The pistol is a deceptively good weapon. It does minor to moderate up-front damage, but it also stacks bleeds and poisons and blinds. Using a pistol and a shield will let you play defensive while you whittle your enemy down this way, while using two pistols will up your damage a bit more at the expense of utility. Grenades are actually similar to pistols – moderate up-front damage, solid bleeds and debilitation. If you like these two weapons, I would recommend looking up a condition damage build guide.
If you want a build that uses mainly rifle or pistol, there are a few of those as well. There’s toolbelt burst builds that do comically high burst damage at the expense of being easily countered and killed(think five-minute mages from WoW), and there are builds that focus on chugging potions and unloading pistols with conditions. Obviously, turret builds require you to spend a lot of time with your default weapons as well.
If you’re only in it for the guns, there are also dual-pistol rogues and rifle warriors, if you’re interested.
As for your WvW server, it should eventually get to the point where it is being matched with other similarly low rated worlds, so it will be even. If you really want to go find a higher WvW-rated server, I guess there’s nothing stopping you.
Thanks for the response!
Just from reading around the forums I am interested in condition builds. I’ll have to look into them more.
As for servers, going to stick it out. I’ll re-evaluate at 80. I’m not looking to switch to a server that dominates at WvW, just don’t want to be stuck on a low pop server that never can win due because of that.

I wouldn’t go conditions builds till later on, since condition builds rely on traits and on utilities more than anything else.
I would go for the rifle, and go for power gear to do direct damage.
Plus, the grenade kit and bomb kit benefit more from power, than condition damage, so if you want to go guns and explosives, the rifle is a better bet.
Pistol is rather weak honestly.
Levels 1-5ish I was using my pistol a lot. Now I feel like it’s more of a stat stick.
Note, you don’t get stats from your weapons while kits are out, so it’s really just a stick.

Pistol shines in condition builds. As others already pointed out, those builds need their traits to really work, so they are not too strong in the lower levels. On the other hand, in the lower levels anything goes, so it’s up to your personal preference, really.
Rifle and grenades complement each other better, as they both scale with power nicely and give you tools for single target/AoE respectively.
As to your server’s success in WvW – it’s a numbers game, nothing more. If a server continually (especially at night times) has more dedicated players queueing for WvW than its opponents, it wins. There is literally no skill involved. Don’t fret, it’ll get sorted out by the server matchmaking, pitching the server populations with similar activity against each other. It doesn’t change anything for you personally, whether you’re on server X or Y.
Thank you for all the replies. I have much to learn as an Engineer and also need to find my niche when it comes to play style. If anyone has any good Engineer resources that aren’t already stickied I’d greatly appreciate it!

This made me laugh because it is so true
I use a rifle/gadget build and do alright in WvWvW. I tend to kill more than I die. Eng in combat feels like a dance to me. you have to know when to “dip” your partner and when you spin metaphorically speaking.
As for me and grenades. I suck at them but that is ok. Also things change a bit as you get up to 80. and gear can make a big difference. I was doing 500-800 dmg on Friday. Spent the weekend getting bettering gear now I can pull 1000-2000. I love it when I get everything lined up and I can do 4000-5000 in about 3 seconds. I am not sure if that is good or not but I like it. Still working on getting legendary gear though.
