So the engineer’s present weapons (not kits) have a ton of utility , block, stun, reflect, leapshot, remove immobilize, ect.

With the idea of the engineer getting a hammer I feel safe assuming that the new weapon would carry at least an equal level of utility (atleast i hope so) but what would it be?

Personally I hope the skills are inspired by effects we have seen on the aether blades since they seem to have a lot of active defense.

Do you think the Hammer will provide a lot of defensive utilities or simply be an pbAoe machine?

Hm, given that the warri hammer is a CC-machine and guardian hammer is a mix of utility, cc and defense, both dealing heavy damage, I suspect us to get a high power-dps weapon that focuses on defense and utility more than CC.

It looks like we get at least one leap, one blast-finisher and -judging from the animation in the trailer – access to burn.
Further I suspect us to get a moving reflector-bubble as skill 5. Revenant already has a mobile shield and it would make sense, given that fortified turrets was one of a-net newest traits for engis.
Skill 2 most likely will be the blast-finisher, maybe also applying burn, and skill 3 possibly will be the leap-chain we’ve seen in the trailer.
No idea about skill 4… Some aoe-push or pull would make sense I guess. Maybe a block (turning into some kind of aoe-cc if hit in melee). Or some kind of projectile (canon, energy-bolt, whatever fits the theme)

I kinda think we’ll get a whirl move that knocks back in an AoE, low range, 3-5 targets, with a whirl finisher.

I’d really love for us to get some sort of a short range teleport or disposition effect on it, but I doubt it would happen.

From a PvE perspective, it’ll be good as long as it has high power coefficients + vuln and a low cooldown blast. It wouldn’t surprise me to find all 3 on it, or at least 2/3, considering.

I hope we get this, definitely. My hope for the engi+hammer is that it will be a bit similar to the Engineer in Torchlight II, that has a ‘forcefield’ ability (that also gives smaller, lesser forcefields to party members), a “charge” mechanic that has some abilities having better effects the more charges you have, summoning mini-robots that do lots of explosion damage. It was such a satisfying class to play, if it’s anything like that in GW2 I will lose my noodles.

On the same vein, I just really want some hammers that fit with the engineer theme (as well as medium armor with some ‘plating’); gargantuan wrench, please? ^^

^^ This. For PVE we’d go from the vuln stacker to the might stacker, I’d like the option.

Not asking for LH level damage, but something close would be nice.

I’d like a solid Auto Attack, with side skills being more utility based.

I think a solid actual weapon, esp one with a solid auto, would go a LONG way to open up Engi diversity a bit. Less tied to kits would be huge, and that’s what a solid damage primary weapon would do. Less tied to the highly active kitswapping play style with a solid auto attack option. With a blast you have the potential for some very interesting synergy (blast into fire for might of course, blasting into dark with a necro for blind also though a possibility, or even tossing water down and just hammering away).

So yeah, that’s what I’d like to see. Though I’d still likely use mainly kits and just use them for burst skills to add on damage, but it’d open up some options. You could go nade/eg/ft still and use hammer in synergy with a staff Ele to keep might covered, your vuln output would drop but with a DPS war and various on crit traits you could still maintain a very healthy level.

Well I think we can all agree we want hammer to be a decently good power option, but! I would love to see a play style change with the hammer in the engineers case. Instead of lots of cc save for mabye a 5 skill I feel it should be a decent mobility weapon with a leap and targeted ability with a blast at the end or a straight forward dash that helps you close in with the target. Seeing as we will be the only real melee class with medium armor without mechanics that allow us to escape easily or prolong death the mobility would allow us to combo for heals or just get to safety or even just keep our hammers in the enemies face and throw them off.

i dont think anet will copy attacks… ie, lightning hammer auto, staggering blow, or bomb/ft fire and smoke themes. plus, id rather have something new/different anyways.

kinda want a reliable long reflect/absorb or a lightning, eth, or dark field though. looks like a leap is already in the works cuz of the teaser videos.

Umm… we are a benefit to dungeons/fractals, actually pretty sweet in fractals. The only reason we aren’t part of the general meta is that we don’t really specialize, the one thing we have that’s strong is vuln, though with how fast dungeon content goes down the burst vuln from ele/war easily covers that leaving us with no real niche to fill, at least not better than another profession. We can fill in for a lot of stuff, but that versatility doesn’t really help us carve out our own niche.

There’s really no room to create a niche with us, certainly not with just a weapon. However, with the new breakbar stuff I could see Engi becoming pretty nice and actually bringing slick shoes to PVE to quickly drop that bar down (testing it on wyvern it was quite nice).

Hard to say for sure, but I have the feeling it was at least a very large dent. I know first time I went in was with revenant of course, and we couldn’t get the thing to break, did the taunt and got off a knockdown, rarely was getting it to 50% with everyone else in there.

Fast forward to Engi using Slick shoes, we never missed on, and almost immediately the bar would break after I ran in there with slick shoes, except for one more heavily packed attempt I ran in and it was an almost instant drop to about 10-20% left then we finished it off with other stuff. With Wyvern scaling his break bar and we know that, I chalk that last attempt up tto just too many people and not enough trying to CC.

