Does no one feel sorry for thieves?
I don’t.
All those times that they targeted us, the poor defenseless engi with no counter play :’( leaving us to blindly spam bomb kit in anticipation for their lock downs and rotations.
Well not anymore, those days are behind us. Grab your hammers, get your gyros; we’re going thief hunting.
Uhh, only bad Engineers ever had any real issues with thieves.
Weve had a counter for a long time against thieves.
Heavy Condi pressure.
Goggles for anti blind and reveal.
Minefield + the mine itself served as a alert system.

Big-ol-Bomb
etc.
If there is anything that could ruin a thief’s day, it’s a good engie, and that’s before the reveal kicks in :P, they don’t do well against non targetable aoe condi damage pressure. Not a lot they can do when engie puts up a wall of everything other then hope that can burst them down quickly (after engie uses up all there defensive option), or bait them out of their area they set up.
Thieves havn’t been threatening to any decent engie for a long long time.
I don’t even know why one class on it’s own gets 3 ways to Reveal. I mean one would think Analyze on it’s own would suffice if a player has a lot of trouble against Thieves, but putting on one more skill and a trait is just simply overkill.
I think it is because Mesmer’s been a great threat to Engis generally with unblockable dmg + range + stealth, especially since 23rd of June Devs seem to think the way to balance them out is to give other classes Reveal.
Thief is just a class that gets forgotten in that mindset and has to miserably live with it.
In the Thief forum the Idea came up that skills that reveal others should be AoE skills that
- a) only destealth X targets or
- b) make X visible to everyone around, while they still enjoy the benefits of being stealthed.
What do you guys think about that?
Edit: besides, reveal skills should probably get benefits when hitting opponents with no stealth, as that could make them more viable for PvP or WvW Roaming

Doubting you guys have ever played against a good d/p or s/d thief with those answers, i’m not going to explain how one can easily out play any of the above ‘counters’.
Either way it was more of a joke thread to highlight the ridiculous amount of reveal, stability and stealth we will have with the specialization.
Teeeefs are cannonfodder!

Smallscale <3 !
I mean…
I feel bad more now than I will later… Right now they are Poisoned, Bleeding, Burning, and Confused when they fall before me.
Later they will only have to taste a face full of chrome.
3 years they had uncountable mechanic. Its time to grow up teef kids and face real world without stealth babysitting:-)

Well if the player is good, then it simply means you are being outplayed. Get better.
And we officially have too many reveals. I would be happy if one of them were to be re-purposed.
This describes the OP perfectly.

No i dont feel sorry for thiefs or mesmer it is just one skill and now the get a real counter to stealth. I hope other classes get such tools too.

Ok, so the thief is a profession in a video game and the construction of ‘thieves’ as a population is a pretty false one since so many people play a variety of professions.
But even if everything was that black and white, as others have said, engis have been strong against thieves for a looooooong time.
@ JuiceboxHero: If you’re trying to utilize academia for personal attacks, you’re really only demonstrating your ineptitude at really understanding the type of material you’re citing. Terms like the Dunning-Kruger effect describe behaviors, not identities.
I don’t.
All those times that they targeted us, the poor defenseless engi with no counter play :’( leaving us to blindly spam bomb kit in anticipation for their lock downs and rotations.

What?
Engineers counter thieves.

Well, that sounds interesting! But I’m not. Also… Don’t call it a personal attack because it’s not. Oh, and make one on me in the same sentence!
Anyway, the OP both demonstrates behavior that shows his clear lack of understanding of the class regarding its strength against thieves and when pointed out, decides to shift the blame on everyone else on the thread who shares the opinion. Behavior, not identity. I’m not calling him a nerd if he says he’s a trekkie. That’s identity labeling. I’m using a wikipedia link to label his behavior so far.
Let’s move on before it gets off topic, mkay?
My lack of understanding of the class?
Please, explain to me what an engi’s strengths against thieves are. Like i said before, a good thief can out play any of the above ‘counters’ using high amount of evade with s/d or high amount of interrupt with d/p build.
Keeping in mind that until recently Juggernaut didn’t provide any stability leaving us susceptible to cc and the fact that we have access to 2 reveals doesn’t mean much when they are rarely used.
SD is the only build that makes use of analyze and until recently we didn’t have lock on trait not that many builds use it over streamlined kits anyway.
A thief would have to be blind to walk into bomb kit fields or at least not see the animations and disengage until the duration is over. Mines can be cleared with a single dodge roll and a thief can simple shadow step out of range for the duration of a reveal if in fact you do trait or set utility for it.
Again, a good thief can out play any of the above ‘counters’ even if its against a good engi since you’ll be left relying on anticipating their attacks which against a good thief using either blinding powder and or shadow refuge is not easy to predict since they’ll keep extending their stealth times to attack at random intervals.
If that’s not an explanation enough for you then you’re the one that has no understanding.
Gtaoe + passive attacks. Thieves weakness which engineers have a lot of.
I also had a chance to sneek a peek at thieves forum. Engineer have a ridiculous weakness to reflect. It shuts down 3/4 of the engineers and nearly anything that does even half practical damage. Name one profession that doesn’t have reflect. /thread

I do not feel sorry for thieves, no.
I cannot count the times they have jumped me from behind and gotten to escape one I began to win the fight, and they saw thier death to be imminent if they did not run away. Yet they continued to reset fight after fight until I finally kill them. It was like trying to accomplish any task with a pesky fly landing on your ear over and over again. More so with mesmers now. I look forward to having one more tool at my disposal to prevent their stealthy escapes.
part of my lack of sympathy comes from occasionally running a thief myself. I run an unorthodox build that doesn’t depend on stealth completely, and works well for me. So no, I have no apathy for players who completely use stealth as a crutch. The ones that worry me are the good thieves I run across who may put the new thief ES to good use to kick my butt until I adjust to playing against it.
