With the least amount of kits as possible.

I just want to try something new. I have lots of button mashing with staff ele, so I want to try a rifle-focused engi with emphasis on crit damage, mostly utilizing Hip Shot

But I just can’t get it right myself.

Need help on playstyle, which kit to use, what elixir to get, etc etc.

I usually run Elixir B+ U for extra crit chance and machine gun shots, and I bring Grenade kit. I’ve got FT Bomb and Nades available as kits right now.

I won’t be bringing this engi to WvW. This one is for PvE material

Yes, I have the perfect thing for you. This is “almost” what I settled with. High damage and a fair range. I tested this build with great success in dungeons and WvW. The secret is the static discharge released when using a tool belt skill. That will bounce though three enemies. So let’s resume. You have to equip a Kit but you won’t use it whatsoever. A total of 7 projectiles that will crush the enemy.

FIREARMS: 30 Points with: IV, VI, IX
ALCHEMY: 10 Points with: VI
TOOLS: 30 Points with: II, VI, VIII
*You may notice that this increases critical damage and reduces tool belt skills recharge.

So equip the following: Rifle Turret, Tool kit and Utility Googles. Why? Because they will add the following to your toolbelt:

- Surprise shot
- Throw Wrench
- Analyze

Using those traits, each of these will also hit the foes with the discharge bolt.

Hints:
- Use whatever healing you are used to, I recommend the healing turret
- You will use the tool belt skills constantly you may want to bind them on the keys: Q,E,R,C (in stead of F1, F2, F3, F4) but this is a matter of preference.
- You won’t have great condition removers but your range from the monsters will compensate.

PPS: why won’t you bring this engi in WvW? Others mage the ground tremble with this build. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgEyg769cDc

Chiming in here because I have no experience with the rifle so something like this might get me into it.

The basis behind damage dealing is simply to autoattack and spam your toolbelt skills on CD? Toolkit has some nice utility (shield, cripple) so that’s a help. Do you never drop rifle turret, just bring it for the low CD belt skill?

No, there is much more than just spamming TB skills. I didn’t mention that the engineer’s source of speed on this build comes from constantly swapping kits. “speedy Kits” allows us to gain 5 seconds of swiftness every time we swap. This way we have endless speed. For some it is annoying but I love it. Saves a slot (which other classes waste on signets just to get the 25% speed.)

The Utility googles are used to break out of stun, gaining fury and immunity to blindness. This is very important when escaping or engaging enemies. The tool skill that comes with applies 10 freaking stacks of vulnerability for 8 seconds. This is humongous and should be the starting skill of any engagement.

Then we have the Toolkit. This is where all the fun begins. We have the Smack which does damage better than a knights one handed sword and also repairs turrets (if the healing turret is used). Dropping the box of nails will cripple enemies that pass through it, this is also used to escape. A Pry Bar hit to the face will apply 5 confusion to your foe. The Gear Shield will block any attacks for 3 seconds and the magnet is the best of the best: pulls foes near you. This way you can take a a monster and separate it from the group (works best in WvW with other players).

The Rotations

I have 2 rotations in mind, two different attacks (although you are free to explore and exploit the combo fields if there are any).

1) Net shot + Jump Shot on immobilisers target + Blunderbuss + Overcharged Shot + all the toolbelt skills to release the static discharge and then continue the rifle fire. You can do it by shooting the vulnerability first if you like.

2) Magnet pull your foe + Pry Bar to the face, [Switch to rifle] hit Blunderbuss + Overcharged Shot +Jump Shot.

As I said, this works best with berserker. Think about you have 3 discharges that bounces in 3 different targets, if each hits over 2000 damage per hit that means over 18.000 total damage (without the rifle that’s already shooting).

Please try it and give some feedback. i’d also like to hear opinions on how to make the better of this.

Never thought of things like that! I’ve been fixated on Elixir B too much I think.

I currently use Elixir H because I found Healing Turret to be unreliable during dynamic fights, where enemies might suddenly find great interest in whacking the turret, but let’s see if I can adapt with that.

As for the Alchemy trait, why use Protection Injection instead of Invigorating Speed? Not saying you’re wrong, just wanna hear the reasoning

I’ve never tried Tool Kit, I might want to try that. Is the Power Wrench ground targeted attack or is it targeted attack like Surprise Shot?

Seems balanced, with a Stun Breaker that also gives me fury. The combination of Speedy Kit and Tool Kit is an escape combo that can help me out of sticky stuff.

Will need to quickly level my Engineer to max =D

That’s what I love about the engineer. You can always recreate yourself. And making theory-crafting on this forum you learn new things every time.

It is a personal preference. What you are saying is totally viable. You can even choose the elixirs cool down reduction on Alchemy if you use Elixir H. The base of the build is the Firearms and Tools. The last 10 points are up to you.

Raestloz.7134

It’s not ground targeted. If you don’t have a target it will fire in front of you hitting any foes. It also repairs turrets (just like smack/twack/etc). The good thing is that you can hit all 3 toolbelt skills in less than 1 second while continuing to fire your rifle.

This is true. It also works well in PVP and WvW if you get used to it.

It freaking works!

With my usual Elixir combo, it takes quite some time to kill a target. Yesterday night, I engaged a Veteran Harathi Commander, and bringing his health down is quite a task

Just now, I tried to fight the same target again, and somehow, things feel easier.

See, this is why I like forums

I’m glad to hear it already works for you! Once you reach 80 and using a Pow + Prec + Crit gear, spamming static discharges on group of centaurs will turn them into ashes.

