Duo w/ Warrior
Engi has some decent might stacking, but guardians support well almost without even trying. Bomb kits are nice for levelling.
Remember that a staff guardian can drop huge might stacks on warriors as well.
Another thing to consider is that Guardian and Warrior share the same armor type, so you can’t give her your leftovers.
I enjoy my engineer, but between the two, i’d totally roll guardian if you plan to duo.
engineer have some good party support by providing light healing and condition removal, the thrown elixirs drop some buffs, but hard to say what you’ll get. i think grenades are still their best damage option, but i don’t like them as much until lvl 60, bombs are fun, but easy to miss if things are moving around. i run static discharge build for leveling. you could potentially do a decent condition build with grenades too.
guardian can provide great uptime of protection or retaliation, as well as speccing for might to allies, shouts, vigor, and can gear with knights to help hold aggro on a monster. i don’t feel like you can really compare the two for support. i’d also favor the guardian on damage, using greatsword or hammer. greatsword pull is great to group up monsters to just rip apart, i think mesmer is the only other prof that can pull multiple mobs.
that said, i’d advise you to play the on you think looks the most fun.

I’m an engineer. My bud is a warrior. We duo the Crucible of Eternity group event to open it for our groups. They go well together, assuming you both know how to play (read: no elixirs, no turrets, nothing stupid like flamethrower or pistols, just blow the kitten out of everything you meet).
In my opinion, the profession is much less important then the build is, when it comes to meshing together. As most any profession can fill various roles, depending on the build set up.
In my opinion, there are clear trends that one’s have to be pretty darn noob to ignore.
A thief group healing spec isn’t going to touch an elementalist healer, and both ele’s and guardians share boons quite liberally with high uptime, unlike a necro (who gets 3 seconds protection per well with high high high cooldown, even when traited).
So saying that all professions are equal at everything is to admit that you’re blind to these differences. Unless someone has a video of a aurashare necro handy?

The Engineer can be great at support.
Just don’t think of support so much as buffing and healing but as keeping mobs under control and corralled together so the Warrior can beat them down.
Since you will be playing with a Warrior there is no reason to try and out dps them you will kill things together much quicker and easier if you focus yourself around kiting and crippling mobs while applying conditions and some buffs.
Just having Elixir Gun and Healing Turret is all you really need for support the rest should go to Aoe mob control.
The engineer just got the most important PvE bugfix to date, so that’s something to consider. Guardians are better for high-level fractals support, but engineers can have decent damage while doing decent support. Healing turret also just got fixed, and should now be a great support heal for PvE. Engineers also have a ton of single-target immobilize—if you’re tackling any dungeons or open world champions with just the two of you, engineers are possibly actually better than guardians!
We don’t get to say that too often…
Thanks to everyone who replied. I took both the Guardian and the Engineer out for a quick 5 level test drive. Based on these VERY limited play sessions, I opted to go with the Guard this time around. I’ll probably be dreaming of bombs before too long. Sigh…
