In my honest opinion Enginer class is crippled.

To say out blunt. But to go in detail lets see why i say that :

1, Enginer only has 2 main weapons basically ( shield can not be counted to it its not a weapon its more of utility).

2, To make up for that, you have to use Kit’s. That take up your Utility slots, that are suposed to be made for utility and to make up for the lack of weapons you can use.
-To be blunt : You chop of your left arm to use it as a left?

3, Besides using kits waste up your potential utility, the most of the Enginer skills are the same (not excluding kits or alternative weapons)
-They are all : Throw and aoe (with a side condition or boon). Shoot to Cone AOE. Or simply shoot.
-Utility has no real utility, they mostly give boons or knock back, or make the tipical rocket jump. The only signitficantly interesting and special skills are the Turret skills.

I think thats the case why most players get bored with the class asap. Or araund lv 40-50 ish.
Or the reson why so few play it at all.

This is not really an issue only a personal idea, but i think : Giving options to reskin ( or options to unlock them) weapons used when using a kit should be given.
-Devs remember, Enginers use kit weapons mostly, unlike the most classes, and they cant pick a new look for those weapons by simply equipping or reskinning them, like in most cases. And thats another reson the class is in a bit disadventage
-Personally i would also make a lot more skins for Turrets to.

So not sure who thinks what of all these, bit this is what i can make out of this whole class, anytime i think abaut it.
Exuse my bad english. Pls do make comments.

If you want evidence that engineers are crippled, its not a very hard task to find evidence for.

Kits don’t use sigils and weapon stats.

I do not want to come across sounding like an engi fanboy, but here is why I love my engineer. Please allow me to use your points:

1. Yes we only have 2 weapons, but like you say later, we have weapon kits, making our class the only one able to potentially switch between 4 different weapons in combat, and each of the utility slots give you a bonus toolbelt ability that is dependent on your weapon kit. This gives us a lot options in combat. The only other class that comes close to this is the Elementalist.

2. Like I said above, you are not really giving up utility as each kit gives you a toolbelt (F2-F4) ability. Every time you choose a utility, you get 2 abilities instead of one like other classes.

3. Can this not be said of every class? When you break it down to basics like that, every class as a range shoot ability, a range aoe ability, some aoe support boon or heal, etc.

As for our utility skills, I would argue that our kits give us the utility within the abilities you gain by equipping them. For example, the “Air Blast” skill from the Flamethrower gives the same type of utility as the “Kick” or “Stomp” ability from the Warrior profession. Within the same kit, you also have a wall of fire and AOE blind. Not to mention gaining the ability to add massive Burn buff to your next outgoing attack. All this with 1 utility slot.

In closing, this class is obviously not for everyone and it takes a while to get used to it, and even longer to master. And even if you do get used to it, it might still not be your thing. This class offers a mix of utility, support and dps that is a lot to take in, but when played right is very powerful.

To each his own I guess. I personally love it and constantly experiments with new ways to play it and keep it fresh.

Reality is a matter of perspective

I have to admit you made a good point, but that actually saddens me a lot more.

Why?
“Can this not be said of every class? When you break it down to basics like that, every class as a range shoot ability, a range aoe ability, some aoe support boon or heal, etc.”

Only proves that classes are not only alike, but almost exakittenhe same.

I also have to agree with the fact, Playing Enginer needs a LOT of practice, becouse skills cant be seen trough in 1 shot. It only makes the class unnededly complicated. (when its not)
But i have to add, i personally found the class a bit boring ( dont take me wrong, ranger even more) becouse all i did (no matter what kits or weapons i used) kite araund and nuke. Its fine in Pve, but i had to do the same in PvP to. That what dissapointed me in the most.

I totally agree with the rest and its is a decent class if you put it that way, but the problem of Kits weapons cant be reskinned. I presume a LOT of players that get bored with the class are partly irritated by the fact they cant switch the look of there weapons ( kits)
You cant basically change the look of the weapons you use in 70% of the game (later on , as you play more this % gets a LOT more). Not by equipping a new one, or obtaining a cool one.

