Honestly imo, none of that sounds that appealing…
Build Variety. They have more builds than any other class.

If you need to be convinced to play Engi… Then don’t bother imo. Play what you like, not what others tell to do.

play ranger, there are just few of them in any type of game.
we need more rangers
ps. best pet is bear
if you need to be convinced, you prolly need to do something else

“Convince me” Well hell no. If you actually show any form of interest or curiosity, you don’t need us to make you roll an Engi.

It’s about what you want to do. If you choose between guard, ele or engi, in short you choose between the support, the aoe damage glasscannon or the slightly less dps allrounder.

Please don’t play engineer. The class is not for you. It takes someone special to enjoy what the class brings to the table and from your comments here, I don’t think it’s a good match.
i do recommend you to give engineer a try despite them being inneftective in many aspects it is so far the most fun class i ve played
amazing for dungeons and as some said has the games biggest build diversity PM me if you want me to join you on my engi

I do have interest but its gonna take a hell of alot to pull me from a lvl 62 Guardian. Plus leveling Engi at low levels sucks so hard. I ahve delete them 4 times, maybe more.
Have you considered leveling with a friend or guildie? Leveling with someone you know is usually more fun and its nice to have someone to talk to while doing the mindless hearts.

again, it isnt really engi levelling that sucks, engi has it really good with bombs, rocket boots, and eventually speedy kits and other strong adept traits.
if youre thinking that you dont like engi skills, dont play engi. but try to at least figure out if its the games entire levelling experience holding you back, or if its that you dont like engi.

There is like 1 major build you can go and swap out a few traits. But build diversity? No, only in pvp / wvw.

Wow guys, show some support! Long post incoming.
Why should you definitely run an engineer?
1) Viability. Don’t worry, in pvp, in WvW and pve, you can do anything and people will always welcome you, except maybe in organized blobvblob in wvw.
2) Build diversity. Some core traits are important and you pretty much have to take them, and running at least one kit is preferable, but from there you’re free! Our three weapon sets are good and feel different! Don’t like nades? Go bombs! Or flamethrower even! Don’t like Elixir Gun? Slick Shoes, Rocket Boots, Elixir S are all great choices! There are many runes, many armor stats, many sigils that you can experience with to get the engineering experience YOU will like the most.
3) Fun, eye-appealing animations. Not to flashy (mesmer), not too noisy (elementalist), never annoying (ranger). Except for maybe thief, the engineer’s animations are the coolest in the game. You’ll love throwing slow grenade at 1500 range in wvw, jumping on your foes, be knocked-back by your own rifle, make your screen disappear under your fire bomb explosion.
4) The kits. Some hate them (see the long thread on this subforum), but some of us think they actually look good! You’re fixing your party’s problems with the tools you brought to the job, with style.
5) The fast paced combat and constant progression. No CD on kits, which mean you’re always casting something! you’ll never be like 111111111 on your staff like you used to! And the really amazing part is that you’re constantly discovering new combos, new kiting techniques, new way to fight different opponents. Each fight is different on an engi, even if you run the same build.
6) The small community. In pvp lately, you can see lots of engis, because of the current meta. But I can assure you that in pve and wvw, you won’t encounter many! Surprise your opponents, and impress your friends with your cool-looking engineer.
7) Jumping Puzzles. If you’re into them but don’t like to fall 59 times at the same spot, this profession is for you.
8) Rocket Boots
Just do it already, what are you waiting for!

Yea, it’s odd how many people don’t know about bombs. I am leveling an engineer now and I feel like a one trick pony because there is no reason to use anything else.
Big Bomb >Fire Bomb >Con Bomb kills just about anything. I could chain it with Elixir gun Acid bomb for 6 might stacks or more likely blunderbuss to Jump shot. Things just melt and I use the same combo in any situation.

These. I was afraid to be effective in PvE (preferred content) I would have to use a cookie cutter build of 6/6/0/0/2 with E-Gun, FT, and Nades. My current engineer is around 25 and I do enjoy finding things that aren’t the same as the usual meta builds.
DECISION MADE!
After comparing and contrasting both this post and the one on Guardian. I have decided Engineer wins for a large diversity pool. The Guardian is mostly defensive boons, while Engineer is conditions. I prefer to boost allies with offensive boost but vulnerability stacking is close. Plus their range is a huge plus towards Engineers. I just like staying out of the way and dropping heals or debuffing enemies. I will keep my Guardian for a side alt, a first for me in any mmo ever.
I join the ranks of the gun wield, arc-welding Engineers!

