I’m just a new engie looking for some help :P

Build:
I know I am going to go 30 into explosives, but I have no idea where the rest should go to complement condition/power.

Gear & Weapons:
Is carrion armor/weapons decent for a cond. engie? (pistol/pistol) I don’t want to focus on crits, mainly survival. For runes I was planning 5x Rune Of The Nightmare and 1 Rune of the Undead/Necromancer. Accessories I have no idea.

Any help would be awesome I’m not at 80 yet, but I wanted to start collecting some gear.

Right, so, my personal preference is 30/10/0/30/0, forgoing the speedy kits for increased boon duration and an extra elixir trait (which basically amounts to the same thing with clicking more buttons and a few different benefits). P/P or P/S can be used, I prefer the former for more access to the burn condition (which is one of our strongest conditions), along with the aoe immobilize/cripple which actually effects a lot of bosses. For skills, depending on need, med kit or elixir H (med kit for solo wandering, elixir H for dungeons), grenades, elixir B, any skill you need, and supply crate since it’s really our only option.

For gear, adding in crit chance increases the number of conditions we apply, so rabid is great for a balance between survivability and condition damage, while rampagers’ is good for straight damage if you think you can dodge. Runes are at your discretion, condition duration is always helpful, as is condition damage or Runes of the Undead, which turns your toughness into more condition damage. Sigils are again at your discretion, just be wary of shared cooldowns (normally one proc effect and one on kill effect is best).

Accessories I haven’t gotten too deep into (I’m a terrible at endgame progression, but I love dungeons and pvp!), but following the same pattern of Cond./Prec./Toughness or PPCond should work for your numbers.

Hopefully this helps some, and never be afraid to try new things. (Like a burning damage FT spec in pvp. They said it couldn’t be done, and they were sorta correct! It’s fun as hell though.)

Here’s a fairly typical condition damage grenade build: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQJAqalspSXHxSfF17ICoC5loHPGlNZfewWpFEC-jECB4MCh0CAkIJMFqIasFhFRjVJTQWdDTHLpCBsYNA-w

Some people prefer this build with full-out rabid gear instead, but I like the carrior for this setup. The additional power means you can apply significant direct damage pressure as well as high condition damage pressure very easily, and the vitality boost maintains a good balance with the toughness. Full out rabid gear will still work nicely with this build though.

I use the 6 altruism runes because it provides party support, and the fury uptime helps you secure more crits. However, it’s very standard for a build like this to run 2 runes of the fire, 2 runes of hoelbrak, and 2 runes of strength, so that your might stacks stay very high. Alternatively, you can use 2 runes of the monk, 2 runes of the water, and 2 major runes of either monk, water, or sanctuary (not superior). This will provide a boost to all boon duration.

If you’re wondering why I don’t use the runes you’ve said you’re looking at, it’s because they don’t provide boon duration increases or extra might stacks. The point of this build is to build up a lot of might stacks by itself (easily 10+), which will push the damage numbers up more than a full rune set like the runes of nightmare will. This is done with the HGH trait and elixirs, as well as kit swapping with the sigil of battle and extra might stacks from the runes of altruism. The extra condition duration can be compensated for by eating the rare veggie pizza.

The runes you’re looking at would possibly be better in a build that was not elixir/HGH focused, but it likely wouldn’t be able to compete in terms of damage unless you also changed some other things.

I run a build similar to Yam’s, but with less health/condition damage and more toughness/precision. 2x Rune of Strength, 2x Rune of the Fire, 2x Rune of Lyssa, 1x Sigil of Battle, 1x Sigil of Corruption for maximum power, might duration and condition duration. I strictly WvW, and it works well in both zergs and havoc groups. My parties of 3-5 regularly trash enemy parties of 5-8, and our TC 20-man zergs stomp enemy zergs twice our size.

Inventions and tools only have one decent trait each for this kind of build which elixirs can semi replicate. Giving up hgh or hair trigger and fast acting or 409 for perma vigor isn’t worth it for grenades. 30/10/0/30/0(5-8-11, 6, 2-6-11) is really the best option. I prefer 30% boon duration and 20% might on runes and sigil of strength/force or corruption with rabid gear and p/p. I like toolkit so much, it makes carrying S hard but necessary.

It depends on where you want to use the build primarily. For PvE, an offensive set like Rampager’s is optimal. If you would use the build more in WvW or find yourself dying too much in dungeons Carrion or Rabid are your best options.

As for builds there is the very standard HGH grenadier (30/10/0/30/0), which is not as good for PvE so I’m not the biggest fan of it, but in dubs it wouldn’t hurt near as much.
Other options include putting more points into firearms or tools to give you some options for utilities (tool kit for WvW is a great skill), but the choice is ultimately up to you.
