Hey all! I just started a new character, decided to go with an Engineer. Yay!

But I’m having difficulty with the class. It plays so differently from my main (Guardian), and I was hoping some more seasoned players would be able to give me some tips/tricks so that I may better play the class.

  • While you’re leveling I recommend you use Healing Turret, besides a heal, when you detonate, it will deal a considerable amount of dmg and will be one of you hardest hitting skills at lower levels.
  • Try gettin Grande/Bomb Kit for offensive, they hit hard as well as providing both straight & condi dmg.
  • For mobility, we have a trait called “Speedy kits” under tools, which allows us to keep perma swiftness.
  • Unlike guardian, Engineers can be fairly squishy so get used to dodging more often and being a mid-range fighter and not in their faces! use CCs in order to control mobs

Can’t think of anything else right now, but if you want to know about a specific situation or something, please post.

  1. Learn to dodge. That’s right, really learn to dodge. Why? Because the engineer is so squishy compared to the Warrior (far less blocks and worse armor) and the Ranger (no pet to draw off agro) that avoiding damage in combat is an essential Eng skill.
  2. Learn to use kits a lot. Eng’s weapons are nerfed because we get a lot of our effectiveness from our kit skills – so much so that most Engs probaly spend more time in kits than out of them (the exception would be the Pistol/Elixir Eng, and even then they make liberal use of the Tool Kit). As part of this, master kit/weapon switching and chaining skills from different kits/weapons for greater effect.
  3. Master the grenade kit – it’s our most effective kit in all zones (PvP, WvW, PvE).
  4. Master the Tool Kit – it’s our best 1v1 kit.
  5. Try out a Pistol/Elixir/condition build.
  6. Try out all the other Eng kits and weapons.
  7. Once you’ve done all of the above, decide which combination you most enjoy and build around that.

Levelling is your opportunity to learn the different abilities available to the Eng. You need to do this because Engs’ aren’t strong enough to have a single build that covers most situations. Instead, expect to have to keep changing your builds around to stay viable. (If you don’t learn our abilities while leveling, you’ll end up like me, having to go back as a L80 and spend time learning things I should just tried earlier).

Well when I try out a new character, I always go to the mists as soon as I can so I can find a build I like. Try out builds there and I wish you luck

Start with pistol/pistol, conditions are very powerful in the early levels. For the rifle to be useful you need lot’s of +power stats.

80’s: Engineer/Warrior/Necromancer/Mesmer/Thief/Elementalist/Guardian [Seafarer’s Rest]
