Engineer Farming?
farming what? events in Orr.. Yeah FT is simple for that.
No. Use a Ranger for that.
Edit: I should add that I much much prefer my Ranger or Warrior alt for killing in Orr because they do it faster and with less effort.
It’s [NERF] or nothing!
I see quite a few engineers farming Orr, and rightfully so. Engineer is one of the stronger PvE soloers when played right.
Don’t be too entranced with the flamethrower though – While yes, it’s capable of tagging multiple mobs it can only hit a maximum of three targets with auto, at very short range. If you free aim it intelligently, it’s still quite wonderful for tagging, but for giant clusters of mobs, you definitely want to be using grenade kit for the simple fact that all of it’s abilities can hit many more targets at once. Despite having 1500 range, grenade kit is best used at short-medium range.
Long story short: Grenade kit is amazing for point blank tagging when traited, wheras FT and EG are stronger for more widespread tagging. You also wanna be running pistol main for Static shot’s additional aoe tagging.
For the toast!
I figured FT for tagging monsters for events in orr seeing as theres usually a ton of people there and damage isnt my main concern i guess, just more-so tagging.
Some say you can only hit X amount of targets with it but..I’ve been able to tag countless mobs with it. whats going on there?
Anyone interested in farmin with me anyhow? ^^ I don’t have a ranger/warrior, both classes i don’t enjoy

Sooo, just to clarify something for other readers, the FT hits 3 targets per tick for relatively low damage, but hits a total of up to 30 times in 2 seconds.
Grenades have 3 thrown, and each can hit 5, meaning fifteen per attack.
Pistol’s auto attack hits up to 5, as does rifle, however that burst nature of pistol’s #1 generally hits more targets than the rifle, and the pistol can also be traited to pierce.
But Halcyon is right, grenades are better for farming up close, as you can hit 15 targets every half second+flight time. Longer ranged, things can be more difficult, but that’s why you have a pistol.
I feel like I should mention bananas in this post. Not sure why.
Grenades = 15 targets in one throw = best farming in the game. Just check if u have problems with keyboard smashing or not.
My FT Engineer has become my default farming toon. It may not be the most efficient at tagging, but it does well enough and it’s survivable as hell, meaning I can do a lot more with it than JUST farming. Flame Blast does great damage and I often see it stripping half a mob’s health off in one shot. Being able to do that with multiple foes means I can get through them that much quicker with that much less risk.
And I enjoy playing it. That’s more important than anything else. Being effective at farming is gravy.
I’ve started to farm Cursed Shore now and holy kitten Grenades + FT are great farming tools. Grenades when theyre too far, and FT when you’re up close to tag them all at once. I only just discovered Orr farming so >.> gimme a break…
I hate farming alone with strangers though, anyone want a farming buddy?
Depends on what you’re farming. Engis can switch out tons of options, whereas other classes (from what I’ve seen) specialize in fewer situations.
For Orr mobs, Juggernaught FT is good. Others have suggested grenades, which is possibly better, but I loathe the play style. Besides, last patch’s changes to FT make it great if you actively use every skill.
For node farming, you want speed and cripples. Ignore mobs, even while gathering, and keep 100% swiftness uptime. I like a 30/0/20/0/20 build, using pistol/pistol and Bomb kit for glue, and Tool Kit+Power Wrench for additional cripples. Power Shoes, Gear Shield, and Speedy Kits+MedKit keep you running full time, with Drop Antidote if you get tagged with cripple.
Nothing will catch you with that spec, in PvE or sPvP or WvW; and if you do feel like killing a mob, Bombs+Wrenches form a powerful melee synergy.
I leveled up farming underwater krait in the WvW lakes, and engi is great for that. Good source of scales for leveling up crafting, too. Underwater areas in Orr tend to be choked with extra mobs; with Rifled Barrels and Grenades, you can easily pull tons to you and fight them all off simultaneously.
Owned.
@Jorgam, Yeah, Im not even a FT spec, but i do have my condition removal and perma swiftness and it works very well farming. I just meant farming the events in orr, not just running around killing monsters

Best as in fastest? Or easiest? Farming isn’t usually a competition. Engineers can farm at the same speed as any other profession, though, and faster than some. Grenades are good but the delay will sometimes leave you without any tags, plus it requires aiming/paying attention. Autoattacking with pistol is probably the best way since you don’t have to be looking at your computer screen and the mobs won’t die before the pistol shot reaches them.