I read this topic and i wont open another, so i ask you guys here. Got similiar dilema as OP. I would like to play some heavy condition profession or class who is best in that. In every MMO i liked DOT-s M8 from guild told me to go with engi, but didnt got answer why, pros and cons. My dilema is Necro or Engi. Mostly WvW – solo roam or small groups but condition build. I got power build at my Thief and Ele, and dont find them good enough to invest gear for condi. Necro and Engi are top as i read, but one of them are probably better in aspects i want to invest time – WvW(small groups, zerg if necessery) and sPvP – condi build mostly, but from time any because i can change it often i pvp. So? Engi or Necro? You probably got experience with those two profession so i ask you for help so i can level my next alt cross fingers for engi be objective
if you think youll want to solo roam, engi is the clear choice and dont use necro. necro has no escapes.

That’s true. Engineer has leaps and perm swiftness. But that’s not really what matters really. Every profession can roam, what makes engineer unique?
You don’t see many engineers in WvW. They are not part of GWEN (for guardian, warrior, elementalist, necromancer, the professions played in large scale combats), and they are not popular roamers like thieves, mesmers and rangers. But they should be.
Solo roaming on an engineer is an amazing feeling, especially when outnumbered (which let’s be honest, is most of the time). Other professions can disengage even better, like thieves or warriors, but engineer has the funniest escapes. Just picture it, you are throwing grenades or bombs behind you, blocking with your gear shield, your vigor uptime allowing to do multiple dodge rolls, and completely escape when all hope seemed lost by leaping into one of your water fields! You run so fast, cast so many skills, dodge so much and can make such a good use of line of sight, that the engineer gameplay in WvW really FEELS like you’re fighting for your life, a feeling you don’t get when you play necro and basically eat most of the attacks relying on your big double health pool. And all that you have in addition to be really, really effective. Even when kiting, you do a lot of damage, so if you’re losing, you can just kite for a while and it will probably turn the odds in your favor.
The only advantage I see in choosing necro, is spoiling the joy of the lucky ones who picked engineer by rolfstomping them (they are your strongest hard-counter).
This is video was posted a few days ago by an excellent player. Watch it and you’ll know why engineer is a beast in WvW.

I’d say there’s more build diversity in PvE than PvP! In PvP if you run a sub-optimal build, you will lose! In PvE if you run a sub-optimal build, you can still win because PvE is lolez! You can literally go into the hardest PvE dungeon with a condition Necromancer wearing full Cleric gear and still beat it! #PvEsports!
Wahoo! Bye frands!

Very true. But I also think engineer is the profession which has the most viable “builds” in pvp, so to speak. Sure HGH builds, SD builds and pretty much anything without IP and Backpack Regenerator is a big no-no, but after that you have the choice:
Celestial: FT instead of toolkit. I’ve seen a top player on twitch play that, don’t remember if it was backpack or blackjack (their name are too similar!). Small traits and rune tweaks.
Rabid: p/s or p/p. Bombs or grenades (which also means different traits). A lot of very good choices for the rune and sigils (your choices in the matter were an inspiration for me, Vee Wee). You can also play bombs, nades and no tool kit, or all three.
Both: Slick Shoes, Elixir S or EG.
Yes, that’s mainly utilities, but taking for example bombs over grenades completely changes the play style. Now compare it to the only two (and a half) viable builds on a thief, and laugh.
Because how many other classes can give a constant 20 might and vulnerability in PVE?
Ele.

There is only one reason which I could think of: you can play anything you want pretty viable. Wether it is dps, tank, heck even heal! The gameplay is really pushing you to the limit since it is really hard working to bring out the best.
People talk about ele being better, but I think they are quite much a tie. Idd say you should make both an ele and an engi and play with them to find out which playstyle suits you best!
Good luck and greetings!

For power builds I prefer my Necro but for condition builds I prefer Engi. But I’m a bit biased, because I could never really quite get the hang of terrormancer. I always felt like it took too long to build up enough conditions on enemies with terrormancer and never really felt like I was putting out much burst condi damage. On the other hand with Engi, I feel like I can lay on and maintain a wide spread of conditions in no time at all and deal some heavy burn damage. And it gets even better in WvW thanks to perplexity runes and confusion damage added to the burning.
And then of course there is the superior disengage options on the Engineer compared to the Necromancer. Also love having stealth in WvW, and being able to pull people off towers and keeps with Magnet Pull.

Bro… Don’t be this guy…

Bah, won’t matter anyways, even if you run any other rune set you’ll still be pointed at for running Perplexity runes.