Once again I ask are we talking the same language I use a rifle and gadgets. Since in PVE I often kitten off the bosses with 4 people wailing on it so it comes after me I must be doing much more agro then the others so the mobs have to come after me but I have no numerical data to prove this. In WWW I kill more then I die. My last time out I died 2 times and did 10 clean kills (by myself) and racked up another 32 kills on my achievements. I win more of my 1v1 fights and can stay alive long enough in the 1v2 and 3 for help to arrive. The only thing I have not done is sPVP, so maybe this is what you mean when you say we are crippled.

1. First off we have 3 weapons. here is my reasoning. rifle has 4 damage skill and 1 crowd control skill. duel pistol has 4 damage skills and 1 crowd control skill, pistol and shield 4 damage skills and 1 crowd control skill. So why do you not consider the shield a weapon? it work the same as any other weapon set we have 4 damage 1 Crowd Control.

2. You can use kits and I love seeing the Eng that know how to use them . I am average with kits I am better with gadgets. Where we shine is where most classes cannot. We can change what wee do based on the situation. For example I was on a dungeon run we need for more direct damage out there. So I change to grenades and drop turrets. Next we need more support for our melee guys. So I change to elixirs and elixir gun. As an Eng I can change to meet the needs of the challenge

3. ok this one threw me. all classes are like this. For example Guardian. swing smash the ground, lead and swing give some type boon/protection. That pretty much sums up that class.

I was having a tough time around 30 with the class but then I really took a long look at it in the mist and discover a single skill my be average but when creatively combined with another that same skill can rock. For example cloaking device and rocket boots. I love getting immobilized then hitting the rocket boots if I see him still coming at me I cripple him and pop a speed potion. Now I am back in control of the fight and by then my net shot is up again.

Are there problems, sure but we are far from a crippled class.

Well off to work have a great day

I love our Kits. No other profession can switch between 5 different weapon sets with absolutely no cooldown. Sure, they can be bumped in damage just a bit, mostly the Flamethrower and the Bomb Kit; and yes, they are giving us sigils soon, but that isn’t a reason not to enjoy the flavor of the class.

I really enjoy the CC of Engineer. That’s my favorite part. You think Mesmers could shutdown players in GW1? That job now falls to the Engineer. A rifle build with PBR/Slick Shoes/Flamethrower has an endless amount of CC.

Engineers are functionally fine right now. Our Utilities are in a good place but I do feel that a few need improvements, notably the Gadgets and Turrets. But it’s nothing that is making our profession UNPLAYABLE.

Also I love the turrets can be on the other side of an event while your turrets kill on the other side= MORE LOOT!

well, i dont really care, im usually 80% of time in pvp, and i dont run turret build, just use the net turret, and i think it looks fine, but if u want…why not i guess

also, ill add, i think you(anet) nerfed engineers too bad, i mean, every single time i find a build capable of pvping, oh its op, lets nerf it
cough cough
removing res from elixir gun(i mean, that was a lil op, but you should have increased cd instead of removing it)
removing cc from flamethrower and stability.(and now we have a completely useless kit)
vigor/boons from toolkit(that is an useless kit now, bcuz the only use it had was gaining boons when swithching to it)
overall, i think the engi got way too nerfed and thats the main reason why ppl dont play it, fortunately 4 u, im too hooked to it and love challenges too much to change to another class, but man, no matter, i found yet another build to kick kitten in spvp.^^

The only things crippling the class are bugs and broken skills/traits/abilities that do not function properly or at all.

Anything beyond that is generally in someones head. Especially after reading all of the post and threads of folks trying to convince the devs to mold the class to fit their play style, while not caring hoe it would negatively effect the rest of us.

For example, take the OPs back words outlook. He is claiming the gave kits to the class to compensate for only having 3 weapons choices and no weapons swaps.

When everyone knows the give us no weapons swaps because we have the kits as options, not the other way around.

Poor craftsman blame their tools. Poor players blame their Engineer.

