Basically I recently received two ascended armor boxes. One is rabid, the other is dire. Is it advisable to use both or to only use one? It’ll be for p/p or p/s engi. Any advice?

Yes. Dire and rabid are a very good combination, when it comes to mixing stats. They are arguably the best combination for a condi engi.

Try to get your chance to crit to at least 40%, then the rest being dire stats would work just fine.
