Everytime I talk to people about the engineer, they always say the grenade/rifle build is the best.

I would love a build that would use some of the less used skills. Mines, Stachel (i use satchel a lot in spvp), toolkits, Elixer gun (i’d love to use this) , and a more support role with the med kit

What are you suggestions? Im going to go experiment with some stuff with the elixer gun and a support build, ill reply with what I find.

The problem with engineer isn’t that we have a lot of useless skills. The problem is that most individuals do not know how to combine our skills. Lets use your post as an example.

You mentioned that mines aren’t used often. Did you know that mine field, the toolbelt skills that comes with mine has five blast finishers. You can combine it with smoke field (from smoke bomb or smoke screen from flame turret) to gain 15 seconds of invisibility on a 45 second cooldown. Or you can combine it from one of our water fields (or someone elses water field for that matter) for 5 simultaneous AOE heals.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. We literally have tons of interesting combos. As another example can use accelerant packed turrets + deployable turrets to knock defenders off of some of the walls in WvW.

I just wish that all the combos weren’t so dependent on the bomb kit. I prefer to stay in the backline.

I dunno, most people I talk to exclaim that bombs are extremely better then grenades. I never use grenades myself. So perhaps it is more a matter of what group of folks you talk to OP, and not so much what they say.

Poor craftsman blame their tools. Poor players blame their Engineer.

And also what you’re using them for. Grenades obviously attack further than bombs. Grenadier-trait grenades does more damage than bombs, but elixir-infused bombs are much more survivable/supportive. Bombs are good for point capture/defense, grenades are good at harassment and stationary world bosses

There’re also flamethrower/rifle builds, condition pistol builds, etc, if you don’t like either of those.

So yeah, i know about most of the rifle/condition builds. I didn’t know that about mines, or rather that they stick. Last I check, the flamethrowers smoke screen didn’t work as a combofinisher.

I’m trying a medkit/Exlier gun WvW build. It seems really good so far. Since it seems no matter what build I use, if i get in close some arrow cart or something will tear me apart. So i mostly use my skills as backup, especially during seiges. My exlier guns AoE heal is great since most of the time they crowd around. I can throw medkits, so i can safely give heals from afar without having to worry about getting attacked. I use my 4 as an escape when needed and the 2 when chasing. The mass condition remover is amazing too. Im using a rifle which is good when chasing or getting attacked, backblast + net + 4 on exlier gun + swiftness on medkit = fast get aways. My damage/soloablity isn’t that great. Once my cooldowns are up, i try to provide support. The 50% less regen on the exliers gun auto is great to help get people down (stops them from dodge as much). i’m still working on what to use as my remaining skills. I have the potion that does the rez when using toolbetl, great for WvW. With the mine things, ill probably do that. Placeing down a Exlier AoE heal, then doing the grenades for another mass heal is great in groups i’d assume. Im running 30 in tools and 30 in inventions. 10 in alchemy. Still working on the traits, but most of the things in tools allow me to run very fast. This makes it so that if they target me, i can get out fast. Great for kiting too/chasing people down.

Also we did a 10 vs 20 defend supply camp today with me. We basically held them off till more reinforcments arrived. I popped my cooldowns whenever they were ready and used the mass anti condition on the teammates to help reduce the damage input. I rezzed whenever possible and could do lots of rezzes at once.

More like the mine gadget and its toolbelt skill for extra long combos.
The bomb kit just happens to have 2 fields, fire and smoke, big ol’ bomb’s fuse time is a pain to work with.
Kinda wish the flamethrower’s flame vent would deploy a field, but it might be a bit overpowered then.

I like doing an elixir / elixir gun build with alchemy and tools.

it’s 0 20 0 30 20

I run p/s with the the elixir h, elixir gun, elixir B, and elixir R

My traits are the protection on crit / shield from inventions. the protection injecting, the condition removal on elixir use, and HgH from alchemy, and speedy kits / kit refinement from tools.

I pair it with toughness, healing, condi gear

You get an insane amount of condition removal and survivability. Nice group might buff, condi removal, condi damage, and healing.

I pair it with the mortar for my elite. With regeneration up, the double light fields from elixir gun, and the healing field from mortar it does ~700 healing a second in a small area. You can also use healing turret to get some spike healing in.

It’s a fantastic build for WvW.