So basically can’t say for sure how it will all work out, but I imagine slick shoes being a very nice skill for that situation.

my wishlist would not be related to the hammer it self, but to his “darkside”.
Considering my poor english, i’ll try to explain my self as better as i can.

Assuming hammer will be a melee weapon(yet we have to be sure of it, we only saw a combo in the trailer), i wonder if we will get any new kit to complete a decent build that allow us to play melee AND ranged.

The “dark side” in my point of view, it’s the possibility that engineer will get a melee hammer as weapon, but not a new kit to balance the different situations we may encouter in PvP, WvW or PvE.

Hammer and nades (assuming that the new trait line willntake the place of the rifle and pistol traitline as logical) , can beba good solution to PvE where is not that hard to hit a monster.
It can be good in PvP if they will continue with this kind of maps where enemy is forced to engage ina circle(you spam nades on your feet), but in that scenarios you are stillnusing a 1500 range weapon as melee, because it is not possible use nades ina reliable way as rsnged weapon.
Try to hit a ranger, rifle warrior, or anything else is ranged using only nades as ranged weapon.

That told, if you equip hammer, you will not have anymore your rifle or pistol as option to hit your enemy that is standing at 900-1200 range from you.
Would you guys be able to hit that enemy using nades in an effective way without a rifle or pistol as companion to support your ranged options?

So, considering i may suffer the loss of my ranged pressure without the support of my rifle or pistols, i really hope devs will come up with a new ranged kit to compliment and complete a possible hammer build.

Hope it wasn’t too much off-topic.

A complete off-topic now: i was thinking that the hammer we saw in the trailer can also be a new legendary… instead ofnthe step effect his animation could be that floating drones around the character, and the fire we see during then leap combo should be a simple weapon effect, and not a burning effect from the engineer skills.

As if you ever gonna be able to use your aa. I’d rather like to have it on #2 on a 5 sec CD like FT has. But 2 similiar skills? Meh…

I would imagine the hammer would not be just a sledgehammer (like those of Guardian and Warrior), instead it would be some sort of Swiss army knife that shapes like a hammer. It could well be a cannon with range abilities or some sort of baseball bat that lobs missles from afar.

My personal whshlist:

- A decent autoattack (Instead of alwasys swapping kits, ecc… )
- At least one short cooldown leap, or whirl (so i can run through WvW maps)
- An Hammer build that does not need kits (If anet do not fix Hobosack)
- At least one or two blast finisher, or a fire field (might, might, might, might…)

All the rest is rubbish for me

My wishlist?

Make Engineer hammer a relatively good scaling, high utility power weapon which is not as reliant on 2kits+ for utility and adaptability.

Suggestions:
- give it some range alteriative. Thinking of some charge up system
Almost like Elementalist scepter earth 2.

- Make the main attack relatively strong, and maybe make one of our skills a steroid, which maybe gives us movement speed and some form of faster autoattack? Would be fun to experiment with traits not locked into speedy kits for swiftness.

- Maybe a reversed overshot? You use magnets or whatever, rocket like function to jump/blast yourself towards your enemy, knocking both yourself and your enemy down for a short duration.

Summary example:

Passiveish effect of hammer: Charge/gather bolts/scraps overtime in combat. No bolt/scrap decay out of combat.

1. (Melee) Regular relatively strong attackchain, third hit charges the hammer with bolts/scraps of whatever.
2. (Melee/Range) Shoot your bolts/scraps at your target, if no bolts/scraps avaiable, you will perform your last attack in your skillchain (from your attack 1) to charge a few bolts/scraps.
3. Inventors Madness ~ Gain swiftness(15s?) and a short duration of quickness(3s?), drop proxy mines over the duration (of swiftness) while in combat.
4. Rocket boots wannabe, although require target. Knocks both yourself and your enemy down briefly upon impact.
5. Launch your foe, if under the effect of Inventors Madness, Allow yourself to pull yourself to your foe using the magnetism(or w/e) of your hammer.

I would love to see the hammer engineer jumping into a fight, isolating a single enemy by ramming them with their hammer/head/whatever (skill 4), going berzerk (3) and launching them away from their teammates, jumping after shortly (skill 5). Leaving a minor trail of proxy mines (weak but they add up) in his wake to discourage chosen foe to run back the way he came from. To finish of the fight he/she unloads all the gathered stacks of bolts/scraps, either from range or melee on chosen foe.

I find that engineer lacks aggressive play, so i would love to see a melee, control heavy madman launching and throwing himself after his foes. Combine that with some fun, rarely used gadgets, and maybe the toolkit since it would add up the aggressive playstyle in combination with a mad inventors hammer.

Give it some burning with a blast finisher and a nice explosion animation, some soft CC like chill on the third auto attack, a block/reflect ability with hard CC counter swing on melee like a stun, and a leap.