People generally give up on Engineer because they had a different expectation of what an Engineer is. I feel most people had this presupposed assumption that Engineer’s focus is to put down strong turrets to do all their jobs. And gave up when didnt find the class meets their expectation.

It cannot be emphasized enough that Engineer’s class mechanics – the toolbelt – is what makes an Engineer shines. Despite certain skills performing the same function, you get to have 2 same function with 2 separate cooldown timers on one skill pick. I get 2 condition removal on 2 separate cooldown timers, or 2 readily deployable nets with the net turret (3 if you include the overcharged).
Or, I can have 2 different function with 1 single skill – a condition removal with aoe revival potion and an endurance refiller with stun breaker. An aoe stealth or stability potion and a 4 sec invulnerability.
The “take up utility slot” argument only works if you are not playing your Engineer right.

And weapon kits – it doesn’t carry stats of your weapon, but it does has stats of its own. Meaning, even if you are still using a level 1 weapon at level 80, you will have the level 80 stats of the weapon kit. No need to hassle about getting an exotic weapon …. yet.
But the true shine about weapon kit is the virtually zero cooldown swap. If you are not utilizing this enough, you are not playing your weapon kit Engineer right.

The OP isn’t about problems with the class that other players universally agree about, but rather about disliking core mechanics of the class and therefor the person you quoted made a sound advice. It’s not about problems or bugs but about disliking, so why play a class you don’t like?

There is something that bugs me about engineer weapons / kits. All the kits are made to be used MID RANGE (except tool kit and bomb kit).

That being said, we have no real reason to swap between a multitude of kits. I played mesmer for a while. I used greatsword and sword/focus. At long range, greatsword was great (lol). When they got close, I could swap to sword.

As an engineer, I rarely feel the need to swap besides to activate a combo field. Engineers have no shortage of “distancing” skills. Rifle overcharge, flamethrower push, battering ram, rocket boots, elixer gun.. thing. That’s 5 right there, and you can have 3 of them AT ANY GIVEN TIME. I just feel like so many of the weapons and gadgets are so similar that there’s no real need to swap to another kit besides cooldowns.

Exceptions: Grenade kit – I’ll swap to this if I need to lay down some AoE .. but honestly, the flamethrower covers almost as much area.
Bomb kit – This is the most boring kit ever. Run away and drop bombs, kiting dumb enemies into them. They took the grenade kit, removed the area targeting and made it drop at your feet. Boring.
Tool Kit – Now I actually like this kit. Why? It’s really the only weapon kit we have that actually offers a different kind of playstyle – melee. It’s usefulness in healing turrets isn’t fantastic.. maybe if it got a little more attention, this would absolutely be my favorite kit.

I shelved my mes, war and necro because of the engineer. I love the the different roles it affords me, I love that I can change how my class plays by just switching kits, and most of all I love my self rez, lol. I’m able to stack conditions with the best of them, while being able to res teammates quickly, or being able to perform various types of cc, all in one build. I suppose it could be a playstyle issue, but unless you’re just looking for a 2 button win class, I don’t see how the Engineer can’t satisfy everyone.

I find engineer superior to the other class in general gameplay, because my kits dont incure a cooldown when i switch between them and my weapon, so when i switch to grenade kit i can immediatly go back to rifle and then to med kit

And since engineers have such solid traits that syngerize really well with kits and your toolbelt abilities i dont feel like we are missing abilities, if feel like engineer has actualyl mroe flexability that most other classes thanks to having basically twice as many skills and no cooldown on weapons swap/kit swaps

I’ve got an Engineer up to just about 80, and I’m still not bored with the class.

Of course, being a Turret Engineer, I’m not going to get bored looking at the same old crazy-looking backpack of weirdness for forty levels – instead, I’m going to get disappointed every patch, when they leave the buggy traits buggy (one works precisely 30% of the way outside of a particular bit of PvP, it’s hard to tell if another works properly because the tooltips don’t work and turret behavior is unchanged, and as far as I know, turret explosions don’t trigger Explosives traits), and frown when my turrets get obliterated because they don’t scale to anything but my level.
