittens up while being completely unkillable because of how much hp and toughness you have and your cantrips. You’ll want to combo field off your lava font/burning retreat + eruption for maximum effectiveness. You can easily stack 25 might on yourself in combat and just blow stuff away. You can’t do much damage if you’re dead, nor are you helping your party if they have to res you every 10 seconds. Enjoy owning everything in PVE.
Oh if you’re a human you might wanna use prayer to Dwayna, it does more healing over time.
(calculations done with 200 healing power)
Glyph of elemental power | Prayer to dwayna
5,044/25 | 6690/30
151320/750 | 167250/750

Blasting staff is imo the one of the most overrated traits for ele. It seriously isn´t that hard to keep mobs in lavafonts if you just practice a bit. I never equip blasting staff, i feel it´s more than often just not needed and takes space from better traits.
I run 0/0/10/30/30 support staff build for group pve.

I like blasting staff because I don’t have to focus as much on accuracy, but yeah, once you get used to where to place your circles blasting staff isn’t needed as much.
Blasting staff makes it MUCH easier for your party to use combo fields, that’s it’s actual use.
