My god! What IS that engi build that is nearly unkillable!?

I try to build it myself based off of what I know and have learned but when I think I may have gotten it I join a match and get roflstomped by some bursty thief in 4 to 5 hits or I can’t even outlast a guardian or ele.

So I give up and think “I must just be bad at engi,” but then I come across some total newb to the game who can somehow charge into a 1v5 situation and JUST. NOT. DIE.

I mean my builds get instantly squished by thieves before I can utilize any healing (unless I have elixir S, which I loath wasting on a freaking thief), but then when on my equally bursty thief I run into an engi who can survive through absolutely every bit of damage I do.

I’m just really confused .

Anyone care to help me out here? I seriously don’t understand how being THAT tanky is possible :/

P.S. and i know for a fact they aren’t bomb builds, they usually carry the flamethrower and tool kit, so I know juggernaut MUST play a role in it.

EDIT: And this is in terms of sPvP btw.

There’s your problem. Unkillable and the firearms tree does not mix.

They can. 0/0/20/30/20 is my bunker spec with P/S + Tool Kit + Elixir S + Elixir C, but I’ve messed around in matches with the Flamethrower with Carrion trinket with a P/S going 0/30/20/20/0 to much the same success. It all comes down to playstyle and what you feel more comfortable with.

Tool Kit is obviously more survivable, but perma burn with Might does a lot more damage than people give credit, especially with the added Power for Flame Blast. With Protection Injection and Self-Regulating Defenses along with 20 in Inventions for faster interrupts with your shield, it doesn’t really matter if you put points in Firearms or points in Tools. It’s all overkill unless you’re constantly 1v2ing.

The problem with Tool Kit specs is that you rely on Pry Bar and Static Shot to deal most of your damage for you. If you’re dealing with a competent enemy it’s not nearly as effective as people talk about it on here. In WvW, yes. But in sPvP I’ve had mixed results.

The Flamethrower however delivers relatively good, consistent damage that doesn’t come with a cooldown.

Flamethrower, consistent damage? Sorry, but we must be playing different games. Sometimes as simple as a strafe can make ol’ flamie miss multiple channels in a row.

It’s great for condition damage, you should try it sometime.

It’s great for condition damage, you should try it sometime.

IMO, it’s not that great, unless you put some traits or sigils towards it. It’s very useful for proccing on-crit effects, which makes it synergize very well with something like sigil of earth (bleeding from a flamethrower, who’d have thought?).

I’ve used a build that stacked long duration burns before (you can get it to put over a minute of burn in a few seconds), but I found one that applies frequent, smaller duration burns and other conditions to be much better in PvP due to condition removals.

It’s focus is to hit clusters of enemies though, so I don’t think sPvP is going to be a format where it shines… unless maybe it’s just hotjoin zergs. Although it can work well against thieves trying to hold a point.
