Can I not suck?

In my opinion the issue your haveing is that your useing all berserkers equip. Berserkers stats are great for produeing insain damage (yay!) But you are going to be very squishy. That goes for any class useing full zerker not just engi. I would recomend starting out by switching to maruaders gear as you will see a decent jump in survivability and a very tiny loss in damage. If you still find yourself being to squishy you can try one of the amulets with toughness or healing power.
As for the “wet noodle” part engi isent a class where every skill does super damage rather its confined mostly to a few specific skills that HAVE to land. The berserker stat set favors things like granade barrage hammer 2 and 3 and rampage (god its so funny.) So if your fighting and not consistantly landing those skills your damage isent going to be as increadily high as you would expect from that that stat set. In my experiance engi dosent not lack damage at all it just requires timeing.

Alright, so I will try switching over to Marauders gear, and see how that goes. Because I really enjoy it, just the dying part has got me, umm, sodium enriched…
EDIT
Changed some things.

As padra pointed out, berserker stats are an awful option for vs a player, you have to remember, you are fighting against players who will have 25k of hp “at best”, these arent pve mobs with inhumans amounts of hp, you can sacrifice damage, and use it for more better survival stats.
Marauder is the recommended option, theres other stats you could toy with too, soldier, celestial, just make sure the stats you select offer vitality or toughness, one of the two stats will be good enough for keep you alive more time.
Oh, another thing, trait the auto Elixir S, its totally helpful in dueling scenarios.

Are there statistical tiers to aim for, such as a certain armor/hp/attack/crit dmg. ect?
As I said I whole heartedly enjoy the class, I just need to help refining it so I am not shooting myself in the foot before I even begin.

To help you specifically, no because everyone handles it differently…
In general and IMO, WvW builds should aim for 1500 vitality and 1500 toughness (if you got a high HP class, you can skimp on vitality). Full berserker will only mean two things – power sustain builds gonna kill you before you kill them (especially ranged will probably drop you below 50% hp before you even get in range to hit them back) and condi sustain builds gonna kill you because you’re never gonna bring enough condi cleanse to beat top tier.
Nothing I have seen in WvW has changed my opinion in that the condi engie is superior to power engie in small scale, in the current enemy build ecosystem. In particular it easily beats power when fighting thieves (unless said thief is an idiot, in which case power do fine too). For the power engie to take the lead again it has be very specific enemies, basicly 10+ man guild groups built for heavy melee sustain blobbing and condi cleanse. But then you start to go outside small scale anyway.
As a note that probably 90% of engies disagree with, I’d also say you could try something very simple – toss out that healing turret. Replace with gyro or elixir. See if it changes your odds. No really, just try it lol. When fighting engies, I have seen so many cycle their healing turret blasts… only to end up at +-0 HP because it took too long. Some are great it at, but far from all.

After taking 1500 Tough/Vit suggestion from you. I know condition builds are all the rage right now, but, I guess I’m a ol’ school power hipster at heart.

I tossed that stupid thing years ago. HT is and has always been a bunk skill, I never understood what anyone ever saw in it. /shrugs
