The appropriately named “Toolbox.9375” made a good point in another thread. (Appropriately named because all his numbers are odd, just like him. No, but really. He’s an engineer named Toolbox.) He mentioned the forum selection bias: happy engineers have little reason to come here, so we get mostly grumpy engineers. Grengineers.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that the Engineer has some very frustrating bugs that have been around longer than some people. (I don’t mean adults that just started playing. Children have gestated in the amount of time these bugs have existed.) Also, most Engineers can agree that we could use a tweak here and there, either in the interest of balance or in the name of fun. (Because 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 is not fun, people. I don’t care if it let me solo Jormag, it’s lame and boring and my hand hurts. That’s my posing hand, people. How can I strike a pose with a gnarled and ghastly claw-hand? I can’t, that’s how.)

That being said, my Engineer(s) is/are awesome. He’s my only 80 because he is so much fun. He has a lot of toys and he can do all kinds of weird things and I love him. I could list those things out, but I don’t think I’m going to convince anyone that has already made up their mind. But, perhaps, a mod will see some positive stuff and pass it along to the devs. Not because it might engender goodwill, but simply because they made a fun class and deserve a manly pat on the butt.

In summary, I only know three things:

1) Yak flag is best flag.
2) Engi class is best class.
3) If God didn’t want us to blow things up, he wouldn’t have made them so combustible.

Of course our Engis are awesome! We know that, and yeah, we complain about the state of things, but have you seen how we complain? We use Sarcasm Kit and post away, lol. Look at other professions forums, they’re like a friggin’ funeral, even the ones that are in amazing spots right now. The Engineer community never ceases to provide with me laughs, insight and knowledge about my profession! Happy Engineers definitely come here, which is how we got our all Engi Guild (NERF) going! The class is too kitten fun to not play, even with bugs, lack of trait synergy and funky damage. I couldn’t be happier that I play Engineer and one of the reasons for it is our community. Nerfs or not, we’ll still be here

This entire post just makes me think you are amped up on way too much caffeine or possibly heroin. You didn’t say one good thing about the engineer except that it is fun and it is the best class.

I agree, the best class is the one that’s the most fun (even though they’re professions). :P Too bad the most fun profession sucks so much. :P

Anyway, yup! Engineer may not be the absolute best at anything (or maybe it could be, I’m not really sure, myself!) but it’s certainly not unusable! My circle of friends benefit from my presence just fine. I’d still very much like a review of turrets so I cling obsessively to them as per my original intention when buying the game, BUT Engineer still has stuff going for them. I’m currently using a four-kit build, and there are tons of handy combos that I’m still needing to commit to reflex-memory so that I can realistically utilize them. Might not be the most powerful, or durable, or supportive, but the versatility that the developers aimed for definitely seems to be there in my experience!

Some people like to come to these forums to theory-craft, personally this is my favorite thing to do for most video-game forums. Look around the other class forums, you have the majority of threads being about sharing builds, discussing play-styles or sharing videos.

I’ve had people bring up selection bias in other video game forums (Diablo 3) and how it just happened to be because people who enjoyed the game wouldn’t find the need to come over and complain. While this view has merit, it is also based around assumptions that may not be true. It may be that a vocal minority, trolls, are making the engineer class to be something much worse than it actually is, but it may also be that the number of trolls is increasing because the majority of the playerbase is unhappy with the direction the engineer is taking.

The diablo 3 forums became a cesspit because a large percentage of the player base became dissatisfied with the state of the game. Likewise, there is a large percentage of players who find their engineers to be unsatisfying (due to bugs or nerfs) or underwhelming compared to other classes.

One thing I’ve found interesting, is that looking at the other class forums you don’t get this much of a “Troll” feel from them. What I mean is that over the months it seems like the people who go to the engineer forum have gotten embittered with the lack of communication/bug-fixes/improvement and the forum begins to mirror this mood. First it was complaints about bugs, then became unrest with the nerfs, followed by self criticism/dark humor. This behavior has actually begun to dance around the fine line of blatantly trolling people willing to work around the issues and discreetly (or not) badmouthing Arena Net.

Agreed. I find that most of the people trolling the engineer forum do so in a lighthearted manner. It’s more the general forums that lack a sense of humor about things. Joking about how bad your favorite profession is, is certainly a better way to handle the agony of sucktardedness than flaming ANet for it. Are threads like Famous Quotes for the Engineer really offensive? I don’t think so. They’re hilarious but sometimes sadly true.

Whew, the D3 forums were (are?) horrible.

For a while, the engineer forums got kind of bad—especially the first couple weeks after the (biggest) nade nerf. There were a lot of gloomy “Anet hates us” posts. As of now, I think things have calmed down quite a bit. We still have all the same bugs/weaknesses but there are some engies performing very well in PvP, and that helps a lot. In other words, everyone knows the profession still has issues, but as long as somebody has found a way to make it work, there’s hope.

The tone of the engi forums is actually pretty cheerful, in a kind of light-hearted, sardonic-Asuran-humor sort of way. We make fun of ourselves, quote famous sayings about engineers, and create turret builds that we all know are awful—all with the satisfying knowledge that we are skilled enough to beat a backstabbing thief with a WRENCH!!!

Engineers are fun to play.

Fun? Yes.
Awesome? No.

If you want your Engineer to perform as well as other classes, then you have to work a lot, lot harder (much steeper/longer learning curve and many more button presses required to achieve the same results). But they are fun to play (in part because you have to become a master at avoiding damage) and you have sooo many options for how you build and play your Eng (even identical Eng builds can seem very different in the hands of different players).

So, absolutely, enjoy your Eng – they may not be quite as powerful, but they are fun to play.

However, SIR, I’m afraid I have to disagree. OS on a dolyak is not the funniest animation ever. OS on one of those round looking golems is the funniest animation ever; arms akimbo, tiny little legs kicking frantically as they tilt to the side. You can see their processors churning, “What is this? I don’t even? Why does the Maker let bad things happen to good golems?”

On an unrelated note, if someone is swinging by Rata Sum any time soon, would you mind picking some things up for me? Maullix has been banned from the city for some unknown reason.

Engi isn’t bad. Engi is awesome. I’ve spent a great deal of time in PvE and sPvP. I’ve spent a decent amount of time in WvW. In all those areas they can perform “Well” to “Excellent,” depending upon the build and the player. Stepping back from specifics, the only problems the Engi suffers from is that other classes out-perform them in Fractals and tPvP. It’s a question of relative power versus absolute power, and far too many people are conflating the two on this forum. I’m glad to see folks chiming in that aren’t Grengineers.

Engi is just troll in wvw. If there were damage cap not allowing 15k hits then things would be alot different. Zerg wars 2 doesn’t suite versatile gameplay. Just DPS.

After reading this post I’ve decided my first character to level 80 must be an Engi

I had chosen Engineer for my Asura just because it seemed like a good fit thematically. I didn’t really expect to enjoy the engineer. The night I started playing mine, my girlfriend and I were teaming up in the Asura starting zone… she started hearing me giggle… and giggle more… and more… as the night went on my giggles became pretty maniacal. She knew I was hooked on the class.

I can’t go back. I can’t play other classes now.
