Build choices
Well, what are you using right now?
what build you use depends on your play-style. You could use a TankCAT build with a rifle. The jump shot and net skills on rifle will be very useful when using the melee kit. I think it would work very well with gadgets now that they made them viable with lowering cool downs and the rocket boots buff (for mobility). You are going to be traveling down that trait line anyways.
The FT/EG build has become more interesting because you only need to put 20 in firearms instead of 30 to get the best skills for the build. After the patch I switched back to this build with traits put in 10/20/0/20/20. I am running with med kit, EG, FT, rocket boots, and the supply crate. I switch rocket boots to something better for the situation when it’s not needed (I used them once in that lava fractal and jumped right into the lava when fighting the Shaman). Sometimes in PVE roaming I switch out the EG to something else (a gadget maybe battering ram or remote mines) and just have fun. Switch out to whatever you think will benefit you in the situation you are going in to.

Lots of builds are viable right now. You want rifle, OK. To be honest, P/S and Rifle aren’t too different (One has more condition damage, other has more white damage, both have good control).
Likewise, both damage and bunker builds work well. I personally play a too-kitten -hard-to-kill bunker that does little damage, but I’ve seen glass cannon engies around too.

Use soldier or sentinel gear and abuse your blocks. You get a 2 second block, a 3 second block, a projectile reflect, tons of CC, and tons of mobility. Also, this build can very easily work with a rifle (I actually used a rifle up until I got a cool looking shield I wanted to keep instead). All you have to do is change Inventions VIII, Reinforced Shield, to something else.

This is especially good when doing dungeons with anyone that applies burning, since you’ll deal 10% more damage to burning targets and you already have decent uptime. Go with berserker gear for heavy offense or soldier gear for some more defensiveness. Also, the weapon sigil can vary: smoldering gets better burn uptime, but on-crit procs will happen A LOT with this build, so any of those work as well.

In this build, you NEED to use berserker gear in order to get anywhere. You’ll primarily be popping your elixirs, stacking might, and blasting away with your autoattack. Rifle #3 and #5 do amazing damage, but require melee ish range to use, so be careful. Elixir U is an amazing damage tool, but only use it when you know that you’ll get to use its entire duration for damage.

Every time I read the word Tankcat I die a little inside.
So i am about to hit 80 with my engi and i was considering a few builds and was wandering what you guys think would suit me best. I am going to be running round wvw with all sorts, in zergs on my own and with a few guildies sometimes.
I was first of all wandering whether the TANKCAT build was still viable? Does any1 know? Or maybe the build here:
Is there any other builds i should be considering? I will also be doing dungeons alot and world completion. Also, would the TANKCAT build work with rifle? Simply because i love the look of predator :p
They’re going to have to make some pretty substantial changes to break the TANKCAT build , to answer your question its very much still viable if not more now than before. Everything in the build synergizes perfectly , and you’ll hit for some impressive dmg even being so insanely tanky.

EDIT: The recent patch have buffed the build quite substantially , being CCed you’ll get hit for less than when not

You are pretty much immortal with decend FT damage what will provide you lots of badges (I usualy farm about 250 badges/hour if there are good fights). Lots of mobility, almost immune to condis.

Yeah those ascended items are for MAXED geared zerkers , going to take a while to get all 5 pieces and infusions . Just substitute them for ruby orbs and zerker exotic jewelry