Yeah, with Elixir Combo, I seem to miss something. Namely, I just chug down to elixirs and stand there with no real interaction. The 3 toss elixirs are all aimed at me, so it went down as “chug down elixirs, activate auto-attacks, sit back and watch”. Well, not really sit back and watch, but during the whole machine gun ordeal, things feel a bit empty, especially since they all have long cooldowns so I don’t press anything at all.

With this combination, in every engagement I always have something to press, Surprise Shot in CD? pull out the turret. Turret explodes? Surprise Shot finished CD. Surprise Shot finished? Everything else in cooldown? Pull Out Tool Kit and start trolling with confusing pry bar.

Yeah, now I enjoy my engi. Thanks much!

In my honest opinion I found the toolkit to be a bit too “meh” to be worth a slot and prefer having the battering ram.

The toolbelt is almost as fast to recharge but also a huge amount of normal damage. It also gives an extra fast knockback.
Also, I found putting 10 poitns into explosives rather than inventions worked better for the burning for 4s trait and an extra 100 power.

Full berserker gear with rubies complements this build greatly and enabling you to deal heaps more damage, and in wvw, can hit up to 4K dmg alone by just using the rams toolbelt skill.
I can assure you that the static discharge build with my traits and utilities+toolbelt skills will do MORE damage than a nade build.

Hmmm… Sure, you can swap the Tool Kit with a Gadget if the tool-belt skill launches at foes and releasing a SD. But then you need A KIT in order to gain Swiftness (With Speedy Kits). Speed is very important and that’s why toolkit remains a good choice in the SD build.

I’m sure the battering ram owns in WvW since you have two extra range attacks. Maybe your build has more differences? If so, I’d like to see it but please post it on a different thread.

Actually, toolkit vastly outperforms battering ram in any possible way.

Ram does slightly higher damage but it only hits one target,
Throw wrench not only hits anything in its way, but it does it TWICE since it deals damage also in the returning phase, in addiction it has shorter recharge.
The kit itself also gives:
Pry bar, which has a very short cd, deals huge damage and also apply 5 confusion stacks.
Magnet pull, which is one of the best control skills ingame since it has a ridicolous range and can be combined with prybar+ blunderbluss for high burst, or overcharged shot for a control nightmare.
Gear shield, which is a 3 sec block on a 16 cd, lifesaver.
Box of nails, which even if it’s pretty tricky and not really that great, it will still cripple following enemies.
Smack, which is gold against reflect projectile enemies, allowing you to still do high damage on em, also hits very hard with mesmer’s time warp.

I don’t see any possible scenario in which all this is outperformed by a 45 seconds melee range knockback.

You can however consider to use both in pve, and remove googles which, given its very long recharge, may not be the best option if you don’t plan to use the stunbreaker + analize for the burst combo (which is mostly for pvp).

I’ve been playing engie since I got the game, but mostly in PVE with my own “build” and once I got to 80 I quickly lost interest once I started on a guardian. I tried your build out and I absolutely love it. It really makes him fun to play again.

What armor/weapons would you recommend for it? I’m currently wearing stuff spec’d for condition damage mostly with the COF armor, but that doesn’t seem to apply to this build as much.

Congrats! I think most engineers were disappointing initially and tried other classes. But none is so geeky and fun. In terms of armor It is a good thing you play COF since you can get the Berserker set. So, go with full Berserker Gear + Ruby orbs. Before you buy the orbs from Trading Post, you can check your collectibles to see if you stored any along the way.

Rings: Ruby Orichalcum Ring of the Berserker

  • Ascended rings can also be purchased from a laurel vendor or obtain from Fractals once you reach level 10

Earrings: Ruby Orichalcum Earring of the Berserker

  • Or can be obtained by completing guild missions

Amulet I use This one. I got it for 30 laurels.

In terms of weapons I recommend the Rifle. You can also get it from COF dungeon weapon. Just get the exotic berserker one. If you keep farming cof leave the original sigil since it enhances damage vs Flame Legion. If you go all round style you can try Superior Sigil of Force. It adds +5% damage.

PS: remember if you feel too squishy get a little bit of toughness on one of your gear. Sorrow’s Embrace dungeon for example gives Toughness-Power-Precision. It still has the important attributes for this build so It will blend very well.

good luck

Ah, I didnt know that the toolkit did damage on return also. So technically it does more damage anyway.
And for the speedy kits I use medkit. It is by far in my opinion the best medical slot item to use since you have the toolbelt heal for almost as much as Elixir H and also 3 bandages to help escape with

This sounds like a fun build and something very similar to the build I created during the time I planned on making a rifle engineer (still do, but need more time to craft predator). The only thing is that you are super squishy and are out-ranged by a number of classes/ mobs (which is not such a big problem unless you plan on running dungeons and can’t dodge or WvW). For stun breaker I really enjoy using elixir R (I know people don’t like it, but it’s great), as not only will it allow you to dodge 2 extra times (personally this is one of the best stun-breakers in the game for me), but it’s tool skill is invaluable as if you time it right, you can drop it right before being downed and get back up again before the enemies can finish you off (however this only works if you are not being damaged so usually 1vs1 or possibly 1vs2), which is great and usually surprises the enemies (then you can use rifle 4 followed by 2 to immobilize your enemy and get a few extra hits on him). That’s just my preference, but I really do feel like you need more defense since berserk gear and a lack of toughness/vitality in traits can really hurt your survivability and thus overall potential.
