I completly did, and I’ll write it again. People prefer greatswords… right?
On a serious note, it’s mostly because I grew sick of Warriors, Guardians and even Mesmers for that matter and they often tend to be favourites amongst people, you’ll get to see them everyday with their tall and dark greatswords charging on mobs and players alike being like “aaaaargh-dbalzkbalablablDEMACIAbrbrlablabla!”.
I mained Engi because it’s a cool and completly customizable class, but it’s also out of frustration from the people above, which often tend to look down on you and paste USELESS on your face even if you deal superior condition damage and pack a strong punch in PvP.

Engineer has comparable burst to other professions in terms of cooldowns, damage, and difficulty to land. However, staying alive as a dps engi takes more work than other professions.
But yes, I love the flexibility of kit swapping and the like. Engies are certainly a solid profession for PvP right now with a ton of good builds.
It was even more fun when engineers were actually the “worst” class in pvp a few months back. Warriors were the second worst. Nobody liked engineers because frankly, nobody played them.
Thus, it was that much more fun to blow people up in 1 hit and get endless pm’s asking “how????”

This class freaking rocks, and is secretly OP imo. LOL
Loving this! I used to main mesmer, but this class has so many different answers to situations with kits and the like, it is just AWESOME.
And it also seems like I am not tied to a certain build to be effective. I LOVE THIS CLASS!!!

I’ve played engi as one of my PVP characters since launch… I don’t recall it ever “sucking.” Engis have been nerfed numerous times since release (nerfs to elixer R, elixer S, several grenade nerfs), and yet they are still an excellent PVP class.

As MrForz alluded to, a lot of it has to do with difficulty. You cannot just spin and win with your greatsword like other classes can.
The Bomb Kit with 240 radius is a lot easier to use than it used to be. Before, it was just hard to actually land bombs on targets because people could so easily avoid them. The Grenade Kit is also very good, but its lack of an auto-attack makes it harder to use. And then there’s the Flamethrower, which requires using your camera properly to make the most out of it.
Mechanically, the Engineer is just a lot more complicated to play than Warriors, Guardians, and Thieves are. So you’ll naturally see less of them. It was never a question of the Engineer sucking, so much as the number of players that suck at using them. I’d say that Engineers have always quietly been near the top of all professions in PvP. Perhaps not always—or ever—the “best” one, but we’ve always been effective.
I’ve leveled other classes to 80, but I always have played my Engineer in sPvP.
