Drone Speculation
We’re not getting signets. That’s for sure. Probably Stances.
As long as its not more AI. Ill be fine with anything else.
Yeah i guess it will be mantra or signet style. I’d prefer mantras style tho, more active gameplay, especially if there will me multiple “charges”
Wat r u, casul?
Ya Mantras would be cool.
I’d like it to be considered build time, instead of channeling a mantra.
This would mean that you would be stationary when you build your bot, but to compensate, the charge time is much shorter.
So instead of chanelling for ~3 seconds with full movement, you’d end up constructing for 1 – 1.5 seconds, but be held in place. It seems counter initiative, but the drones could maybe last for more charges, but also get destroyed when you go downed. (Except the one drone that sacrifices itself to prevent you from going downed)
What’s up with these guys? Are they gonna be signet passives? Minions? One thought I had is juuuussst maybe Mantras. Highly unlikely, but hear me out. Perhaps you charge up the spell and create x number of drones (2-3) that symbolize the charges left on the mantra. You then get access to some instant cast targeted spells that could sick a drone on an enemy or have one help out an ally.
What do you think these things will do? I’m interested to see what traits come out of this. I think I’ll name mine either Wheatley an Skeets. I wonder if anyone here knows who Skeets is…
I really hope you can name the Drones. :/
That’s the dream ~
I like your idea of the drone function, mine is basically they are signets in passive mode and minions in aggressive mode. Seeing these guys and calling them minions reminds me of a certain movie….
As for naming them sadly highly unlikely, ranger pet’s name gets forgotten when we replace pet and we can’t rename mini pets :/
What if the drones doesn’t have anything to do with the elite spec at all?
Maybe it’s just a full revamp of the turrets?

This. Decimating turret traits makes sense if one would change turrets altogether.

If that was the case I’d imagine they would’ve announced it separately. They’ve already portrayed the hammer welding mask engi with the drones twice now so I’m pretty sure it’s something to do with the elite spec. What a turret revamp it’d be, though.
Until anet fixes pet AI what good will drones be? Its 30/70 whether a necro minion will even attack, and drones sound like they will be armor plated pets. I remain on the fence

I’d definitely enjoy a Mantra approach to the drones; One of my favorite concepts among Mesmer abilities are their Mantras, even if they aren’t necessarily the most useful abilities available. X)
But, then, I’d also definitely enjoy a Minion approach to the drones, which I’m sure everyone is hoping won’t happen. XD It’s mostly because of the various traits pertaining to them, but I love my Minions on my Necromancer. Lots of very good passive effects. Plus, it’d be fun to join in on the Superzergs in WvW comprised of Minion Necromancers.
Whatever it ends up being, I hope that SOMETHING in the Elite Specialization ends up giving some nice healing abilities. With Elixir-Infused Bombs killed off, I can’t play doctor to my friends near as well. ;-;

Well there is going to be a healing drone if they are the utility skills engi’s will be getting. Hoping Druid or Forge is next.
It’s a trap!

You know what would make Drones epic? Ranged attacks which don’t root the minion.
But given the name “Forge”, my money is on dropped bundles that you hit to build them. I hope I’m wrong, but “hitting it to fix it” is one aspect of the Engineer (see Tool kit) not a lot of people are aware of.
Engineers shun magic. They refuse matras, signets, and the like. It is well defined in the lore, so those certainly won’t happen.

Probably similar to ranger spirits.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
I think drones will be drones, not mantras or signets or minions or any other skill type that other professions have.
Now, their function might be nearly identical to one of those things, but I think that, kinda like Revenant, Engineers pretty much have their own thing going when it comes to thier 6-0 skills and skill types.
Probably similar to ranger spirits.
We already have those, they’re called turrets.

Mantra is just the mechanic. Build (channel) and deploy (charges). Signet’s aren’t all that magical; warriors and thieves use signets.
Probably similar to ranger spirits.
If you mean ranger spirits pre-June 23rd patch with the unbound spirits trait, then yea, I expect they will be something like that, although they will certainly do some sort of damage. They look more like they’ll be like spirit weapons, honestly.
However, I hope they’ll be more like Rock Barrier (Ele scepter #2) where they are cast once for a small passive effect around you, then unleashed with a second cast.
They could be a visual representation of the warrior’s adrenaline or we get an elementalist’s attunement ability to assign different properties to the base weapon skills.
The warrior’s adrenaline mechanic is that the more strikes you do, the more “energy” you build up. The teaser video shows a drone attaching to the hammer upon a large explosive strike at the end of the chain. That strike could be similar to the warrior’s burst skill.
Another possibility is that the varied drones are properties you can assign to your hammer or equipped weapon that work like elemental attunements. You slot that particular drone set/kit in your skill bar and swap to it when you want your hammer to have additional properties like CCs or condis, etc and/or different 1-5 skills.

Ah, but here is where things gets interesting: In the silverwaste camp durring living story season 2, you could overheard taimi talk with a charr engineer to learn about magitech. Considering how ANet seems to add the new class/specs to existing characters, and how they have teased about it in season 2, we will most likely have some form of magic aspect in our elite spec.
Edit: Here is the guy. “a metallurgist famous for using magic” sounds like the new forge spec to me, after all, metallurgy is the science of metals and alloys, most commonly used when forging. There have been no other reasons to introduce this guy, and it seemd like the writers really wanted us to catch this whole magic hint.
His dialogue can be found down on this page. There is also a bit more here but nothing that looks like hinting.

Given a mantra is a form of repetitive chant I expect all the drones will be performing the chant incessantly (think of the space core from portal 2)
Eh, whatever they are, they aren’t kits. So why even bother? If they balance them like any other utility we’ve got, all we’ll do with them is trying them a couple times and put them up in the dustbin after that.

Engineer is the Charr tech. I’m betting Forge will be Asuran tech.

Why not both? The pact has shown that the combination of Charr and Asura tech, for example in airships, can be quite effective.
No matter which of (signet, mantra, stance, spirit weapon, etc.) the Drones are like, the goodness I can see in Forge is that it adds some missing elements of the basic class. Hammer adds a melee option; and a set of utility skills that has passive functionality which gives Engineer a way to simplify the skill rotation while remaining a decent DPS.
Glad to know that game designers can wisely evaluate the class design. Same thing happened on Necromancer. Furthermore I can guess that Druid will add some useful WvW/PvE supportive features to Ranger (forget about spirits).

Passive = bad.
Please stop with that kind of argument.
Considering how they try to alter every new Elite spec’s class mechanic, I’ve wondered what they could do for engineer. Maybe the drones turn all our toolbelts into “signets”, just not in name. So the drone is the toolbelts passive effect, and they go away when you use your toolbelt. It would explane all the diffrent drone textures and models that was datamined.
