Engineer Build: Tailored for a Noob
Static discharge is as simple as you’ll get and it works well even if it leaves you squishy. Two knockbacks, two cripples and an immobilize help a fair bit though.
On the contrary. A Rifle/Static Discharge build does not use toolkits. It stays pretty much 100% of the time in Rifle and just using the toolbelt skills which are the F1 to F4 skills (or in my case, control + 1 to 4).
While Grenades end up doing better and more it is a huge pain in the patootie to aim the grenades while also dodging red circles, checking CDs and all of it involving always sparing a finger to keep on pressing 1 for the auto attack. The strength of a SD build is that we can focus on our survival while keeping on pressing buttons when they come out.
Pretty decent damage too, but mostly in a burst fashion (all comes out in the first 3 seconds of battle, then we need to wait 7-13 seconds to do it again) even if it is mitigated if we stay in melee where we have a few other options than just auto-attacking.
A typical SD build might be: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fcAQFAUl0pyUX8SyF17IyoHkWntZgekX+1I+pw8B-jgxAUBgkXR0YbDAqFMVJRUt3oIa1A-e
This is the cheapo version, you can do more with runes of the Scholar (expensive though) or Ascended gear (ditto). The last ten points you can do whatever with, I feel it gives more bang for my buck with Empowering Adrenaline boring as the trait may be.

I bound my keys so they’re all within the ‘Q’ → ‘C’ range on the keyboard (3×3 block), plus 1 → 5.
Movement= WSAD
Skills 1→5 = 1→5
Skills 6→10 = Q,E,Z,X,C (Z,X,C activated with thumb)
Toolkit = <shift> + Q,E,A,D
It took me quite a while to adapt to it, but now I play very comfortably and I can execute any kit + toolbelt skills with ease. Just takes practice, really.
If you’re not interested in mastering the art of APM (actions per minute; starcraft invented term), then I think a turret based build with riffle would offer you the easiest play style. Just plant your turrets and focus on your riffle abilities. That way you spend more time engaged in the battle and less time on finding your mouse cursor or what keyboard button you have to press next. A bomb build also works, but you’ll want to combine that with Elixir S to get you out of a bind and do so quickly. If you can do that, then it’s not a bad play style either.
This profession has very strong skills in the utility slots to give up the second weapon slot. Knowing that you’ll need to get used to using F1-F4 abilities. Keybinding 6-0 into something like Shift, Q, E, R, T (that’s my set up) helps a great deal as well.
As for builds that are beginner friendly I’d say are the ones that aren’t running triple kits and even a little as possible since Engineers with lots of kits have the luxury of swapping even more freely than Elementalists (not to mention we can flat out choose our individual “attunements”)
Probably something with Elixirs would be good, since you can just choose to use them as you want the buffs instead of having to make the decisions of opportunity cost (time) involved with multiple kits.You could also run around with a Rifle and Flamethrower for a little bit. 2 knockbacks, immobilize, aoe blind and good burst with Rifle3, 5, Flamethrower2 doubletap. Good control, damage and ease of use!
I do the same thing, but my keybindings are Shift+R/F/C/X.
Despite some of the weird things going on with this class, I still find it enjoyable. I still look askance at some utilities (Gadgets), but the elixir skills give a fantastic access to good boons and cleanses, whereas turrets give decent DPS, knockback, and meatshielding. The various kits are great for utility as well: Bombs for healing/PBAoE, Grenades for ranged AOE, Flamethrower for toughness and burning, and EG for a nice AOE heal (though EG is still a very weak kit overall).
The additional abilities + kits on the F1-F4 bar more than make up for not having a second weapon set. In fact, when I play my engie, I hardly notice it at all because I’m using so many other skills aside from my main weapon, anyway.
I wouldn’t say SD has NO kit use, the toolkit is very good for defense… but I would agree it’s probably the easiest to just pick up and use. The one kit makes it feel like a normal weapon swap (just using a different button).
Or if you want to go more for conditions, something like HgH PP + 20/10/0/30/0 (last 10 are up to personal pref.) Elixirs H,B,S + Toolkit is also pretty simple to just start playing with. Again, just one kit to swap to makes it feel more like what most are used to with other classes.
I would encourage you to eventually try more than one kit, but to just to get used to the class these will work well