Well, Farming is a speed competition lol, but i manage with grandes + FT. i wouldnt do pistol, not enough aoe on short cd for my liking
The delay from nades hurts you when there are too many people in an event.
They can melt the mobs so fast that you have to be part psychic to throw the grenades before the mob appears. Resorting to the rifle auto attack – tabbing – is usually the best.
Given this I would have to say they are not one of the better classes to farm. They are good in small to medium size events. Large events not so much.
The Guardian with the lawn-mower like staff auto attack is the best.

Wave of wrath is only a 600 range, and that is -Not- optimal for farming either.
FT mob swarms, use grenade barrage if you’re too far away and need to tag a group before other players kill them. if you need to focus a particular target, get smaller mobs between you & target, then use rifle- shots pierce and will still hit multiple. COmbine this with MF and some good spots in Orr and you’ll rake it in.

Again… it’s why you shouldn’t be chucking nades out to 1500. They’re medium ranged weapons at best.

I use the same build as well (possibly different traits). For node/resource farming, I’m personally fond of P/S, Toolkit, Elixir Gun and Elixir S (Elixir B first to build up a good cushion of swiftness). 5 seconds of block time, 3 sec invuln, with a possible stealth on 60 sec cd. Sadly, with the Kit Refinement nerf, the insta condition removal on EG is gone now…
I’ve had random people ask me how I have 4-5 minutes of Swiftness stacked up.
For the toast!
One thing that is underlooked for engineers is the coated bullets trait for pistols. Until you use it on massive enemies in Orr, it is difficult to comprehend how good it is at farming. But, some math:
Coated Bullets makes the pistol’s auto attack pierce, which means it can hit up to 5 enemies in a row. Every time it hits an enemy it explodes, hitting 5 nearby enemies as well. This comes to a whopping total of 25 hits per auto attack. Now, this ideal situation rarely happens (cough temple of grenth event cough), and these explosions have a tendency to hit the same enemies instead of bouncing about hitting many…
But 25 hits per auto attack… in layman’s terms this means THEIR NUMBERS COUNT FOR NOTHING!!! I’m serious there, on my engineer with a zerker pistol build can mow down a dozen orrians in a few seconds, far quicker than it can take down an individual one. Every pull of that trigger looks like a number explosion, and combine it with Toss Elixir U for projectile blocking and Drink Elixir U for haste and for five seconds it’s bloody Armageddon. It was with this that I and 3 others managed to do the final event in the Grenth Chain, which still spawns more enemies than the game can process with 4 people, BTW.
The pistol also comes with a bouncing attack to tag multiple enemies, and on offhand it comes with a cripple patch and an AoE cone burn + high damage. You’ll only want to use the #2 skill when it is, like, just 2 enemies in a line at close range. But still, overall it makes for a great farming tool.
The engineer itself has a lot of farming tools. There’s coated bullet pistols as well as the grenade kit, and lesser mention also goes to the flamethrower and the bomb kit. The bomb kit, IMO, is one nearly any engineer can use due to it’s raw power and how easily it is traited into a farming tool. Just 10 points in explosives to increase the explosion range and then you can nuke anything that gets near Plinx with little effort. It combines well with the rifle, which can use jump shot for a high damage AoE. In fact, it is harder to find something the engineer cannot use to farm.
Exactly, I find engineers are one of the better farmers in the game.. I’ve started farming orr with great success but… I still want a farming buddy Any takers?
You know you want to ^.~
