Back to engi! WvW
Hi Alfieb,
I’ve recently came back to the game after a long hiatus (6mths) and after getting a few recommendations from some great people on here I’m running with Grenades, Elix Gun, Rocket Boots with (30,10,0,20,10) on traits.
-(Shrapnel/Incendiary Powder I can’t make my mind up on, Explosive Powder & Grenadier)
- Hair Trigger
- Invig Speed/Backpack Regen
- Speedy Kits
Like I said, i’m no pro but have found myself doing well in Small-ish groups & zergs with a fair amount of AOE attacks and in small groups, good CC etc.
Always feel fairly underpowered in 1v1’s (which is unsual for an Engi? – as I said, i’m pretty rusty after the break) even with full Rabid/Dire exotic armour and same w/full Ascended accessories/rings etc.
Will be good to see what people say.
Hello I use mostly all dire gear with a few rabid jewels to proc incendiary powder and bleeds. I use the same exact 30/10/0/20/10 set up except withoit grenadier, for utilities I use bomb kit rocket boots and tool kit and I do fairly well against all classes really! I sometimes have problems with condibombing necros, and sometimes against eles (mostly only when icant get my condis to stick on them). Other than that I really like the class and its balance and its a nice switch up from my thief. I think they are right in the middle of the pack in terms of power and balance
30/10/0/20/10 with nades/EG is good, but an alternative would be 20/10/20/10/0 using power shoes for your movement speed and invigorating precision in firearms to proc vigor from alchemy
Carpboy is the man Alfieb i’d give whatever he says a try, haha.
Would also recommend checking out Koroshi’s videos and tutorials on t’internet. Learnt a good few tricks and general combos there.
Take care

I’m guessing it should be 30/10/20/10/0. That’s the build I always seem to land on when I start theorycrafting roaming builds. For now at least. I think it covers all the bases pretty well, gives you solid damage, good defense, and great mobility. The only thing I change sometimes is using Runes of the Traveler, allowing the loss of Power Shoes and 10 more points for Backpack Regenerator.

Btw what are your guys thoughts on the 30 in Explosives.
If an Engi is running a Rabid condi build (30,10,0,20,10) – what do you recommend choosing for the Explosives traits? I’m terrible with maths and see a lot of conflicting talk regarding Shrapnel/Incendiary Powder.
I think at the moment my instinct tells me to run Empowering Adrenalin for +5% dmg when endurance isn’t full (seems like that would be more consistent than shrapnel but who knows, with Incendiary Power…. (plus obviously the Grenadier trait for Grandmaster).
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Lol…i cant believe i did that.
No empowering adrenaline is pretty trash, especially for a condi build. Youd want either forceful explosives or shrapnel. Then in the master tier you ALWAYS want incendiary powder if youre condi
Haha, right after I called you the man Carpboy you go and make a mistake like that – you’ve ruined your legend! (jokes)
Will get rid of empowering adrenaline and probably throw in forceful explosives alongside my IP. Feels like it would be better in shorter fights in WvW etc.
Adamantium – one more thing, what you said re: Traveler runes, confused how that allows you to get rid of Power shoes? Did you mean Speedy Kits?
Power Shoes seems really useful for that instant repositioning in WvW/CC’ing and chasing etc. Can’t see why Traveler Runes would mean that wouldn’t be needed any longer.
Thanks

Traveler Runes gives the same +25% speed boost.

Sorry mate, was thinking of Rocket Boots, had myself mixed up. I don’t have Power Shoes in my build, I’m one of those frustrated kit swappers with Speedy Kits & I can’t afford Traveler Runes (currently saving up – hoping they will be cheaper when changes to Runes come in). Will be great not to need to swap kits all the time, even if Speedy Kits is 33% increase and Traveler Runes 25% – it’ll be a relief not to be constantly switching!

Yeah I’m sitting on a few, will finish the set most likely if nothing else better comes along that’s as flexible.

I had no idea im a legend. I better start proof reading all my posts to maintain my image all joking aside some other people in the engi forums are probably a lot better than me. I just post a lot

I usually run grenades and bombs, so I use bomb radius+incendiary powder+grenadier.
When I switch out toolkit for bombs, I use shrapnel.

In a small group setting, I find that it is pretty important to have bomb kit.
You now can effectively have solid physical damage with a lot of condition damage.
Bombs tend to be used when you run thru the train or when you want to deny an area which happens a LOT in small skirmishes. AE is important when outnumbered too.
We also use the bomb kit in organized small groups to provide group stealth for the initial attack or to reset.
BOB is another skill that tends to get used a whole lot more than the rocket boot toolbelt skill.
I do use rocket boots frequently when solo roaming because of their escape potential.
While you can escape in a very short term with bombs (stealth), you can’t really flee a large zerg as well because engineers lack good gap creators.
Likewise, when I use rocket boots I often go grenade/bomb/boots. One of the great things about rocket boots is that they are blast finishers. So drop that smoke bomb and blast your way out!

Some good food for thought there. At the moment I’m running Grenades/EG/Rocket Boots. May consider swapping out EG for Bombs eventually as it feels fairly defensive/weak (even though has some good utility).
With smoke field from the Bomb into Stealth – there’s smoke bomb + rocket boots/shield (4) x2/big ol’ bomb – as potentials, any i’m missing?
I do enjoy the bombkit now and again. Even if it means having to try and get all up in the enemy zerg to make most use of it and suffering 3 FPS the whole time, haha.
I’m picturing running into zerg, placing big ol’ bomb and trying to rocket-boot out of there could be pretty fun. Max targets on BoB?
Cheers
