I was reading up on this in Metabattle.

http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Engineer_-_Carrion_Zerg_Grenadier

I was wondering if I can pull this off just as well with Dire Stats instead of Carrion where I will just have Dire stats for armor and weapons and just use Rabid or Carrion stats for accessories.

Hey! I’m actually the guy that wrote that build. The goal is overloading the enemy condi clear so full dire works. Carrion just lets you do damage BEFORE you exhaust their cleanses, so I’d only run dire if you notice they are heavy backline. Which, btw, is more common these days in the pirate ship meta!

Edit: Didn’t see you are still using carrion. The stat distribution is up to you, bud. Just remember what stats you are trading when you modify the gear distribution! That’s the cool thing about engineers though – we are flexible!

I know. I am just a bit torn. And the reason I wanted to go for Dire is because I got a Mathilde’s Bastion and it would be a shame to let that precious shield go to waste

Well I run Dire Pistol and Shield on my WvW roaming build with rabid armor and a mix of rabid and rabid/dire trinkets, so the shield could be used there too!

I got a roaming build established. The issue I have is if it will serve me well for zerging.

Depends on your needs. Dire will give you better survivability than carrion, but carrion will be better direct damage (and overall DPS). However, given that this build is supposed to be used from a backline zerg position, and has a stat distribution that is already quite resistant to spike damage, I’d question as to whether or not you really need that extra survivability.

So while the build will still function in the same way, it may not be as effective in achieving its intended purpose.

You could always just mix in it a bit, like dire weapons and carrion armor, with rabid or rabid/dire accessories.

I’ve been running rampagers armour with celestial accessories and it’s been working well. since engineers can utilise all stats lots of uncommon armour stats will work on them.

I wouldnt recommed running dire for grenades, at least not in zerg. Your direct damage will scale close to zero and condis arent that good anyway for blob vs. blob. They will get cleaned way too fast with all those guards and eles.

If you dont want to fight on the first frontline, i would go much more offensive. I usually run full zerk when i zerg, and hardly ever die. Just stay a little behind your frontline.

I would recommend not building at all for grenades right now as they are going to get a pretty hefty nerf soon enough. You wont even be able to reach that backline without being in range of everyone and their pet wombat.

The replacement for long-range being the new Mortar Kit. Which might not work for conditions at all, unlike the Grenade kit.
So i’d strongly suggest waiting before you invest into a build that is likely getting killed off.

I would take short fuse over enhance performance. I think might is more readily supplied in a zerg anyways.

I think full dire would be too weak though, it seems like some carrion and rabid would help.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

I would go full rabid with some dire jewels if you really need it and i would take incendiary powder … might has been nerfed and so i don’t think that build has a good damage now
