Q:
Does anyone use the Mortar in PvE?
A:
It’s really good in big areas because the 5 skill is so powerful it makes dungeon mobs look like normal mobs, the AoE heal is phenomenal, and the Damage/Conditions from the other skills are great
I run a build with 30 in inventions to switch between it and supply crate. (supply crate for smaller rooms)
When they fix Elite supplies, that skill is going to be Beyond broken in WvW
I’ve used it for defending spots against various mobs when other players are around to draw heat from me. It’s been very useful but I ultimately find the supply drop more useful due to being able to stun enemies and draw some heat off of players with the turrets.
Thank you for the answers – I will have to consider it on a dungeon run then…
I do like mortar elite skill and find it fun- but I personally feel supply crate being far better in most situations.
If you are specced more towards Grenadier or EoD-(bomb), then I do feel mortar might be a more viable option.
A key difference though is- supply crate, you are able to move and gain effectiveness of the skill. Mortar- you are locked down into a position without any mobility.
Had it been an auto-mortar turrent type (player can remote control mortar), then I might feel different.
I grabbed mortar for WvWvW sieges. Not for my own personal use, as I’m a grenadier, but so people without any ranged muscle have something to do :P
Also, I’ve had every skill I wanted for a long time, and I thought “You know, I never see anyone with a mortar.. I suppose I’ll pick it up”
It’s great to punish players bonking at a door in WvW, but I don’t use it unless I’m on a party in PvE.
love the skill itself. It needs no line of site. The damage needs about a 20% boost. Other then the somewhat sup par damage, the skill is great in concept and action.
mmmm I do . Just one of my uses is that I love using my mortar when fighting dragons. I love it against Tequatl the Sunless I never get feared and I am shooting the whole time until he is dead.
Side note, but as I recall, the mortar doesn’t require LoS, but it DOES require an open firing arc. So many times I’ve fired my shells straight into the ceiling…

Yep I have done that many times.
It’s alright, pretty situational, then again all of them are. I use the supply drop currently. I have used the mortar in the past, but you have to watch out: just like the overcharged rocket turret, the mortar/rocket has to go into the air, if you are in an instance with a low ceiling you might be just hitting the ceiling and not hitting the ground. It doesnt happen very often (and obv not in WvW), but it might occur in some dungeons, just keep that in mind.
Personally I find it useful for soloing veteran mobs by slowing them down with the ice field and cripple, blasting them with #1 as much as possible, and knocking them back with a #5 when they start getting close. By the time they get too close to use any of the skills they are usually around 3/4-1/2 life, and I can finish them off while the mortar takes some of the hits.
It shines against some bosses/mobs that do not move.
Sometimes i’ll be able to find a low wall or object that i can set my mortar behind. Then i just lob shells over the wall while being completely untouched throughout the entire fight.
Other than that, i would never use in a situation where my enemies can get to me as the mortars way too fragile.
I generally use it against Champions when there is a group already fighting it. There’s little chance the Champ will single me out. The added range enhancement is nice.
The only issue with the mortar is that it is outdone by a grenadier build. However, if you aren’t running grenades, the mortar does have it’s uses. In dungeons it is useful for setting up choke points as well as holding them. I used a mortar to defeat the mass bandit spawns in CM explore mode. It is also useful against large bosses and champion mobs who get attacked by a ton of players, since you can usually hang back and just attack then heal.
One true good thing that mortar does was it grant you control effect immunity~
Purely for the lols, I tried using Mortal on the last boss in Honour Of The Waves story mode dungeon. It actually worked really well! Best of all, I could use the phrase “Eat mortal you bear killing, dragon worshipping kitten!”
