Main Warrior | Every other class at 80
I only play WvW
Im mostly looking for something to bookmark and use when i hit 80. there are barely any to no WvW builds here i can find, so if you have one please post it. WvW roaming solo is all i want to do.
Thanks in advance
Im just severely confused at how to play this class. everyones tossing around terms i dont even know and theres a million different setups. I just want something that works in PvE and WvW without needing to switch everything out just to do it.
With engies, the general rule of thumb is that if you can justify your choices logically and run the build acceptably, it’s a viable build. There aren’t any engie skills considered worthless, and its very easy to put together a build suiting any particular skillset.
In general, I advocate focusing yourself on one area: choose between bunker, support, cc, crit damage, or condi damage. Pick a weapon that is applicable to your role (shield is amazing for bunker, pistols pack a punch with condis, rifle is godly for cc or crits) and in general, you’ll also want at least one kit that fills a similar or synergistic function. Toolkit is the canonical bunker kit, bombs function well with bunker and support if you take Elixir-Infused Bombs in the invention line, elixir gun works well with support, flamethrower works well with bunker or crits, and grenades work ok with crit or amazing with condis.
Once you’ve got that, you’re half done. Pick your utilities to complement your function: gadgets give cc and mobility, elixirs give damage buffs and support, turrets give CC and meh damage, and an all-kit build has crazy versatility but might not use a kit as well as a more specialized user.
Your elite skill, 90% of the time, will be supply drop. It’s too good of a skill to pass up, and is a really wonderful elite. Elixir X is unreliable, and the mortar, while a lovely idea, is extremely bugged (don’t use it).
Got this far? Now you’re in the home stretch! Choose traits to complement the big parts of your build. Focus on damage with grenades? Take explosive traits. Focus on damage with anything else? You’ll want firearms. Use elixirs? That’s what alchemy’s for. If you do WvW, I’ll strongly strongly recommend that you put 10 points into tools and take Speedy Kits, since it allows you to keep 100% swiftness on yourself.
As far as gear goes, see the same guidelines as the traits. Take what most enhances your primary focus.
This is from another thread. Most engineers end up making their own builds tailored to their playstyle, since there really aren’t any cookie cutter builds.
If you want solo play, kits to look at are bombs, toolkit, and flamethrower. Elixir gun is primarily support, and grenades in a 1v1 is somewhat similar to (albeit better than) a staff ele in a 1v1: Unless you severely outskill the opponent, chances are it’ll be ineffective.
My current roaming build is this:

It’s more a bunker than damage build, but it hits decently hard with bomb kit. I use it for solo roaming, but it also works in PvE content where having support or a tougher party member can be beneficial.
Well thank you O.O
Also, you said you were confused at some of the terms being thrown around; if you list them, I can do my best to define/explain them for you.
HGH was one.

HGH means Human Growth Hormone. It’s an Elite Trait in the Alchemy line that grants 20 second of Might with any use of an Elixer. The Alchemy line by default grants Vitality and increased Boon Duration. And Might will increase BOTH Power based damage and Condition Damage.
An “HGH” build is a Might based build, with good amounts of Health – so it’s kind of “tanky”. But it does demand that you invest heavily in a Trait line (Alchemy) which is mainly full of defensive traits. That’s the trade-off.
Per your original post….
I know people will chime in about what a wuss I am, and that I need to LTP – but Engineer is not the profession that I would recommend for WvW roaming. I’ve got over 1,600 hours on my Engi, and am pretty darn good, but it’s a tough class to learn and it’s very unforgiving to mistakes.
Pretty much as Soon said. In general, HGH makes most DPS builds stronger if they can spare the points and utility abilities necessarily. SD (Static Discharge) builds usually can’t do it, either for a lack of available traits or a lack of available ability slots, but many grenades builds and nearly all flamethrower builds can.
Also, what Soon said about complexity is spot-on. Engineer is a fairly difficult class to learn, and you never hit a point where suddenly you’re a master. There’s always something more to learn. Unfortunately, I’m more gifted in theory than in practice, so I personally have quite a bit to learn. Someone once made the analogy of an engineer being like an elementalist without a rotation, if that helps explain it.
I would still recommend that you try the profession, since so many people love it and are extremely supportive of it, but go in knowing the risks. Its a heck of a good time, but its got the difficulty to go with that.
