Apothecary or Rabid for WvW?
Stick with Rabid.
Firstly, Apothecary is very expensive, if you want to go all out be prepared to spend 100g+. I’m not sure how your play-style is but you’ll also be losing condition damage in favor of healing power. Rabid is also the best set for grenades in a condition damage set-up as you can proc extra stacks of vulnerability and bleeds. It also has bad synergy with the Inventions trait line, which converts toughness and healing power into power.
If you planned on spreading yourself thin from the beginning, then Apothecary might be good as it boosts the overall low base stats of both Healing Power and Condition damage. Honestly though, healing power just isn’t powerful enough to justify investing heavily into it. If you’re ikittenerg chances are people are popping off water-fields left in right as well, which heal for more.
I guess you are right. Also you still have to consider direct damage for the pistol/shield and kit skills. Pistol autoattack direct dmg – as low as it may be – will still hit for some nice AoE with this bit of precision and the 10+ might stacks that are also common in elixir builds.
I gues Apothecary really is a niche item that as you said will cost quite a lot. And still for 80% of condition builds Rabid will be the better offer.
May I ask what Ascended Amulet you bought for your condition engis?
I’d go for a combination. Rabid is only available as a trinket. If you go both, you’ll get precision and condition damage (which is a condition eng’s bread and butter) as well as some toughness and healing.
I currently use Apothecary Armor and pistols, and use Rabid Trinkets.
True, Apothecary isn’t cheap, but I also invested in rares to start, which range between 40-70s a piece in my server’s market.

As for the topic I’m sporting a mix between carrion and rampager trinkets with PvT gear for WvW. (Using bombs and pistol/shield)

I’m curious—and condition builds are a bit of a blind spot for me—why is there no mention of Rampager gear?
I can understand why Carrion isn’t mentioned, as it has no Precision. I get that. But a condition based grenade build seems like it would double-dip with Power/Precision/Condition Damage. I don’t know that I’d go all Rampager, but Rampager/Rabid gear/trinkets, or vice versa, seems like it would be a pretty solid approach.
Again, I’m just curious; I’d love to hear a good explanation for why Rampager/Rabid would not be a wise approach compared to an alternative.

Rampager would offer the best DPS for a p/p condition build, but it is pretty much the condition damage version of berserkers, meaning full glass cannon.
Since p/p engineers often skirt close to melee ranges of other professions, many people prefer some survivability stats.
At least, that’s my take on it.
@Eastcorn that’s one of the reasons yeah, that’s it’s good to have some toughness and viatality, because condition damage is a matter about outlasting people!
Another reason, and the problem with Rampager is the “big” stat on it, is precision, and when doing a condition damage build, you want the big stat to be condition damage most of the time, and that’s the main reason I mix Rabid and Carrion armor for getting the stats I want when doing condition damage builds!
