First off hello engineer community! Tomorrow ill be starting my fifth and final character I decided engineer over Necro it seems more fun play in my opinion. So I’m basically looking for an advice you guys are willing to give please. I plan on playing in WvW and pve content. I enjoy roaming with a small group in WvW and we do the world bosses and events. I’m rolling an asura since that’s my favorite race, I have an asuran ele and a guardian.
Anyway if you would be so kind to give any gear or build advice I would be grateful. Thank you in advance for any new help for the engineer noob

It is tough to give advice on builds for an engineer since their are so many ways to play one. The best thing you could do is try everything and settle on something you feel comfortable with. I am getting close to finishing my own build and play style and I’ve been playing one since launch.

I would start by trying to figure out what you want to do.

Hey you play on mag same here I play engineer a kitten ton and I wouldn’t mind helping ya out whenever ya need it, but for wvw conditions is a great place to start especially the hgh builds there very simple and are very effective

For wvw I like the jump builds that utilitize a combination of SD / rocket boots.

You can go into the tools like to get reduced cool down on your tool belt (mechanic skills) and to get the static discharge trait that shoots bouncing lightning bolts every time you use a tool belt skill.

If you pair that with abilities like personal battering ram, rifle turret, tool kit, or utility googles you can get a lot of burst dps, with great mobility from rocket boots.

I personally like rifle with med kit, tool kit, utility googles, and rocket boots. You pack a nasty punch, and with kit refinement, you can still super jump away when things get dicey.

great for roaming with theives / warriors / ele’s

With engies, the general rule of thumb is that if you can justify your choices logically and run the build acceptably, it’s a viable build. There aren’t any engie skills considered worthless, and its very easy to put together a build suiting any particular skillset.

In general, I advocate focusing yourself on one area: choose between bunker, support, cc, crit damage, or condi damage. Pick a weapon that is applicable to your role (shield is amazing for bunker, pistols pack a punch with condis, rifle is godly for cc or crits) and in general, you’ll also want at least one kit that fills a similar or synergistic function. Toolkit is the canonical bunker kit, bombs function well with bunker and support if you take Elixir-Infused Bombs in the invention line, elixir gun works well with support, flamethrower works well with bunker or crits, and grenades work ok with crit or amazing with condis.

Once you’ve got that, you’re half done. Pick your utilities to complement your function: gadgets give cc and mobility, elixirs give damage buffs and support, turrets give CC and meh damage, and an all-kit build has crazy versatility but might not use a kit as well as a more specialized user.

Your elite skill, 90% of the time, will be supply drop. It’s too good of a skill to pass up, and is a really wonderful elite. Elixir X is unreliable, and the mortar, while a lovely idea, is extremely bugged (don’t use it).

Got this far? Now you’re in the home stretch! Choose traits to complement the big parts of your build. Focus on damage with grenades? Take explosive traits. Focus on damage with anything else? You’ll want firearms. Use elixirs? That’s what alchemy’s for. If you do WvW, I’ll strongly strongly recommend that you put 10 points into tools and take Speedy Kits, since it allows you to keep 100% swiftness on yourself.

As far as gear goes, see the same guidelines as the traits. Take what most enhances your primary focus.

Wow! Thanks for quick and helpful responses, some of the profession communities are not as nice. Well today is the day I get to start my engineer. I like that there seems to be no one viable build, that way your not boxed in. Well I look forward to the new character and a good relationship with the community. Thanks

About boxed in – true. It’s so changable so u can’t meet 2 same builds (except dolyaks that brainlessly copypaste other builds) All depends on your knowing the class.

TRY ALL the skills and don’t hurry, learn it then u will enjoy it much more)

I never had so much fun unlocking a new utility at low levels than with my engineer. You unlock a kit and you get 5 new skills! And every utility is at minimum 2 skills due to our awesome toolbelt. You can basically build yourself around any kit. Find what’s most fun for you and build around it. Or, like others have said, figure out how you want to play (support, dps, bunker, etc) and then build accordingly. GL and welcome.

As you level, try and figure out if you want to gravitate towards power or conditions. Both are very viable choices, but there is a pretty big difference in the kind of gear, traits, and combat styles you’ll have between the two. Also, if you do choose conditions, make sure you always have enough access to burn.

I hope you enjoy your new character, Engineer is, in my opinion, the single most fun class in the entire game.

Experiment as you level while gear is cheap. There are quite a few viable builds. Watch out for engineer syndrome though. After playing your engineer for too long everything else will seem pretty dull. Not a bad thing, but your other chars won’t like you for it.

@ OP: Engineer takes time and practice more so than other classes, and genuinely plays completely different than every class.

For starters, when piecing together that first build, try out everything…well except Mortar, it’s a wholesale piece of !@#$ wrapped in burnt hair and shoved inside road kill that got hit by a gravel truck…twice. That being said every other skill presents interesting build choices that’re varied degrees of viable in varied situations and game modes. Turrets for example are not well suited for WvW, but in sPvP they can be used to lock down capture points effectively.

Long and short is develop a play style, draw upon your experience with the other classes you’ve leveled, and ensure you’ve built to counter them. Otherwise welcome to the wild wacky world of Flamethrowers, Rocket Boots, and air dropped Supply Crates.

^ so true!!

I have the hardest time staying interested in any of my alts. It’s always back to Engi for me. In fact, my engi started out as just another alt….

Grats! You picked one of the best small party WvW roaming professions IMO!

The Engineer does take longer to really master than most other professions, but is well worth it! Some tips would be – you can get a ton of practice in the mists PVP and toy around with all sorts of build ideas, remember to be thinking about combo fields and finishers – Engineers have a lot and thinking about it from the beginning will be easier than relearning it later.

LOL So I take it Mortar is your favorite skill for the engineer?

Thanks i hope its a fun class to play the mesmer I couldn’t do it was so boring to level.
