I really haven’t found much use for it, it seems a tad weak and clumsy, but that 5 ability is nice, as is the heal for ally support.

I did have a run-in on an event where everyone kept getting fear spammed, so I set up next to the jerk and the stability kept me in place to actually deal damage.

The thing is, I just can’t really see where Mortar would shine. I tried bombarding large groups of mobs on some of the PvE events with tons of invaders, launching from up on a hill, but just getting into the thick of it with a bomb kit, or using grenades from a distance seems more effective.

In most cases, the act of even placing the mortar will draw aggro from 20 enemies, they’ll drop what they’re doing and close in on you, getting within your minimum range.

As for WvW, most players just dodge out of anything you shoot their way, the shots are extremely predictable and slow to reach their destination.

That’s exactly why they are reworking the mortar into a mobile kit.

Seems you answered your own question. I saw a video of a dude using it in spvp nicely but in no way do I think it compares to supply kit.

I tried using it in WvW at one point early on. It would have been okay if it didn’t get outranged by grenades. In its current form it should probably have a base range of 2000, not 1400. It really is quite useless except for something to hold onto when stability is required. Even in PvP it requires you to be off point by a good bit, so you’re not helping capture, which could be an issue.

CoF P3 Boss fight.

You can use the 100% Stab uptime to camp wherever you like on the platform and drop ice fields to hinder his mobility while the party kites him around.

It’s pretty much the only boss fight I can think of where you have enough space where you can actually range the boss from outside the minimum range, the stability is actually useful (Since his main strategy is to try pushing everyone into the lava) , and he doesn’t spawn adds or spam AOES that render the mortar useless by forcing you to leave it.

Haven’t tried it, but maybe it might work well for Claw Of Jormag’s Ice wall since the stability will prevent his chain fears, if you still have the range to hit the wall with the mortar.

But in both cases, you’ll STILL do better damage just using bombs or grenades, that’s really what kills the thing the most. How is it elite if it’s out-DPSed by standard kits? Camping the thing just cripples you.

The new one should be great though because you can swap to it and toss a few shells before swapping back to your main kit and it will be far less of a waste to do so.

What I don’t understand is what down sides will come with an elite kit, I mean, will the skills on it take a long time to cool down? will it have a long cooldown on swapping it?

From what I saw they might not even be increasing the range, just lowering the range of grenades to 900…

I used it to good effect during the Marionette event during the lane defense. Large, long lasting chill / cripple fields to slow down all the enemies came in handy.

Useful during Vinewrath for pretty much the same reasons, although arrow carts do it better. The extra healing can be handy for the carriers at least, though.
